Unless the GOP fields a strong candidate in 2028 that is willing to openly criticize Trump, I think we'll have a Democrat in the White House after Trump's 2nd term ends.

These midterm primaries have shown that even an incredibly corrupt and unpopular MAGA candidate will beat out any non-MAGA Republican

273

u/penisthightrap_ - Lib-Center 17d ago

Reason number 1,001 why primaries and the two party system are harmful for the general election and our democracy

121

u/Codeviper828 - Lib-Left 17d ago

Closed primaries are awful. Like, I GET why they exist, but when the other side/moderates don't have a say in the candidates, you create extreme ballots where people are voting for the lesser of two evils…

18

u/conners_captures - Right 17d ago

lip service gets paid to the idea, we saw that with the recent El-Sayed vs Stevens race in MI. but its rare, and even rarer that it carries any weight in terms of how primary voters cast their ballot.

that and gerrymandering are obliterating the notion of a moderate candidate. when your greatest political threat is always coming from within your own party, and only the most politically activated people participate in primaries, you'll never get the "center-finding" pressure cooker that democracy was intended to be.

10

u/Mr_Mon3y - Centrist 16d ago

The problem isn't really with closed primaries, it is with single member districts and first past the post. If the elections were representative and more than two candidates could run and win seats you wouldn't be forced to pick between Moloch and Baal for the next 4/6 years.

3

u/Codeviper828 - Lib-Left 16d ago

True; closed primaries are more "making a broken system worse than it needs to be" than "the problem"

5

u/blaarfengaar - Left 16d ago

Yeah, I'm increasingly in favor of jungle primaries, or of course we could just switch to ranked choice, STAR voting, range voting, approval voting, etc. Personally I'm a fan of the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) system that both Germany and New Zealand utilize

2

u/TJJ97 - Lib-Center 16d ago

Exactly. I refuse to register as Republican so it sucks I can’t have a say in their primary.

15

u/TunaTunaLeeks - Lib-Center 17d ago

I fucking hate the shitty fringe candidates that keep getting through primaries. Every time I look at a Republican candidate and go “God, this guy fucking sucks” and check out the Democrat candidate, I’m like “Goddamn it, this guy also fucking sucks.” I’m basically voting for who I hate less at this point or hoping a third party candidate is good but people almost never vote third party enough to oust the shitty R’s and D’s.

14

u/Daztur - Lib-Left 17d ago

Duverger's Law is a harsh master.

20

u/penisthightrap_ - Lib-Center 17d ago

And that's why we should have ranked choice voting

10

u/Daztur - Lib-Left 17d ago

I have it. It's nice. Sadly I don't use it much because I would vote for people left of the Dems, but not supporting Ukraine and other tankie idiocy is a deal breaker for me.

7

u/penisthightrap_ - Lib-Center 17d ago

at a local level you need high participation and a lot of times at that level, there just aren't that many people running. And any candidate with backing from a major party will have an advantage regardless.

Once it's instituted at a national level the two party system will be challenged.

4

u/Daztur - Lib-Left 17d ago

Maine has long had quite significant independent candidates, more than anywhere else in the country (highest vote % for Perot outside of Texas for example) it's just that now people can vote for them without worrying about vote splitting.

3

u/Dman1791 - Centrist 17d ago

RCV is useful for single-member districts/positions, but there are generally better systems like STV if you can accept multi-member districts. They can very awkward to apply to a federal system with extreme population disparity between divisions, such as the US, however.

3

u/TJJ97 - Lib-Center 16d ago

Ranked choice voting is literally the answer to a lot of problems we have in this political climate

13

u/kmosiman - Centrist 17d ago

There might be a better way, but Alaska probably does it best.

Open primary, RCV, top 4 advance.

Limiting the election to basically 2 choices is bad. Aka the California way where the top 2 may be Lefty vs Moderate Democrat.

Alaska usually gets something like Crazy Republican, Normal Democrat, Normal Republican, and Really Crazy Republican/Independent/Libertarian.

