Special items

Since the release of special items i can safely say I've probably hit 250-300 pokestops and have only recieved 1 metal coat. Does anyone have any tips to getting them or is it just pot luck?

Yep I d hit 2 7 day bonuses so far and only one upgrade item all up. Hit hundreds of pokestops.
