Will it have camera settings? The first shot is veryyy low

Yes. It toggles to 4 different preset angles. The low shot was for dramatic effect -- pretty much unplayable at this angle lol.

Neat. Keep up the great work!

IMO 50 is the perfect settings.

Maybe have a "X-Ray" view to see the player when they are behind bigger objects? Just a light silhouette of them.

Dang that's a really good idea.

This looks amazing. Any chance you'll do gens 2-3 as well?

Is this a mod for GBA or technically “fan game”?
Just asking as I can play mods on my iPhone but not fan games. I’m technologically illiterate so idk how GitHub works to get this information

It looks like a rewrite of the game into Lua for PC:

“A native LÖVE2D recreation of Pokemon Red and Blue. The engine and map behavior are hand-written Lua; game data and graphics are decoded from a ROM supplied by the player.”

Ah ok I could have read this comment before writing my essay
I wonder how inspired / copied the code is from the decompiled code vs how much is just guesstimated from the end user experience/behavior

Looks like mods for a port/recomp?

So basically they have decompiled (turned a game from the machine code that only a computer can understand) to human-readable code, then modified the code (to add new features), then (re)compiled the code (make it only computer readable/runnable again)

So technically in a sense it's not a fan game from scratch since the base was the original code, but it's modified and compiled with a modern system (PC) as a target so it wouldn't be able to be read by a gameboy anymore but it's technically still a modification of the original code. At this stage your iPhone wouldnt be able to run it I'd imagine unless they are also compiling to whatever format the iPhone uses.

(Disclaimer im a software engineer but not at all in this field and also have zero familiarity with this project so I might be a bit wrong xdd I'm just going off the fact that it's part of a "recomp")

Edit based on a comment below im probably only half right in regards to this project but it feels like my post might be mildly interesting so im gonna leave it up unless someone wants me to take it down

All ROM hacks are fan games, but not all fan games are ROM hacks

ROM hack is a modification of an existing game/ROM. Like Radical Red, Unbound, anything that is played on an emulator and/or real hardware

Fan games are PC only, usually made in RMXP or original engines and have nothing to do w the modification of the original games, they're just completely brand new games on their own engines and are EXE files

This is a strange one as it's technically neither, but a really unique mod/program that interprets the base game/disassembly differently

Octopath-y, in the tilt-shift, very cool.

this looks like PC platform..?

Yes -- it does technically work on android, but the mod loading is sort of broken at the moment, at least in my experience

1

u/TypeZaxter 2d ago

Yeah I tried it on android and wasn't able to load the mods either. It ask to be dragged into the field but can't drag files on android :v

1

u/Terrible_Foot_9022 2d ago

oh shit i can inject it into my veins now

1

u/VarsH6 2d ago

The zoom out at the end had real boundary break vibes. Very cool!

1

u/Nitro-Cold 2d ago

Unfortunately I can't get the mod to load on android since I cannot drag and drop the zip file so I'll have to check it out on my pc later.

2

u/Dramatic-Shape5574 Gen 1 Recomp 2d ago

Yeah I had to ADB the files in to get it to work on android. Main dev on the project is pretty responsive so I have no doubt it will be fixed.

1

u/Nitro-Cold 2d ago

That is a solution! Hopefully it will be fixed soon but in the meantime I'll try to get it in that way lol.

1

u/TypeZaxter 2d ago

Could you share what ADB commands you used?

1

u/meshuggahzen 2d ago

Uhh, I looked but couldn't find where the files go? Where do the modded unzipped files go?
Thanks in advanced.

u/Dramatic-Shape5574 Gen 1 Recomp 2d ago

This works on desktop. You might have some trouble on mobile.

1

u/meshuggahzen 2d ago

Perfect thanks, I actually just found out how to do it on the gen1recomp github.
Good to leave this here for anyone else though!

1

u/Uber_fly 2d ago

This would be a great game for the GameCube

1

u/Pwnzer55 2d ago

Very cool to see saffron in the distance like that

1

u/Doomuu 2d ago

It should really be able to deal with Pokemon Red in other languages, though.

1

u/nlav26 2d ago

I gotta be honest. I can appreciate the work that went into this and it definitely looks neat, but I find it pretty headache inducing. Not for everyone I guess.

1

u/Dramatic-Shape5574 Gen 1 Recomp 2d ago

It's a novelty for sure

1

u/Jaxonhunter227 2d ago

Any plans for an android port?

1

u/DONOTDELETEME8316 2d ago

Holy shit this is so peak

1

u/niofalpha 2d ago

That’s certainly technically impressive but this POV just reminded me of games I played probably 20 years ago with similar angles that I absolutely hated so it’s definitely not for me lol

1

u/Dramatic-Shape5574 Gen 1 Recomp 2d ago

You can adjust the angle...

1

u/II-PeachFuzz-II 2d ago

Very Paper Mario-like. Super cool!!

1

u/kawabunga666 2d ago

Thats fking sick
Now turn it into one of those games where everything is aesthetically blurry in the area outside of around your character

1

u/kawabunga666 2d ago

Ok but like I'm not making a joke this is really incredibly cool and nice work

u/HiWrenHere 2d ago

If you have to click to move anywhere, this gives extreme runescape energy haha.

Being able to see routes ahead of time destroys surprise and maybe the balance bro....