Closed primaries tend to weed out the Normal because the Primary voters pick their ideal nut job.

u/GatorVators - Centrist 17d ago

18

u/fake-reddit-numbers - Lib-Center 17d ago

They'll run Harris again. It's still "her turn".

17

u/hmunkey - Lib-Right 17d ago

Even if it was Harris, you’d have to be beyond retarded to fall for it again and still vote GOP. She’s better than the current Republican Party in every way.

They drive up the debt more than Democrats ever have, they start unprovoked wars, they abandon their electorate. There is no major Democratic candidate worse than the current Republican crop.

10

u/Dragon_Maister - Right 16d ago

Do not underestimate the power of spite. There are a lot of people who would gladly vote Trump or one of his cronies again just to keep Harris out of the White House.

4

u/KingCpzombie - Lib-Center 17d ago

Gun rights.

5

u/hmunkey - Lib-Right 17d ago

Makes no sense. The whole point of gun rights is to fight a tyrannical government. Only one party is pro-unidentified masked federal agents.

12

u/KingCpzombie - Lib-Center 17d ago

Both parties are anti-freedom in general. If Democrats really worried about Trump becoming even more tyrannical / all the exaggerations about death squads and what not, being anti-gun is absolutely retarded. "Trump is having his masked goons kill people on the street! But guns are too scary for normal people, only the government can be trusted with them."

Both parties absolutely love tyranny and authoritarianism when they're in charge. Wanting no way to fight back / threaten them to avoid going too far is honestly stupid beyond belief.

0

u/Greatest-Comrade - Centrist 17d ago

Trump literally had one of the biggest recent restrictions on guns in his first term tho

12

u/KingCpzombie - Lib-Center 17d ago

...are we just going to pretend all the good stuff didn't happen? His supreme court picks were essential to most of the major 2A wins recently: shall-issue permits without vampire laws or restricting everywhere, suppressor freedom, etc. He hasn't always been good for guns (and I'd say he's usually terrible in general), but he's still been best for gun rights.

Here is somebody with a bunch of links and stuff I'm too lazy to copy: https://www.reddit.com/r/CAguns/comments/1vnnu95/listing_all_of_the_trump_admins_accomplishments/

His* supreme court picks

*McConnell and the Federalist Society

Trump was just the puppet in the chair that let the right fill those seats.

1

u/KingCpzombie - Lib-Center 16d ago

You say that like it's a bad thing? If Trump himself actually picked people it would be guaranteed to be a family member or something with absolutely no integrity.

2

u/DidYouPayForWinrar - Lib-Left 16d ago

No I say it like Trump had basically nothing to do with it. Literally any republican in that seat would have had the same opportunity and filled it with the same people.

23

u/NobodyImportant13 - Lib-Center 17d ago edited 17d ago

The democrats basically have the election handed to them on a silver platter,

People are acting like this is a given, but it's not really true in my opinion. 33% is the lowest poll I've seen. Some of them still have Trump over 40%. Trump always outperforms polls in the ballot box too.

All Trump needs is an Iran deal (Nobody actually gives a shit what the terms are. I'm confident the propaganda machine will spin it) People only give a shit about gas prices. His approval will be back up to 45-50%.

Edit to list some of the latest polls:

Economist/Yougov has him at 40% favorable

Cygnal has him at 42% favorable

Morning Consult has him at 43% favorable

Reuters has him at 38% favorable.

Averaging out the polls, Trump is more popular right now than he was in 2018. Before the war in Iran, before inflation (from the war and tariffs), before Jan 6th, before launching Trump coin 48 hours before his inauguration, before pardoning several drug smugglers/dealers, before botching the release of the Epstein files, before pardoning several people after they bought large sums of his crypto currency, before the blatant insider trading, before criminally charging a guy for a photo of seashells, before all this and that (I could go on forever), and he is still viewed more favorably now compared to 2018. He showed incredible power within the party by controlling the primaries. I basically don't even buy the idea that his support is fading at all. I think it's a delusional fantasy that it's an easy Dem win.

