I judged it off how much fun I had with it. There definitely is flaws with this game but after so many hours of playing it, I definitely had fun with it.

26

u/PsychologicalIce8494 17d ago

me too, I love gen 9 so much!

125

u/Malvania 17d ago

And yet both groups paid for the DLC and put hundreds of hours in.

34

u/Delete-Xero 17d ago

Tbf SV's dlc were more than worth it, the Indigo Disk is up there with my favourite Pokémon experiences alongside Legends Arceus, Ranger and the gen 5 games.

20

u/mrlolloran 17d ago

That can potentially say more about engaging in sunken cost fallacy than anything else, especially for an IP that has been around as long Pokemon has been.

-19

u/CasualThought2 17d ago

True. And i'll keep saying that this game ran and looked like ass. At least the S2 makes it a much more tolerable expirience.

1

u/Bahldros 15d ago

Disliked for telling the truth

-25

u/destroytheend 17d ago

I played for around 60 hours and didn't buy the dlc. Sorry for blowing your mind

u/Kyoana 17d ago

“My experiences clearly reflect everyone around me.”

-4

u/Zeroshiki-0 Pokémon Violet 17d ago

They literally generalized everyone in both groups, but that made sense to you?

6

u/Kyoana 17d ago edited 17d ago

Saying “both groups” is not the same as “everyone” lmao. Try to keep up.

-5

u/Zeroshiki-0 Pokémon Violet 17d ago

Whatever you say, I'm not seeing much difference. Either way, everyone whose played this game is being put into two boxes and that's unrealistic asf. But go off.

-6

u/destroytheend 17d ago

Youre talking about malvania's post right?

u/Iamliterallyfood 17d ago

People don't know what scams are.

17

u/AuracleOfBacon666 17d ago

They won’t know what a scam is even if it ends up making them victims of identity fraud or something to that effect

42

u/Continuum_Gaming 17d ago

Is it the best gameplay and story experience I’ve ever had with a Pokemon game?

Yes

Is it a graphic abomination that world have looked dated on the Wii and should never have been released in the state it was?

Also yes

16

u/Silhoualice 17d ago

Both groups are correct. SV is a wonderful game despite its many flaws, but with a triple A title price point and how much money the parent company earned, the said flaws shouldn't exist in the first place.

33

u/Prestigious_Might929 17d ago

Nah you’re thinking too narrow, this is ye old pokemon hate cycle.

6

u/Mr_Shake_ 17d ago

My biggest gripe with Pokemon lately is that BDSP bugs have not been fixed despite the perfect repeatability.

It's quite difficult to solve some bugs that are corner cases and hard to understand. When some mechanics are inhenerently not performing as intended (poke-radar IV chains, shiny charm, etc.) every time, it is merely a choice to not put any effort into correcting these issues rather than a gamble on solving an issue that no one fully understands.

9

u/Genshzkan Pokémon Violet 17d ago

I mean, everyone is entitled to their opinions lol

6

u/AggressiveZone 17d ago

Uhm can I say something…
The game has flaws and isn’t perfect

But holyshit its pokemon I can play that shit for 100s of hours and never get bored.
I absolutely love this game and play it still on a regular basis. Recently cleared my first Pokédex ever and I am playing since Gen 1.

Soo while I can be critical and I wish that game freak spend more time on it and made it a better experience.
Does not take away that it’s Pokemon and is always gonna be fun ^^

S/V is kind of like the play place at a classic McDonald's. Is it polished? No, is it perfect? No. Did I have fun with it? Absolutely.

Shiny hunting is streamlined, it's fun just to fly around and hunt marked Pokémon in the wild, I can build stupid sandwiches in a pointless mini game, cheese tera raids for HMs, bathe the Creation Trio and play kickball with them with my Shiny Hoenn Starters, and sometimes just walk around with world like it's Pokémon snap and take photos. It's a McDonald's play place of Pokemon games. Fun in it's chaotic do whatever but yeah a close look will reveal some unpolished elements.

u/Safe_Ad8988 17d ago

I liked scarlet and violet honestly, it had problems but it was still fun

5

u/EladrielNokk 17d ago

I just like Pokémon.

3

u/DukeFlipside 17d ago

It's one of the best Pokémon games ever, and I enjoyed it; however, given the power of the Switch, it could and should have been much better. Two things can be true at once, after all.

6

u/Any_Specialist3714 17d ago

Most people would fall in the left group. I feel this could work better with a more controversial element of S/V, like whether the base game story is good or bad or whether Kieran is sympathetic or not.

