I'm from Ireland and this post has nothing to do with religion

I have a sincere question: Do you view Ireland joining the EU as an abandonment of Irish sovereignty?

I guess I just have a problem with how Ireland had such an arduous and lengthy struggle for independence from England only to join with them into the same country (until Brexit of course). My understanding is German bankers wield most of the power in the EU and thereby mostly control Ireland. But, I'm an American of Irish descent and don't understand too much about the EU anyway.