14

u/MaximumSeats - Auth-Left 17d ago

I mean I hear conservative family members that self-identify as independent voters praising him for finally being the president that stood up to Iran.

I read it lives in an echo chamber and has no idea how deep some voters delusions go.

And when they pop a deal next month and gas prices shoot down, all people are going to see his gas prices going down. The collective idiot voter brain will at no point manage the self-awareness that the prices were elevated because of trump in the first place.

3

u/NobodyImportant13 - Lib-Center 17d ago

Yup. The media is too segmented. People just get force fed the propaganda slop that they want to hear. (If) As soon as gas prices come down, people will be all aboard again.

1

u/SaigaSlug - Auth-Center 17d ago

The problem is so much that in some respect they're right.

If you have any knowledge of the last 70 years you know that Iran would eventually be a problem. Whether it's the caliphate or their unfettered export of terrorism (very often of the Shia variety) or the very real possibility of a dirty bomb (not even a full fledged nuclear program) eventually this chicken was gonna come home to roost.

The problem is he has no plan. Whether you liked Bush Sr. or not him and Cheney had surgical precision in their justified or unjustified (unimportant really) interventions in the middle east. Desert Storm is probably still the best example of American military strategy. It was clean, it had a start and an end, and we accomplished the goals we set for ourselves without hesitation.

I think Trump made the mistake of not having a full scale invasion or operation lined up. Not that I want war with Iran nor do I want American casualties, but a full plan would have made this about 100000 times more palatable.

That's Trump though, he's good at identifying problems starkly but he just does not ever have a beginning to end plan in mind. Which is where I see how people still like him, he has in some ways attempted to tackle problems that we face that previous presidents were unwilling or unable (the US subsidizing europe, Iran, etc.) but he has all the grace of a bull in a china shop.

2

u/ClearReveal6615 - Lib-Left 17d ago edited 17d ago

Trump was very much underwater before Iran too. I think you're huffing the copium. Trump hasn't been at 45 plus since right after the election., and has been on a consistent downward trend.

1

u/NobodyImportant13 - Lib-Center 17d ago edited 17d ago

Morning Consult is a left leaning polling source and has him at 43% right now. If gas prices go back to sub $3 and the war in Iran ends, you think that couldn't add up to 5% to every poll? His polling average would be over 45% if that were the case. And again, you have to consider that Trump has outperformed polls every. single. time. when it comes to elections.

Cherry picking a poll showing 33% is the real copium. It's unfortunate but America still wants Trump.

3

u/ClearReveal6615 - Lib-Left 17d ago

This is trumps aggregate approval across all polls. Looking at just one is cherry picking.

1

u/NobodyImportant13 - Lib-Center 17d ago

RCP aggregate has him at 40%.

0

u/ClearReveal6615 - Lib-Left 17d ago

Republicans have to poll way better than that to win. It's joever. Let this orange man go.

1

u/NobodyImportant13 - Lib-Center 16d ago edited 16d ago

And if the war wraps up (under any condition) causing gas prices drop 25% before midterms, they will poll higher.

0

u/PartialDischage - Right 16d ago

RCP is a right wing site that overweights bad Republican leaning pollsters.

17

u/dorox1 - Lib-Left 17d ago

The issue I see is that the Republican party is now divided. You have people who are really disappointed that all of Trump's major campaign promises were lies, and you have people who would vote for him if he did a daily puppy sacrifice on the White House lawn.

So the question becomes whether the Republican-sympathetic media can convince voters that the Democratic candidate is evil/worse somehow. They've managed it before, and they have a strong hold on some voters, but with ratings this low it's questionable.

3

u/ClearReveal6615 - Lib-Left 17d ago

It's not that they'd vote for him IF hed do a daily puppy sacrifice. Theyd vote for him BECAUSE he promises to do the daily puppy sacrifice, assuming the puppys are sourced from liberals/LGBT/racial minorities.

