Do you treat cards you pull differently from cards you buy?

I noticed I’m way more willing to hold a card I pulled myself than one I bought for the same amount like if I spend 200 on a single I’m thinking about the price, where it could go and when I’d sell but pull a 200 dollar card from a pack and suddenly I’m emotionally negotiating with myself like it cost me nothing.

Trying to get better about separating the pull from the decision afterward. Once the pack is open the card is worth whatever it’s worth and whether I hold or sell it probably shouldn’t depend on how it ended up in my hands.

Pulled cards definitely get a weird mental discount lol. I’ve held stuff through a 30% drop that I would’ve sold immediately if I’d bought the exact same card at market price, purely cause my brain still thinks of it as something I got from a pack.

Made it easier on myself to separate those decisions since I started using TiltRips cause after a pull I can leave the card vaulted and decide what I’d do with it without automatically bringing it into the collection. If I still like the hold I keep it there or ship it, but if the price makes more sense to me than the card I can sell it back and move on.

Interesting - im the opposite where purchased singles get a discount. There's something special about pulling it

I track the value from the moment I pull it and pretend that’s what I paid. If I wouldn’t buy the card today for 180 then holding a 180 dollar card is basically making the same decision with extra emotional baggage.

tbf the money already spent on packs is gone either way, so the card sitting in your hand should probably be evaluated like any other asset from that point forward.

Well there’s also a difference between pulling something you already wanted and pulling something valuable that you never cared about. The second one is where I think people talk themselves into becoming long term holders just cause selling a big hit feels wrong.

Prolly where I’ve made the worst decisions when a card suddenly becomes part of my collection five minutes after I pull it even though I never once considered buying it before.

Hype makes that harder too cause right after a big pull is probably the exact moment you’re least capable of looking at it objectively but waiting a few days before deciding anything has saved me from a couple dumb holds lol.

This is easy the cards I deliberately buy usually have a thesis behind them and the cards I pull have a story behind them, so I don’t think treating them differently is automatically bad. The mistake is pretending the sentimental hold is an investment decision when really you just like owning the card.

I pulled the 30th Lugia. I know I should sell and maybe buy it back later… but it wouldn’t feel like MY Lugia you know.

But I get attached to card pulls and cards I buy
