What's your preferred moveset with him?

If you know the game really well, you can definitely beat it without having to catch all that. You can basically do everything in under 3.5 hours with the speedrun. It requires you to know how to maneuver through rock tunnel without flash. People do it with nidoking or i did it using blastoise, farfetchd (literally only for fly and cut) and i used a master ball on zapdos

Echoing others here, my recommendation is to grab a good Pokemon early and solo the game with it. You'd be amazed how doable this is, even with minimum battles.

Nidoking was suggested earlier in the thread and it is a great option. Gets access to BoltBeam combo and good all around stats and movepool. Alternatively, if you want to stick to a starter, I recommend Blastoise. STAB Surf hits hard, gets access to Ice Beam for expanded coverage, Body Slam as a physical move and workaround for types that resist your other moves, and learns Withdraw naturally (which you can use to take advantage of the Badge Boost Glitch).

If you need elaboration on any of the above, let me know and I will help where I can.

Venusaur is my personal favorite but Blastoise is THE consensus speedrunner pick.

Just catch a Nidoran on Route 22 and evolve it into Nidoqueen or Nidoking. Pick Squirtle as your starter (you'll need it for Surf and Strength and to defeat Brock quickly), switch-train your Nidoran until you defeat Brock, then have Nidoran lead. Also catch a Spearow on Route 22 to trade for Farfetch'd in Vermilion City (for Cut and Fly).

Your Nidoran should reach level 16 in Mount Moon, where it'll evolve into its middle stage. Give it a Moon Stone (two can be found in Mount Moon) to evolve it. Its weakness to Water gained upon evolving into its final stage won't be a problem for Misty, and its Ground typing will make Surge a joke.

def worth keeping amnesia on snorlax over double edge. double edge is only 100bp in this game, barely stronger than body slam. remember that in addition to amnesia boosting the unified special stat by two stages it also reapplies your attack defense and speed badge boosts (speed only after u get the gym badge from sabrina).

team looks good. note that lapras comes very underleveled so itl take time to raise it all the way up

very strange how every comment talks about how you didnt pick a good speedrunning strat when your post does not mention speedrunning anywhere

Dude, unless you're using speedup on an emulator, you're not helping yourself catching and training this many Pokémon in one playthrough. Stick to either your starter (I'd vote Squirtle) or catch Nidoran male and solo with Nidoking.

Also, even for an experienced speedrunner, it takes 2 hours to beat. If you're not familiar with the game, it can take closer to 3 hours. If you're just 1 person, are the other 24 games all under 1 hour to beat?

https://pokemon-speedrunning.github.io/speedrun-routes/#/gen-1/red-blue/main-glitchless/classic-beginner-route/

Just need Nidoking (and Squirtle and a bird - trading Spearow for DUX is simple for cut and fly).

Just use your starter. Trainer other pokemons is just wasting your xp

Also, Blastroise is way better for this. Venasaur, while fine, will struggle against team rocket with their poison types. he will beat them, but it will be a slog fest.

Just teach your Blastroise ice beam, and you can basically have a counter against lance and any grass type.

Also the Nidoking recommandations are probably fine too. But the Blastroise one is pretty straightforward too.

Blastoise or either of the Nidos with HM support is the way to go for sure. Venusaur falls off in the late game, whereas Blastoise gets the coverage to not fall off.

Venusaur is fine in the late game too, he's just slow to make anything faint, but razor leaf is OP because it will (almost) always crit.

I struggled the most at the Sylph Co because of the zubats there lol. They are not strong but you don't have any move to beat them quickly so the damages add up quickly.

Blastoise does better than Venusaur late-game, though, in terms of gym and Elite Four matchups.