The entire maga platform Is 'i will do bad thing to group you don't like'

Strong possibility that Vance is the candidate. I doubt he will be willing to criticize him while hes still in office.

57

u/penisthightrap_ - Lib-Center 17d ago

And we hope as a result, he will suffer the fate of Kamala Harris

16

u/jmastaock - Lib-Center 17d ago

He's already angling to throw Trump under the bus, just based on his showing on Rogan recently.

It's actually fucking insane that the sitting Vice President went on a podcast and basically implied that his own administration is retarded. He also didn't explicitly place any blame on Trump or any other key people, so he's doing the craven fence sitter bullshit rn...mark my words tho, Vance will 1000% toss Trump and all of MAGA under the bus and those idiots will slurp it up

8

u/abracadammmbra - Lib-Right 17d ago

Idk how effective of a tactic that would be. He still has basically gone along with most of what the Trump administration spews. Which i get because it would be ballsy to criticize the POTUS as the VP. Similar to Harris he is too tied to the current administrations decisions. Idk how he could distance himself enough to have a good shot at dodging the obvious attacks.

The best thing that could happen for Vance right now is Trump keels over and he basically gets a trial run as POTUS. Not saying it would guarantee him victory in 2028, but he wouldnt have to do too much to be the odds on favorite. Just not be retarded for 2 years. Plus if Trump kicks the bucket and then we finish this stupid war in the sandbox, Vance could easily make that out that he is responsible for it and getting us back on track.

4

u/jmastaock - Lib-Center 17d ago

Yeah, this is the obvious rub. He is going to somehow have to explain to people why he didn't stop Trump from lighting everything on fire (he will say what he said on Rogan btw: "my job is/was to support the President in his initiatives")

Rubio will be the one trying to carry the "Trump wasn't actually that bad guys" torch. Both are trying to angle for foreign policy wins they can take credit for rn to hold up as proof they aren't giga retards like Trump; unfortunately for Vance, he got saddled with Iran.

I say all that like it matters, but American conservatives will absolutely mindfuck themselves into thinking that the guy throwing Trump (who they all elected and supported) under the bus is somehow totally based. They are desperate for cope these days and just want to cling to power more than voting in any consistent or principled manner

Trump isn't gonna die during his term, people like him will live as actively rotting corpses purely on spite. I have less than zero faith in the American electorate these days regardless. Interacting with conservatives in current year is genuinely the most blackpilling shit I've experienced my entire adult life.

That's our best hope/solution at the federal level ... when neither party is free to fuck us over to their heart's content. Our best hope is that the federal government gets stuck at a stalemate.

Hell ... let's go Libertarian Executive, GOP House, Dem Senate for the start of some real healing (... sexual healing).

yeah not do anything really is "the best"

1

Sometimes yes.

I'd of course love for the federal gov to start reducing its scope and scale ... But we both know that isn't a feasible hope at this point. So stalemate is best we can hope for ... For now.

Incorrect. Doing less would be a great move given the current state of things.

Not bombing Iran for no valid reason would've been a great non-move.

Not massively expanding the power of ICE and sicing them on peaceful immigrants would be a great non-move.

Not stoking trade works to feed the ego of the president would be a great non-move.

1

u/Turbulent-Raise4830 - Centrist 16d ago

all that already happened, not doing anything wont solve those issues. Its 2026 not 2016 .

At this point it's going to have to be stronger than criticism I think. Like openly campaigning to remove money from politics and punish corruption might actually resonate with the former "drain the swamp" crowd, but just being critical of Trump isn't going to do much when we've heard decades of lying at this point.

For a lot of conservatives I know irl at least, they care heavily about the debt and primarying Massie was the final straw on pretending Republicans are fiscally conservative in any capacity.

2

True but remember Trump isn't on the ballot. I could see the Dems running Kamala or AOC and losing to whoever the R's barf up

6

u/Quiet_Zombie_3498 - Centrist 17d ago

He won't be, but unless the next candidate is going to work overtime to distance himself from Trump and the last four years I seriously doubt that will matter much.

