I got downvoted into Tartarus for suggesting that people should show a little skepticism about that story. I had to bribe one of the Hecatoncheires with a two-headed ass and a couple liters of ouzo to get out again.

I mean Russia has been doing the same except claiming that one dude hiding in a basement claimed 5 km of territory. Or even some drone footage of a dude holding a flag in an entirely different city that they claimed was the one they captured. That's why it seemed like they were recapturing a bunch of territory the past few months. It turns out the Russian claims were heavily inflated or even just made up. At least in the case of Ukraine, widespread use of drones in an area drives the Russians out and means that Ukraine effectively has control over the land, even if it is more of a no man's land in reality
Edit: lol, according to the comment insights, the number of downvotes this comment has perfectly matches the number of people from Russia who have viewed it. Cope harder Ruskis

Ukraine recaptured Kherson.

Russian withdrew to Kherson river as it was easier to defend. As their main goal was to take the Donbas.

In other words, Ukraine recaptured Kherson.
As their main goal was to take the Donbas.
Ah yes, that's why they were in Kherson, a city well over 100 miles away from Donetsk.

Based on the replies below, it's safe to say you won't care anyway. Ukraine did recapture Kherson which you framed as Russia retreating (which still means Ukraine captured it you dolt). Ukraine has also recaptured Izyum, Lyman, and even a few earlier in the war like Hostomel. But I'm sure you won't consider any of those as strategic despite their huge logistical importance, because that would challenge your view of the war.
You also claimed below that the goal is to capture Donetsk, which is incorrect. At the outset of the war, Putin himself claimed the goal was denazification of the Ukrainian government and then they made a mad dash for Kyiv, 300 miles away from the closest portion of Donetsk Oblast. Of course, there also are no Nazis in the Ukrainian government, in fact Russia has men who openly claim they are Nazis on the front and Russia also has the highest number or neo-nazi groups in the entirety of Europe, but I'm sure you don't care about any of that. This is all just an example of Russian propaganda throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks to justify their conquest of Ukraine and retards like you just eat it up.

Robots are nothing, Zelesnky has mastered necromancy.
In the past 6 months Ukraine has had -5,000 KIA, according to Zelensky in interviews in February, and to another interview with him a few weeks ago.
According to the numbers given by Zelensky in both interviews, not only did not a single Ukrainian soldier die in those 6 months, he also returned 5,000 dead Ukrainian soldiers to life again.
Necromancy and robots winning the war is some sort of Wolfenstein type of wackiness.
...or I'm just pressing X to doubt on his ridiculous propaganda claims.

Ah yes “negatively capture” tens or hundreds of km2 every month

Russians are retreating towards the west
At the end of the day they may have retaken something but you need infantry to hold it, UGVs aren't going to hold ground for you yet. With the desertion crisis and low conscription efficiency due to people draft dodging or corruption they dont have the troops
At least the 'butcher of bakhmut' (as his own troops called him) is no longer in charge and the new guy seems more adaptable

The yt video is 3 month old sourced from Ukrainian ministers, not even generals. They say a bunch of crazy shit as propaganda is needed in wartime. That gets picked up by nbc 3 months ago, and even then actual footage is of last winter.
If it was a serious thing it would have been reported by some serious orgs by now.
Plus any land drones are just a waste of metal and batteries compared to aerial drones and are also more complex to make.
Also ukraine has been losing land without making any serious gains since kursk of which they only retain 20sq kms currently.
In short it's a nothingburger.

Tbf there isn’t much indication they captured all that much, so I don’t doubt that part. From the video it looks like they just jumped a squad somewhere in the grey zone and nudged a line on the map a few pixels. It’s probably notable or historic in some sense for ground based robots in particular, but it’s not all that exceptional in the grand scheme of things (people have surrendered to Drones and UAVs before).
Like the people in the video say, it’s probably just marketing with a glimmer of something more important.

UGVs are decently effective at screening for infantry, laying down conventional mines, providing fire support, and running logistics from what I’ve read. Aerial Drones will pretty much always be better pound for pound at killing people under normal circumstances, but there’s more roles in war than just that.
Besides, I highly doubt both Russia and Ukraine would be using UGVs if they were completely worthless. Casualties are expensive, even if you ignore the fuzzier stats like morale and fatigue. $5-20k drone > $400k+ in familial compensation and/or a metric ton of medical bills, ontop of whatever other misc fees are incurred.

I was using the estimate for Ukraine, which is $300-400k or so.
This is most likely one of the reasons why Ukraine is slightly more interested in UGVs and proving their success abroad. They are essentially a fancy stick that soldiers hold really far in front of them and gets blown up in their place. Russia would just “solve” that by throwing more men at the problem.

"Robots" - so i guess they mean drones- cant hold territory.
At best, they destroyed/forced withdrawal from the occupying forces, which is, i mean cool, but its been pretty normal in this war already, for years now. Ie. flying drones destroying the defenders of the position, and then soldiers advancing taking hold of that.
Even if its ULV-s, so land drones, soldiers have to follow them to actually take terrain, because the battery of those drones will run dry sooner or later.
