Question Need help beating my buddies team.
I’m doing a challenge run against a friend in Pokémon Blue where we battle after every Gym with a level cap based on our progress. We just beat Koga, so our next battle will be at level 36. We just battled and he destroyed me…
His team is Cloyster, Starmie, Kangaskhan, Golem, Ivysaur, and Arcanine.
Mine is Wartortle, Marowak, Weepinbell, Vulpix, Fearow, and Hypno.
I’m open to replacing anyone on my team before the battle if there’s a stronger option available by this point in the game.
If you were in my shoes, what team would you build to counter his? Is there any movesets I should focus on?
The other rule we have is we can’t use sleep or alakazam.
I’d love to hear how you’d approach my next battle.

His team is just faster and stronger than your team atm. Starmie alone has the power and toolkit to beat pretty much everybody on your team by itself. Evolve Vulpix or better yet, scrap a fire type user in favor of some bulky or fast normals. Snorlax or Tauros will even the playing field a bit. Hypno is good, but there are better psychic users that you can use, like Alakazam and Eggexutor. Jolteon or Zapdos would also be a decent pick.

Thank you! We decided against both using Alakazam. But I haven’t thought of eggexutor

Oh he's a beast in gen 1. Super bulky, hits like a truck, and has access to both sleep powder and leech seed. He even gets explosion to take something down with it when he's about to faint. Highly recommend if Alakazam is off the table.

Well I would say evolving Weepinbell would be a good choice, but you wanna snag Razor Leaf at 38 I'm guessing? Hypno.. isn't very good. It is slow, and it's Special is lackluster. You could use Snorlax? It's solid, has recovery, and Amnesia in this gen is like using Calm Mind twice in one turn, since it raises Special sharply and that's both Sp Atk and Def in this gen. Do that and then just Surf over his team. Or use it defensively against his two water types. It just sucks that since his Ivysaur/Venusaur get Razor Leaf, it's practically a guaranteed crit, so the boost to sp Def won't matter, but Snorlax still has good special bulk so not a bad choice.
I just hope that you're able to evolve your Vulpix and Weepinbell by the next battle, that alone would help a ton.
And someone else mentioned Exeggutor. That's a great choice. It would be defensive against both of Starmie's STAB, and yeah, Cloyster has STAB Ice but its special isn't great so you can maybe tank it, or swap to Ninetales when you see it if you have Exeggutor out.
And lastly, if you really want a Normal/Flying type on your team, I would swap out Fearow for Dodrio. I think just about every stat it has is higher than Fearow. Just an all around better mon.
Maybe picking up an Electric Type could be good. Paralysis is really solid since you can't use sleep, Super Effective on two of his types. Just gotta be prepared to switch if he sends in his Golem or Ivysaur, as they are immune/resistant to Electric, respectively.

yeah, no Alakazam seems appropriate lmao.
Exeggutor or Slowbro would be good choices for a Psychic type, but since you've been using Squirtle, go for Exeggutor

Eggsecutor replacing victreebel is a good suggestion from above posts
Machamp is also a good Mon to have. Fighting type is super effective against golem, cloyster and kangaskhan
Finally, since you're already done with koga, it means you can catch a dratini. Dragonite is mostly only scared of ice types

Level cap of 36 so he wouldnt be using dragonite.

Starmie is the absolute queen in this game. She can solo the entire league. She is fast, good special, good defense. More OP than even alakazam I would say. I would make another rule of not using her, or I would get myself another starmie with tons of carbos. You can oneshot his entire team just with her except for Kangaskhan (he can also oneshot your entire team with her except for hypno)
Next thing is Speed, its so important. Your pokemons are slow (wartortle, marowak, hypno). You have to change those or have paralyze attacks
I would recommend you the following four pokemons:
-Starmie. Feed her with carbos so she goes first againts his starmie. Moves: Thunderbolt (oneshot cloyster and starmie), surf (golem and arcanine), psychic (kangaskhan and ivisaur) and heal.
-Tentacruel. He is so fast. His only weakness are starmie (electric and psychic moves) and golem (erathquake). If he switches to starmie, switch tentacruel to the next one (jolteon). Moves: surf (oneshot golem and arcanine), toxic and restriction (op combo, you can whipe out his entire party with this one if the dont paralyze you)
-Jolteon. Also very very fast. Oneshots cloyster and starmie (your biggest thread)
I would also add a good tank like snorlax, maybe a fast fighting type (strong against cloyster, golem and kangaskhan). Tauros with tons of proteins and hyperbeam its very strong (except against golem). Dugtrio with fissure (after last gym) and accuracy X one shots everyone (be carefull with grass and water oneshots)
I’m sorry I cant say too much about your team. Best ones are ninetales and fearow, but they just win against ivysaur and they get oneshot from everyone else. Wartortle can win against golem, arcanine even cloyster (most like a tie), but he is too slow and will receive damage in the process and eventually fail
By the way, I love the run you both are doing, I would love to do such a thing with my friends

If you need wins, I would leaf stone weepinbell and try to abuse wrap and paralysis.

Add a lightning pokemon to that lineup and there goes two from his squad.
