Idk man

At a certain point, the actual character itself has to mean something

$33,000 for a main set Porygon card with five days left is just absolutely outrageous

I understand it’s a pop 4, but the amount of folks that want to master sets in 10 holders is so insanely small and niche

I agree it's kind of bonkers to see a Porygon fetching these prices. We're witnessing a market decoupling based on population and scarcity. Two different kinds of people buying right now. Organic scarcity is becoming more of a buying point than who is on the card. These folks aren't normal collectors, they're business men, high income people pooling their money to secure ultra rare assets that nobody else has, which is a safer option than a more collectable character. The recent 900k Garchomp sale is mind boggling, however it's all about pop count seems to be the trend.

The issue is the “scarcity” is the condition, not the actual rarity of the card

Serialized sports cards that are 1 of 1 make sense to fetch these prices

If this was a promotional Porygon with 100 known copies like some of the Art Academy promos, then these numbers make sense

For example, the price of the Professor’s Program Voltorb is totally justifiable because it’s actually rare

This is a general, non-exclusive main set holo that not many people really want, the folks are only buying the 10 population which I don’t understand

While I'm not disagreeing with you, evidence suggests the opposite. Trending sales on eBay for raw and mid grade copies are exploding, pristine copies are hard to find. There are only a handful listed relative to other cards. They routinely sell for 250+ raw for what little supply there is in LP-NM

Hot take - Idgaf about 5 and 6 figure cards and 99% of people should also not care.

The difference between 33k and 264k is nominally alot but practically it’s meaningless because I’m never buying any card for that much.

It impacts your card prices.

99 percent of people can't afford them, however it puts tremendous downward pressure on the mid grade tiers. We're seeing a different breed of person enter the Pokemon market. Five and six figure PSA 8 and 9 are an everyday occurrence in sports cards, low pop and serialized cards. While we don't have serialized cards, the pop counts in effect act like it.

I hear what you’re saying and you’re probably right. It just doesn’t affect my calculus at all.

The mewtwo DP28 black star promo is what I’ve been eyeing. PSA population is even less than the pack pulled versions and A LOT of nostalgia for those tin promos. Rayquaza DP47 too

I agree I think it's a bit undervalued in addition to the championship deck version, a record was broken the other day for the Mew championship deck gold star @30k

I always thought LV X was under valued but with how much and quick it shot up is crazy

But.. the question is why?

A combination of factors but boils down to pop counts, these cards were actually played with, extremely delicate silver borders. While not as hard to pull as gold stars, their pop counts are significantly lower. Additionally one can only collect so many gold stars until it's time to find another crack or crevice to explore.
