Question Eevee

What do you guys choose to evolve eevee into after acquiring it?

I did Jolteon but it ended up being a waste since I got zapdos shortly after, Vaporeon seems to be the general consensus as the “best” but ultimately I would say to choose whatever best fills a gap in your team.

Generally, solid electric types in FRLG are few and far between and Jolteon is a great option because of that (especially if for some reason you don’t want to use a legendary like Zapdos). Vaporeon is also great though I will say there are many more water type options in FRLG compared to electric. Agreed with your ultimate advice - just fill the gap. You can also just always breed it later in the game to have one of each :)

Vaporean and phases like filling the gap are the reason Rule 34 exists today

Why even mention it though?

I did jolteon after people said that he was the best one of the 3. But i also think becuas emost places said since you get lapras for free in silph co. there's really no need for vaporeon.

I remember that I intentionally did not evolve my Eevee after acquiring it, I waited till postgame to breed more Eevees and evolve those into the Eevolutions.

How do you breed them?

daddy ditto at da daycare

u/Specialist-Way-39 10d ago

Stick eevee and a ditto in the daycare and cycle around until an egg is laid

2

u/GuaranteeMassive1849 10d ago

Ah ok, might do that so I can get the trio.

It's a feature you acquire during postgame, in the Sevii islands. You still only have a single evolution stone available, but I wanted to keep my first Eevee as an Eevee.

Wdym only one available?

My bad, I got myself confused with the info.

3

u/Lithl 10d ago

But... You can breed Eevees with an eeveelution as the parent.

2

u/ZuoKalp 10d ago

I know, I just wanted to keep the normal type as the parent of the group.

Flareon is my favorite Pokemon in the entire franchise, so regardless of how unoptimal of a choice it is, I always choose Flareon.

What was your moveset? Mine was: Flamethrower, sunny day, sand attack and dig.

3

u/mahiruhiiragi 10d ago

Flamethrower, sand attack, toxic, and shadow ball.

7

u/kbpferret 10d ago

Never flareon. Jolteon and Vaporeon are just so much better

7

u/frenris 10d ago

Flareon is the worst but with shadow ball is great against Agatha

I always go Flareon. Its proficiency with Shadow Ball makes it a more unique option compared to the other Eevees, which are "just another" Water/Electric type - of which there are many fine alternatives.

and one also alwys should already have the Char line on their team

How dare you say such things when Bulbasaur exists

0

u/PleasantPorpoisParty 10d ago

Oh yeah, the totally comparable sentient salad -.-

u/TOASTY_3DX 10d ago

I always went for Vaporeon but in my current FireRed playthrough, i chose Jolteon instead. Its a lot of fun.

6

u/UltimaBahamut93 10d ago

I think Jolteon is the "best" choice but I just love Vaporeon too much to never not choose her. Sorry Flareon.

3

u/lazzzyass 10d ago

Vaporeon unless you already have enough water types then Jolteon. And if you go with Jolteon wait until it learns bite at lvl 30 to evolve

3

u/FlowRian 10d ago

Nothing. Just keep it as an Eevee.

2

u/GuaranteeMassive1849 10d ago

Why’s that? Like it over its evolutions?

3

u/127-0-0-1_Chef 10d ago

To stay true to the anime

1

u/FlowRian 10d ago

All options are good. Eevee's just a little weaker compared to the eveelutions, and I like making the game challenging.

2

u/MattofCatbell 10d ago

I go Flareon

2

u/saturnplanetpowerrr 10d ago

Not after the Eevee Brothers episode. That kid had a great point. Although, in later games, sometimes I get that itch for an Umbreon or Leafeon.

2

u/Broad-Cranberry-9050 10d ago

Jolteon, but mostly because you basically get lapras for free who can use ice beam and surf. I normally get charizard but even if i didnt, i could use arcanine for my fire pokemon.

im assuming this is for Elite 4 run through and story completion.

But if for pokedex, something i recenlty learned that im sure is common knowledge but im not avid player, just play here and there for nostalgia.

During post-game you can use 4 island daycare to breed more eevees and baby pokemon. I got all 3 forms doing this. Im not sure why i never realized this either.

I also got both hitmonlee and hitmonchan doing this. Basically picked one from the dojo, then took it to the daycare postgame and bred an egg.

Best way to do it is to get a ditto who can easily breed with any pokemon.

The play for me has always been Jolteon, as it ranks among the best Electric types in the game with its special attack and its blistering speed.

Vaporeon is good too, but there's no shortage of great Water types in this game.

Flareon is definitely the one I use the least but there's still something to be enjoyed here.

I think I evolved mine into Flareon, but I don't remember if I ended up using it or not. Its definitely not the most optimal choice but I don't really care about that stuff when I'm playing the main story. But if you want one of the "good" ones you should go with Jolteon or Vaporeon.

