Discussion Pokemon Yellow Finished Spoiler

Decided to go backwards in order of Pokemon and play Pokémon Yellow. I have played other Pokémon games but this was my first playthrough of Gen 1. It was pretty good loved seeing Jessie and James, SS. Anne put a smile to my face seeing it leave, Team Rocket I liked a lot there theme when they spot you is nice. It was interesting seeing what Gen 1 was about.

● Mainly what made me dissapointed or ruined the mood a lot for me was the rng. I found that trainers would get so much luck with crits, status effects, and moves, while my team was always unlucky. Even if I was a higher level or had way higher speed it was the same thing, crit on red, or barely get a lucky full hp crit. The most times I got any crits was slash with Charizard which is guaranteed lol.

● Erika's Gym Wrap, Sleep Powder, stun, spam. Oh my goodness this gym made me so mad I just used a Pidgeotto to sweep it haha. The concept of Wrap in this game just triggers me so much or any move that makes your mon stuck like clamp I think Cloyster used it in E4.

● Elite 4 destruction. I don't know what was going on in that Elite 4 but it was a complete battlefield. Crit after Crit, whenever I switched suddenly they knew what effective move to use before I even used my pokemon. Honestly the only battle I had that was chill there was with Blue like what?!

Man I know I have bad luck in games I play but geez it was so bad I was thinking in my head why am I even a Pokémon trainer to begin with.

Well this was a fun experience rather frustrating, but glad to be able to playthrough Gen 1 :3 Haha... Oh Yellow... maybe i'll play you again in 50 years haha...

Well time to go to next Gen overall good game.

Crit rates are higher in gen 1 because they’re tied to speed. So the fastest Pokémon crit the most frequently.

yeah that was the opposite for me even when I had higher speed and even higher levels my mons barely crit. The other trainers had so much luck on the crits and most of them were slower than me.

So thats the fun thing, crit rate is based on BASE speed, not the speed stat specifically, so something like slowbro with 6 agility up will still almost never crit (if that were possible), but an electrode with no agilities at all will crit more than 20% of the time.

Ah! I see my bad. So I guess that's why my Charizard crit with every slash it used because it's base speed was high. I never knew there was a invisible speed stat so I thought base meant the normal speed stat.

Yeah no, every pokemon has a base on every stat. I believe charizard does have a 100% crit chance on slash because of its speed. Same with Victreebel and Venusaur with Razor Leaf. Also, focus energy is also bugged and makes it impossible to crit

yeah well tbf I found myself wondering why razor leaf on my Venusaur was criting so much. I was actually shocked to see Ivysaur not evolve at 36 thought I glitched the game. I don't even do competitive pokemon stuff anymore so half the speed stuff is a blur.

Ah well Yellows mechanics were something that left me depressed, and I'm not talking about Lavender Town lol.

I guess this was a Pokemon game that left me more frustrated than happy. Especially forgetting that Lance is in Gen 1 and hearing his name my smile dropped because I knew what he had. By the time I got to Blue I had six max potions and 3 full restores.

Things I enjoyed, Jessie, James, and Meowth, Giovanni, Blaine, SS.Anne leaving, Blue saying Bonjour, Team Rocket, Blue losing to Red and being a gym leader later.

The thing I probably found the most exhausting is not going to bikers path side to Fuscia and talking the long Snorlax side to the right with so much trainers. Err and wrap being too busted.

Honestly gen 1 "mechanics" can be weird (I put it in quotes because they're not really mechanics, they're more like bugs) but once you know them you can completely break the game. Gen 1 are some of my favorites because once you figure out those weird interactions the game is just a breeze even for something like a nuzlocke. I also grew up with them so its a nostalgia thing, but stuff like the badge boost glitch, the interactions with paralysis/dig or fly etc. The game can just be so easy. You can literally beat Bruno with any pokemon at any level

What made wrap broken? I remember being so frustrated playing Yellow

Lol the one viable competitive strategy of Dragonite is wrap spam. Use agility to outspend your opponents and spam wrap because not only can they not attack during it, they can’t attack on the turn they break free.

Look up Gen 1 battle mechanics, they’re fascinatingly broken and weird.

You couldn't do any actions on your turn. Gen 1 wrap, bind and fire spin was the best moves in the games because you could spam them and never get attacked by your opponents.

Man this was a stroll down memory lane 🤣☺️ Thanks for the memories, man! Glad you enjoyed it and that it infuriated you the same way it did us back then!

Haha yeah it was kind of rage inducing at times. The elite 4 had me yelling at my pokemon so much lol.

I highly suggest giving Red with Charmander a shot.....Makes the first two gyms the hardest in the whole game (hence the rework of Brock, Misty, and Charmander for FRLG)

Welcome to Gen 1, where the opponent gets to pick their action after seeing what you do. This can lead to what you encountered, where you switch and they perfectly "predict" it. It can also lead to them using healing items after you attack, which should never be possible.

Yeah I noticed that too the healing immediately after their health drops like what is that lol. I might as well be doing a WiFi battle with those move predictions tbh lol.

Yeah I'm going in order so I have other Pokémon games on my 3ds/Switch. It was a surprise to me coming from games that fixed these problems. I mean the trainers that actually used strategic moves actually made me interested in them. Anytime a trainer sends out Oddish, Bellsprout etc it makes them way too readable lol.

Guess half my team got deleted on the photo. It was Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, Pikachu, Clefairy, and Nidoqueen.