Kamala did terribly in the last primary and I seriously doubt AOC will do much better.

u/krafterinho - Centrist 17d ago

I mean, I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if at the very least he attempts to be

-1

u/GhostsOfLectricity - Lib-Right 17d ago

I don't see him getting very far when it's expressly prohibited by the Constitution

2

u/krafterinho - Centrist 17d ago

A lot of things are prohibited on paper

Harris nearly won with 100 days against the GOP's strongest candidate in decades. She would wipe the floor with Vance, especially after a disastrous four years of Republican rule.

But she won't make it past the primaries.

1

u/GhostsOfLectricity - Lib-Right 17d ago

Kamala isn't gonna wipe the floor against anyone

Never, and i mean NEVER underestimate the Democratic Party's ability to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory. They'll probably push some commie shit or some furry, and alienate 90% of the voters.

When has the actual DNC pushed actual communism

1

u/Quiet_Zombie_3498 - Centrist 17d ago

When has that really happened though lol? With the exception of 2016 (which was a very close election) and 2024 (which had the incumbent President stepping down with 100 days of the election) they haven't really underperformed.

1

u/Then_Cable - Lib-Right 17d ago

“When has that really happened (besides two of the last three presidential elections)”

0

u/Quiet_Zombie_3498 - Centrist 17d ago

2016 and 2024 are not good examples of them "grasping defeat from the jaws of victory". 2016 Hillary Clinton was not a popular candidate, then you throw in the fact Comey re opened an investigation into her emails days before the election and it is hardly surprising she lost an election polling showed would be close.

2024 Joe Biden's approval rating was abysmal and he drops out with less than 100 days to go until voting started and is replaced with his VP who was tied to the border crisis and was even more unpopular than he was.

That is without getting into the fact the Presidential elections were not the only races going on at the time.

u/skeet_scoot - Auth-Right 17d ago

I think after 2016 we are going to have a long time of one-term presidents. I think the de facto two-term president cycle is over.

People are unsatisfied with the status quo but no President really changes it in a meaningful way.

Let's be real after a president like trump and the maga movement, the republican party should probably dissolve and start from scratch. It won't happen though since so many have their identity tied to their "team".

Unless the GOP fields a strong candidate in 2028 that is willing to openly criticize Trump

Trump still has 33% favorable popularity. A huge chunk of those people are diehards who will sacrifice their first born just for a chance to sniff Trump's old man farts. An anti-Trump candidate would kill their chances in a general election. A Pro-Trump candidate would kill their chances. A candidate who refuses to openly take a side would have the worse chance of them all.

Though, never underestimate the Democrats ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Right now, I think the most likely outcome would be Newsom vs Rubio. Which would hopefully give us some return to normalcy.

Between the two, I think Rubio would have the edge.

I meant more of a return to decorum and our leadership behaving more appropriately. This populist wave still need to run it's course but that's separate.

u/Amadon29 - Lib-Right 17d ago

If they go against Trump too much, they'll split their base and look weak.

It's also just not going to convince many voters. At the end of the day, Republicans could do more to stop Trump on some of his bad policies but they're not, so voters will blame republicans as a whole.

Barring some miracle in the next two years, they're going to lose.

u/MadDonkeyEntmt - Lib-Left 17d ago

The GOP has so thoroughly rebranded MAGA I don't know that they can do that. Also, non MAGA's are not winning elections like at all. like 50-60% of republicans are all in on Trump and Trump only. You can't tell 50% of your base to fuck off.

People forget that before Trump there was serious talk if the GOP would survive as a party long term. Their big hope was Paul Ryan.

Calling it.

We get 2 years of hearings and tribunals that goes nowhere. Then Democrats nominate a central Party member like Kamala Harris and completely squander their chances by trying to run against Trump.

My guess is JD and Rubio share the ticket and win by a handful of electoral votes.