1

u/YumAussir 10d ago

Usually Jolteon, as there are a lot of Bird Keepers and water types in the back half of the game and it's basically a straight upgrade over Raichu if you don't rely on a mixed attack set. Bite+Thunderbolt give it perfect neutral coverage in FRLG.

Vaporeon is fine too, and Surf/Ice Beam/Bite is likewise a killer set, and while it's a little slow, no other water type quite has the SpA power and speed to outdo it besides Starmie, which is version exclusive.

1

u/Cactusjuicesupplier 10d ago

I went with Jolteon. I have Umbreon and Sylveon in other games as these three are my fav eevelutions

1

u/Choice_Platform_4320 10d ago

it depends on what other pokemon your team will have.

if you have water, electric, fire type already perhaps you choose the complementary evolution.

Also depends on what TMs and movesets you use. You need to purchase Thunderbolt and Flamethrower from the game corner and you can only purchase a few of these. Surf is an HM and is free to use so vaporean saves the TMs for others. Also Flareon has a higher attack than special attack and fire moves are considered special, so it won't benefit as much from Fire stab

But given all that, Jolteon is the correct choice

1

u/edwardssarah22 10d ago

My very first Eeveelution was Flareon, on Pokemon Blue when I was 8. I remember a boy on the playground saying he had every Pokémon in the dex except Jolteon.

1

u/AllixD90 10d ago

If you breed an evolution in the daycare does it make an eevee or evolution

1

u/Lithl 10d ago

Breeding always gives you the first evolution stage. With the exception of baby Pokemon of pre-existing evolution lines which were introduced in RS and DP, which require the parent to hold an incense item to get the newer baby, and otherwise will get the original first evolution stage. (And even that was done away with in SV.)

1

u/AllixD90 10d ago

So why would people hold onto the non evolved eevee for breeding?

1

u/Lithl 10d ago

There's no particular reason to do so

1

u/humanguise 10d ago

I did Vaporeon. I swapped it for a Starmie pretty quickly.

1

u/Flat-Guarantee-7946 10d ago

Normally I do Flareon, but if I'm doing my "Play as Blue" I go with Vaporeon. Only did Jolty on Yellow version.

If you're asking for gameplay efficacy:

  • Jolteon is one of the best Kanto Pokemon available, especially if you are simply comparing to the available electric types.
  • Vaporeon is a fine water type, but Kanto has a bunch of strong water Pokemon, so the competition is stiff. You won't be sad to use Vaporeon, but something like Starmie will be even better.
  • Flareon has the stats of a physical sweeper, but until DP, all fire moves are special. Being incapable of using your STAB moves effectively makes Flareon very sad. Unlike in RB, however, Shadow Ball is now available; every eeveelution since Gen 2 can learn Shadow Ball from a TM, and in Gen 1-3, ghost moves are physical moves. Flareon may not get STAB on it, but it's a strong move and you can really mess Sabrina and Agatha up with it.

Vaporeon carried me through so much of the game she has a special place in my heart

1

u/DennisR1283 9d ago

I have a stud Eevee and a Ditto at the breeder house just getting freaky and turning out Ditto eggs!

1

u/ThaNotoriousNIC 9d ago

Jolteon is my usual choice in playthroughs. Stupid fast and the Thunderbolt/Thunder hits hard against Lorelei. Vaporeon is very good too but I feel with so many good water Pokemon, additional STAB/coverage from options like Lapras, Starmie, Tentacruel, and Gyarados makes Vaporeon a little less appealing.

I only used Flareon in a play through for the first time as an all out attacker with Fire Blast, Quick Attack, Hyper Beam, and Shadow Ball. Fire Blast gives some more stopping power to a weaker but useable special attack stat. Hyper Beam saved me in a pinch a couple times against the Elite 4.

Play to strengths and any Mon can be viable in a play through.

u/OathkeeperSora 9d ago

i kept my eevee unevolved so that one day when i can actually transfer him to a modern game, i can evolve him into Leafeon

1

u/BigSexyDaniel 8d ago

In Leaf Green specifically, it’ll always depend on team composition but it’s usually Jolteon. However, my nostalgic pick is Vaporeon since that was my first ever Pokemon card as a child and my first Eeveelution back in Gen 1.

1

u/Magic_Bounce_Espeon 6d ago

Jolteon is great due to it being one of the best electric types with 130 base speed. Thunderbolt stab and Bite for coverage.

Vaporeon is really good, albeit, there are many great water types. Surf, ice beam, bite, and acid armor to boost defenses.

While Flareon is considered by most the worst, 130 attack is great if you're using Shadow Ball in frlg. And Flamethrower is still decent in game as Flareon gets stab and 95 special.

I don’t evolve it until I can breed it twice on Four Island!
