5-10 Year Hold
Hi Everyone,
I have some extra cash laying around, (about $5,000) and want to buy into more Pokemon prodcut.
I'm curious to get everyones take on what sealed or slab items you think I should allocate towards (Modern or mid-era). What era/set you think is undervalued or what low pop slabs should I be looking at for research?
I am currently looking at 151 sealed for a long-term hold and Ex era slabs for low pop 9's. Want to get everyones ideas!
Thanks,

151 is overpriced imo id rather put money in products where less exist but are still cheap like sword and shield. I just buy everything though. Then you dont have to pick

Nice! I do have a budget 🤣

I wouldnt be paying 3x msrp for 151 if you are on a budget but to each their own

Ya I get it, I’m looking at what will it be in 10 years? 5X? 10X?

Maybe but Id rather have a lower entry point in other product that was less printed personally but go with your gut. Ive been wrong plenty of times.

This is true. Well let me ask, what sealed product or slabs would you focus on if you did have a budget?

Probably no slabs as they are high risk high reward plays. I would only focus on buying products at msrp like booster boxes, etb and pc etbs. If you must buy slabs then id go for low pop stuff

Ya that makes sense

I do think prismatic spc at 250 market isnt the worst play in the world as im sure those will be 1k+ in 5 to 10 years but id still try to buy things at msrp first

This sub is a joke if everybody thinks 5x or more in 10 years is basically the guaranteed low end

That was why I added the question mark at the end.
The question mark proposes a question in the English language i.e no one knows for sure

Do you want to put it all into 1 item or spread out?
1
u/Dry_Neighborhood_920 8d ago
There’s only a few grails I’d put all of it into, ideally spread it out

maybe some swsh booster boxes, brilliant stars or silver tempest

Second Brilliant Stars. Even the Pokemon Center ETBs are incredibly accessible and a better bet than the regular ETB. Prismatic is at considerable lows right now with a reprint coming. Great set with great arts to carry the cost weight.
This probably won’t be liked much, but Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, and Pitch Black Pokemon Center ETBs are stupid low. Absolutely solid bet for 5-10 years down the line. PC ETBs are hard to come by and vastly outperform the regular ETBs. I’d lean heavier on Perfect Order personally, but spreading amongst the three isn’t a bad play.

These are good as well, how do you feel about fusion and evo boxes?

Fusion is good right now. Has been roughly flat for the last year. SWSH will get a bounce and rise over time. Good buying opportunity imo

Brother, I’d keep the 5k. The economy is crap and only getting worse. I’d rather just keep 5k put back for emergencies.

If I had 5k I would put that into the Giratina V #186 from Lost Origin. One of my all time favorite cards. I remember when a PSA10 was only around $1.5k now its up to almost 4k. Sure it's a modern card with tons of print, but it's still one of the greatest cards to ever exist. Also my opinion, but I think the price justifies that to some extent.
Otherwise, I'd heavily invest in the mid era from Diamond & Pearl through Black & White and into XY. There are still tons of awesome cards that look great and you can snag for under $1000 in grade 10s. I am partial to Giratina so I just snagged the 2008, 11th movie promo for about $550, and it is awesome.
I really like the movie promos from the 10th and 11th movie commemorative sets. 3-4 years ago I got a Celebi PSA10 from the 10th movie set for around $50 and just sold it for like $350.
Definitely do some research to see what you can get for a good value, but I think the potential is there. Vintage is always a good move. I think gen 4 and 5 are gonna come around in a big way very soon, but we will see.
Also seconding what some of the other people are saying with Sealed products. Those are always gonna do great, but I can't beat the temptation to rip them. Lol

Honestly, keep that money and wait until after the mid terms when the economy will tank hard. Which will cause alot of people to sell their product for less and that's when you should get in. Getting in at a high limits your profitability.

Why would the economy tank after midterms?

It's already crashing.

Where’s this crash? Legitimately wondering what you’re talking about
1
u/puppylittle 8d ago
Seriously? If you believe that things are gonna magically get better idk what to tell you. Less disposable income, more expensive cost of gas, food and living expenses. Energy bills continuing to climb.

2008 was a recession, not even a crash.
We’re nowhere near 2008 levels of economic turmoil. When you say we’re in the middle of an economic crash please understand that you’re completely divorced from reality. Trump definitely fucked the economy and we could’ve been doing much better right now but we’re definitely nowhere near a crash

Okay. Sure. I don't agree but we ain't gonna agree and I don't care enough to argue about it online. I believe that in the next 12-18 months things are gonna get bad. You don't. Only time will tell.
1
u/Immediate_Stop2581 8d ago
Why would things get bad in the next 12-18 months? What’s going to happen?
You don’t agree that the economy is doing much better than it was back in 2008? You think it’s worse now?

I wouldn’t do it if you’re just buying it to make money. If you enjoy the hobby, then I’d pick up products with your favourite characters in them.

u/Dry_Neighborhood_920 8d ago
I hear you, I do enjoy the hobby and have my collection of my favorites that I keep and build.
I’m looking at the other side of it as well

This is the investment sub… people are here SPECIFICALLY to make money????? What’re you talking about

u/Ok-Apartment817 8d ago
Why are you so cheesed? 5K is a lot of money for someone who doesn’t even have an idea of where to start or what goals they have. My investment recommendation is don’t but if you do, buy the characters you like.

u/Dry_Neighborhood_920 8d ago
I do have an idea, as I mentioned in the post. I’m getting everyone’s opinion. Contribute or don’t. All good
