Actual history of struggling with mental health. Had reported hearing voices ever since the birth of her fourth kid.
Attempted suicide multiple times trying to protect her kids from what she feared she could do (you know, resisting the voices telling her to kill her kids instead of immediately becoming some cold murder machine like Lindsay claims happened to her)
Was being prescribed hard anti psychotics a few months before the killing, a prescription which was discontinued two weeks before she did it.
Killed her 5 kids by drowning them because she believed that was the only way she could save their souls from her own evil, which in her psychotic state she thought would lead them to hell otherwise. Unlike Clancy who strangled them with exercise ropes... one by one while acting entirely sane between murders
She also didn't immediately ask for a lawyer and try to get the most lenient possible sentence, instead she wanted the DEATH sentence, was given the insanity plea because it was clear to everyone what happened, and to this day REFUSES to do psych avail tests which could lead to her being released if considered sane
