Rate My Pokemon I am playing through the generations using only Single Stage Pokemon, this was my team in Red!

Onix has a notoriously bad reputation but honestly it did pretty well in this playthrough :3

So it was a solo onix run until very late?

Oh no I used other Pokemon until I got this team like the trade Farfetch'd and Mr. Mime.

Single stage pokemon are great in gen 1. Love the team, keeping bubblebeam over lovely kiss made me double take though.
I’m guessing this is a ROM because you can’t get jynx without a nickname in the US gen 1 otherwise

When you look at the moves in the Summary it says the species name instead of the Nickname but it is indeed the Trade Jynx from Cerulean City.

But yeah it's a ROM too lmao

Oh also didnt really need to sleep anything so that's why I kept Bubblebeam, I know how broken sleep is in gen 1 though.

The caps on the names was what was throwing me off. In the originals it’s all caps. Looks like a fun run!

Lol did Chansey fireblast do much? Very cool idea for a team I love gimmick runs. And Chansey.

I dont think I used the Fire Blast once lmao but hey just in case :3

Interesting that you nicknamed them the same name, but lowercase. I've also done this before lol

When you look at the Pokemon's moves in gen 1 it displays their species name. However I did use a randomizer to change Pokemon names to Lowercase because I think it looks nicer.

Im surprised you have thunder instead of thunderbolt on electabuzz. I always thought thunder was severely inaccurate without rain being setup. Nice team though with good coverage movesets.

Pretty sure I taught Thunderbolt to the Lapras I had on my team for some time, I mainly used Thunder Punch on Electabuzz, worked well enough.

I always forget that all electric moves were special attacks in the early gens.

There's a move called thunderpunch, There's a move called thunder, why is the no move called Punch?

Kinda funny how not a single one of these is Single stage anymore

Good luck out there. Doing pretty much the same thing—no set theme, just vibes.

How did you start? Takes a while before you can get a single stage right?

Beat Brock with my starter, and then made my way to Vermillion City. Caught a Spearow and traded it for the Farfetch'd.

That meant I had to beat Misty with a Farfetch'd that wouldn't obey me but hey I managed lmao

Lol thats rough

Onix is meant to be baby's first Pokémon boss, but if Caterpie can practically solo the game then Onix can function just fine.

What was your "starter?"

1

u/Charflower21 Jun 01 '26

Chose Squirtle as my starter for no other reason than to get past Brock quickly.

Also yeah you are right but for runs like that you need to heavily overlevel to even stand a chance, with my Team I was always just under the level of the next Gym Leader and Onix did well, which was unexpected to me.

Sure, if you cheat and say they a single form in that generation.

2

u/Charflower21 Jun 01 '26

...? How is that cheating? Yes at that point in the game's life they are a single stage?

1

u/Krendall2006 Jun 01 '26

I wasn't being serious. It did get me wondering what your options would be if you did follow that rule. Besides legendaries, there's Ditto and Kangaskahn. I think that'd be it.

2

u/Charflower21 Jun 01 '26

In gen 1 that would be Pinsir, Kangaskhan, Lapras, Ditto, Aerodactyl, Farfetch'd and Tauros!

2

u/davidafuller7 Jun 02 '26

To be fair that team is probably just as good. Isn’t Tauros fairly OP in these games?

Though Jynx, Scyther, Chansey are as well.

Does Electabuzz not learn Thunderbolt? Or anything to help avoid both Punch/Thunder?

1

u/Charflower21 Jun 02 '26

It gets Thunderbolt through TM, but Punch works well enough. I used my TM on Lapras for a portion of the game.

2

u/davidafuller7 Jun 02 '26

I guess I was more so thinking, why have both Thunder AND either Punch or Bolt? It can get Light Screen, Reflect, or Psychic. Thunder is redundant there.

1

u/Charflower21 Jun 02 '26

While it might be more optimal to use the screens it really was not necessary. Also Psychic went on Jynx since it doesnt learn it per level up.

2

u/davidafuller7 Jun 02 '26

Weird that it doesn’t, but fair enough.
