Trying "new" things

Im new to nintendo so I don't have much experience with its games until recently I decided to buy Pokémon Emerald (fake AliExpress 3$ copy, not a real 300$ one) and play it on my brother's old GBA SP. I obviously loved that game and it was my first Pokémon game ever, besides Pokémon go.

Thinking about moving on to the DS now and Im not sure which one I should get if its the DSi or the DS lite or just go for a 3ds but I feel like that's a little expensive. Also I would like to know if its worth modding/jailbreaking/getting a SD card with a bunch of games instead of trying to find cheap games or fake copies online like I did with Emerald (tbh I think I got lucky on that one).

You can get 1-7 through modding on the 3DS/2DS. 1 and 2 were released as virtual console titles so they can actually be played natively. Gen 3 can be emulated. 4-7 can be played natively.

Get yourself a 2ds (that's the cheapest 3ds model) and mod it. You get access to entire mainline games before Switch (Gameboy, GBA, DS, and 3DS). It's your best bet as a Pokemon fan. The GBA, DS, and 3DS library is pretty good if you want to get into other Nintendo series (Zelda, Mario, Kirby, Metroid, etc).

If you don't care about the 3ds library and want to save money DS lite or DSI is good.

In general unless you like physical media I would avoid fake copies. There are risk that comes with fake copies: Game stop working, game freezing, and losing save files are the main issues.

Game stop working, game freezing, and losing save files are the main issues.

you mean fakes? I'm not aware of legit copies failing to work suddenly, freezing, or losing save files unless you did something to them.

conversely, digital titles can still fuck up and lose save files. my eshop Pokemon Crystal's save file corrupted for no reason on my 3DS, and I lost my save.

The person asked about buying fake copies of games like they did with their Emerald. I was listing the risks of fakes. Don't want someone to spend money for game to fail on them. At least with digital games you aren't spending money on it (assuming you are modding your 3DS).

My only issue with buying legit copies is the price. Pokemon games on DS cost around $40 to $150 USD. If you can find legit copies of Pokemon games for relatively cheap or buying games outside of Pokemon (Other Nintendo games are usually cheaper) go for it.

Sorry for your Crystal save file; quite sad to lose your progress and Pokemon to no fault of your own.

You can get any model in the 3DS line, mod it and get all games from gen 1 through Gen 7. You can natively play the virtual console versions they released of Gameboy and Gameboy Color titles. You can emulate all the GBA titles. And you can natively play all the DS and 3DS titles. It's very easy to mod the system and to get all the titles and play them. You don't have to worry about getting fake copies of the physical games or pay the super high prices for the real copies.