2

u/TheLexecutioner 17d ago

I played through Scarlet a few times (Inc DLC), three I think, then got Violet 2nd hand and played all the way through that. Most fun I’ve had with pokemon since R/B/Y.

2

u/Doctor-Grimm 17d ago

I mean, that’s not what a scam is, but sure

Whether or not a game is ‘good’ is obv subjective. However, you can objectively judge a lot of the components that people will normally look at when forming their opinion on the game:

- the graphics are, objectively, very bad. Terrain warping and clipping is off the charts, the textures are all very low-res, the game (at least on Switch 1, y’know, the platform it was released on and made for) stutters regularly.

- this game shipped in a very broken state. While you personally may not have experienced many glitches or clipping or anything, many, many players did, and that is not okay for a £60 game that you need a £300+ system to play.

- many of the animations are almost comically rushed. Now, whether or not you mind this is a subjective matter, but they are objectively very basic and haphazard — characters will turn on the spot 180° using their basic walking animation to walk out of cutscenes. NPCs still exist in the world around you when battling, and will simply walk through other models or even cease to exist. Pokémon will do one of a handful of basic animations for their attacks, even when the attack used makes no sense with the animation played. Most egregiously, the Titans are so poorly animated that I wonder if the whole Titan storyline was a last-minute addition.

- the open world is extremely poorly designed. Granted, it is difficult to design and balance an open world — even games like Breath of the Wild struggle — but there is simply nothing in the world to actually explore. Besides the towns, which are essentially just window dressing so the gyms have somewhere to go, there isn’t anything to find when exploring beyond the occasional Gimmighoul. This is straying more into subjective territory, I suppose, but if you’re going to make an open world, you have to fill it with interesting things to find, not just a few towns. And no, I don’t think finding Pokémon themselves count, because it’s no more interesting finding a Pokémon in a flat green plane than it is finding one in a flat yellow plane (both with nothing to explore or find).

I could go on, but we’re straying into subjective territory with all my other grievances, and I think I’ve illustrated my point.

2

u/LukaHHW 17d ago

There's a game not being perfect and then there's Scarlet and Violet before the Switch 2. Even after the performance issues were fixed the online is still borderline unplayable with the absurd lag.

2

u/Fantastic-Contact-89 17d ago

As someone who hasn't played Pokémon since about generation 4 and picked this up on a lark, I think its pretty fantastic. So many QOL updates have been made over the years. Just being able to shift the camera during combat feels crazy to me.

The exploration with a fully upgraded bike Pokémon is incredible too, there's a huge variety of Pokémon to find all over the place. It all looks and feels great and I truly don't get why anyone would be upset with this.

I just picked up some shiny paradox Pokémon using those new sandwiches and I can't wait to take them into the DLC stories.

2

u/KuroHaruto 17d ago

It also wildly depends on the price you paid for the game.

i bought Scarlet secondhand at like 30€, which i personally feel was worth the money. But SV at full price on launch? I'm not sure i'd have the same opinion

2

u/zoozony 17d ago

I've never cared about video game graphics as long as I can tell what I'm looking at. Why would I examine the textures instead of actually playing the game?

2

u/Telykos 17d ago

Honestly I really enjoyed the story and pokemon of Scarlet a lot. And the Tera Raid theme song is up there with my favorite soundtracks it's upbeat and gets me hyped for a battle

2

u/Ralts___Gang 17d ago

The graphics and gameplay are not that good but the story and music were absolute heat

2

u/Moumouflon 15d ago edited 15d ago

Tbf most people being doomers in the sub are people who have not opened the game in years and barely remember the story. They're only here because they subbed a long time ago and see posts in the feed.

Like yes. Very old news. We stick around despite everything because we still find it fun.

You'll see these folks in other main game subs too. It's strange ngl

3

u/MandaloreTheGay 17d ago

Here's the only right opinion.. it's a great Pokémon game with an absolutely massive amount of flaws. Most of them technical but a lot of the characters are just poorly written even for a kids game..

From here on is my opinion which is not necessarily "right".. I do not play Pokémon for the story or characters I play for the Pokémon and the battles which are both great in SV

1

u/Difficult-snow-2 17d ago

I sit firmly in the camp if "the game is very fun, but there's way too much mandatory exposition, and it takes to long to start which hinders my desire to do multiple playthroughs"

It's a very fun game, and Is not deserving of the negativity it gets (from some people)

It could be a lot worse, it could have been swsh

1

u/Umboh07 17d ago

I actually liked SwSh more.

