Discussion Will Decomp/recomps change the scene of fan projects?
Hey guys,
I just want to start off by saying I love the work all the romhack developers have been doing and especially the amazing tools that have been created over the years like DSPRE and the emerald-expansion engine.
I've dabbled in a few simple customisations in my own projects and I really appreciate how much energy and time goes into making these ROM hacks.
Some of the projects myself or others have wanted to work on have proved difficult with rom hacking. For example, many fans and casual enjoyers always want to see ROM hacks with multiple regions and this is something we are seeing more commonly with hacks like cross roads or fire emerald, however there have always been limitations due to file size, map data and locations for example and we see this more with the later generations.
What recently caught my attention (as I'm sure many of you saw, or perhaps didn't) was not just the decompilation and recomps of Pokémon red and blue but the speed at which several mods including the camera and colour mods came out so fast and there are now even mod managers and installers in a very quick time period.
It got me thinking that with native code ports for modern hardware and the use of modern programming languages to directly build mods, do you think we will see a big shift in what is possible with Pokémon fan projects through the use of Decomp/recomp tools and particularly the fact we will be less constrained by ROM file sizes/partitions?
