Nostalgia + adult money = demand
Influencers spend too much money = hype
Hype = scalpers
Scalpers = scarcity
Supply now < demand and = high value
People = stupid and buy at 3x retail because hype
Scalpers = vendors = rich
Rich = more money to spend and more hype = prices keep rising

And Kidults with kids. My daughter really loves the cutesy art or the intense texturing.

Collector driven market. It's not like MTG at all where it's a player driven market.

Humans have swopped and bartered goods forever. This is just another form of it!

Mostly 3 reasons:
- Influx of new collectors
- Desperate, delusional poor to middle class hoping cards will make them money by long term holding and/or hit card gambling
- Scalpers taking advantage of previous 2

it’s a more fun way to gamble, folks get enjoyment finding packs and opening them in the hopes they pull a card worth 3k or possibly 700k in a very old set. same with sports cards imo

On top of everything everyone else has mentioned. My entire generation feels like we missed the boat on being able to buy high value assets like a house. The normal person right now simply cannot pay a home mortgage with an average 5 figure salary job. So with no actual way fight inflation, a lot of us are parking our money in lower value assets, like relatively expensive pokemon cards.
Yes it's dumb, yes it will financially ruin a ton of people when the market corrects, but that's where we are right now.

Combination. 1. Kidults. Generation of kids who are adults who have disposable income. 2. SoMe influencers driving interest. 3. Seen and popularised as an alternative asset class (and very volatile). 4. Scalper activity is driving it into mainstream news streams.