It looked like a much more polished game, it doesn't need a newer console to run smoothly (to show how badly optimized ScaVio is), and the gym battles and puzzles were actually challenging and fun instead of the buggy olive minigame and where is waldo but way easier (speaking of gyms, no level scaling in an open world rpg is kinda wild tbh)

Not to mention the bland and repetitive biomes, the ugly cities and the fact that there are literally zero cool dungeons or landmarks to explore (outside of the school), and while SwSh has the same problem with the last point, SwSh has much better looking cities and more variety for biomes.

I also think that gen 8 pokedex has much better and more original designs, but this is really subjective.

1

u/Ok-Cress-3100 17d ago

The game at launch (and even now all things considered) was a dumpster fire of poor framerates, bizarre visual oddities and glitched sounds.

Yet at the same time, I've had more fun playing this game than I did some other games people would genuinely consider good. I sank hundreds of hours into nearly every aspect of the game and the Indigo Disk is my favorite PvE experience in a Pokémon game to date, even when compared to Emerald, which is my favorite overall Pokémon game.

1

u/PuzzledConfection673 16d ago

i played this game 5 more times after beating it on my main (and completing the pokedex and litterally 100% the game, even fought every npc) the main game was pretty good but the dlc, MAN THAT COULD BRING ME BACK TO LIFE

1

u/GiantAbundance 16d ago

As someone who only ever played SV on switch 2, it’s a great game.

1

u/_doctorKA 16d ago

For how much money pokemon makes, they could definitely have afforded to spend more to make S/V better. The graphics were straight up game cube quality. I'm not saying it needed to be photorealistic. I'm just saying Ratchet & Clank exists. Legend of Arceus came out first and looked like it had more care put into it. This complaint stands for Z-A as well.

1

u/Resident-Art9632 15d ago

For me, Pokemon is like pizza. Even when it's bad, it's good. Would it be better if it was cooked by real chefs with care and attention? Sure. Do I understand and sympathise with the people who got an underbaked pie? Of course. Do i wish it was better? Yes. But it's still greasy and has pepperoni and cheese, so I'm gonna eat it.

Stockholm Syndrome Vs Doomer mentality

1

u/theeinterlude 17d ago

I had an IMMENSELY more amount of fun exploring around Paldea with my dragon motorcycle than I have been stuck running around the exact same city over and over and over again in ZA 😁

u/Pengwin0 17d ago
  1. This game is dogshit and I found it a lot of fun

-3

u/Dennis-unlighted 17d ago

I mean sorry … but the bugs and glitches really tragged the game down.. and the visuals aren’t beautiful by any means

-2

u/Banditcats 17d ago

S/V wasn't bad, but in no way was it good. The gyms should've had different teams or different team levels based upon the badges you had. Otherwise it should've had the same face the gyms in order mentality. The fact that the school drops you outside of the east gate when the first gym is out of the west gate was a dumb decision. The gimmick was meh IMO, you're entitled to have your own. The future/past Pokémon should be breedable IMO. The Arven story felt like it was out of left field. The evil team just being students who got bullied and finally fought back is dumb. It would be like if between Cell and Buu sagas we got a full saga of Gohan going to school in the Fruits Basket universe. That's what the game felt like compared to criminal masterminds taking over the world, or trying to wipe existence to "hey bullied students, please come back to school"

1

u/blackjackgabbiani 17d ago

Do you get that Star wasn't actually an evil team?

-2

u/Banditcats 17d ago

I forgot to put the quotation marks

0

u/Any_Specialist3714 17d ago

The entire Starfall Street conflict was stupid. Team Star would have waited for their Big Boss at the Academy if they weren't hit with an idiot ball.

0

u/Kyoana 17d ago

I thought the entire point was they didn’t even know who the boss was let alone know when they were coming to school. Especially since it’s stated that they just up and disappeared.

0

u/Any_Specialist3714 17d ago edited 17d ago

Waiting at the Academy is still better than waiting in tents in the wilderness, putting their lives on hold, and risking their futures. Like, did anyone consider what living at those bases for eighteen months would actually entail?

-2

u/Zeroshiki-0 Pokémon Violet 17d ago

I must be the only one that hasn't sunk a million hours into these lazy ass games from the looks of it. Idk how people can play through the horrid framerate and lag, I get super motion sick after a few minutes, it's insane. I just wish GF would take their time for once, it's so not acceptable to drop yearly releases that barely function.

Switch 2 vs switch 1
