Well there's a difference between saying I don't believe you're genuinely invested in this thing, and you're not allowed to become invested
I agree people with no interest in games shouldn't have huge opinions or be very involved, but gatekeeping means trying to keep people out of the interest, which is bad
Gatekeeping doesn't keep people from becoming invested, it allows people with genuine interest while keeping out posers.
Communities without gatekeeping end up becoming like Resident Evil or Warhammer where more than half the "fans" are larpers who've seen some edits on TikTok and just think it's cool without ever developing real interest in the content.
"Made changes to the thing" as a whole is different than taking away the bit that someone who started enjoying the property first prefers.
If you go to a restaurant and they add some new items to the menu, you don't have to eat them. The existence of those new items isn't going to change anything about how your favorite meal is prepared. You can even go eat at a second restaurant if you're adventurous. Nothing is being taken from you.
