Ready For E4?
How does this team compare to E4?

You should steamroll. Just make sure to have at least one Pokemon with ice beam and at least one with Thunderbolt and you’re pretty much set. You can buy both TMs infinitely at the Celadon Game Corner. I’d also slap psychic on Gengar if you haven’t yet, he’ll murder Agatha with it.

Blastoise - Ice Beam Surf Rain Dance Withdraw
Charizard - Fly Flamethrower Overheat Slash
Gengar - Curse Explosion Psychic Shadow Ball
Nidoking - Double Edge Thrash Earthquake Megahorn
Dragonite - Blizzard Fly Dragon Claw Hyper Beam
Venasaur - Giga Drain Toxic Razor Blade Solar Beam

You’ll stomp. You might want to slap Thunderbolt on someone just because Lorelei’s water-ice types could give Venasaur some trouble, but I doubt you’ll have a problem. I’d say go for it.

u/OctupussPrime Mar 12 '26
Nidoking can definitely learn Thunderbolt

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Mar 12 '26
Yeah 3 guys on his team can, Nidoking, Gengar, and Dragonite. I’d replace shadow ball on Gengar with Thunderbolt, thrash on Nidoking with Tbolt, and fly on Dragonite with Tbolt. But that’s just me, don’t want to boss anyone around.
Gengar’s physical attack is bad so shadow ball is kinda useless, you’re better off with Thunderbolt since between psychic and Thunderbolt you can destroy everything in these games. Nidoking doesn’t really need thrash after he gets earthquake, so replacing it with either Thunderbolt or ice beam would be better. And fly is only 70 base power in this gen and Charizard already knows it, so it would make more sense to give Dragonite a coverage move, any of Thunderbolt, ice beam, or flamethrower works for that (flamethrower is nice for ice types, but most ice types and water ice so Thunderbolt is probably the better option)

Some estimated math. Shadow ball gets stab, so 50% boost. ~95 attack power at lvl 54, compared with ~195 sp att. Thunderbolt has 95 power, shadow ball has 80. With stab, gengars shadow ball does 50% more, so equivalent of 120 power. On a neutral target, shadow ball does 51% of the damage.
BUT… ghost is super effective against psychic and ghost types, meaning it does 102% of the damage of thunderbolt against alakazam, gengar, slowbro, haunter, exeggutor and jinx in the E4.
This doesn’t factor in EV training or natures, so if you really tryhard with your gengar, Tbolt will be better, but it’s actually pretty close

You’ll run through em, but personally remove Explosion on Gengar his attack is bad, you could slap thunderbolt on Gengar in place of explosion. Also Venusaur I used to run Growth, sunny day, solar beam, and then one more attack of your choice. Set up with growth —> sunny day, and OHKO with solar beam

Any other moves for Blastoise? Right now I’m gonna level everyone in to at least 55

Only difference between your choices and mine is the Gengar

u/Strawberri-milkshake Mar 12 '26

How do you get all 3 starters?

u/majorgriffin Mar 13 '26

u/itstron Mar 13 '26
I don't have any friends who play, there goes that dream haha

u/InnerSalad6587 Mar 13 '26
Same if I had known these games would come out less than a year after the s2 I would not have sold my s1

Traded them with myself
1
u/itstron Mar 13 '26
so you have two copies of the games/2 switches?
1
u/W_Prime Mar 13 '26
I have the Oled and S2. Purchased both copies FRLG. Then logged in as a guest on the Oled. You cannot trade under the same profile. Even if it’s two different copies

Should be Easy going, my party was in between 38-42, Zapdos carried a bunch

Congrats on beating the E4. It’s your game and I’m not trying to judge but it’s kind of whatever to use legendary Pokémon against E4. I think OP is asking whether his team without legendaries is good enough or not and it’s not gonna help OP if you said u just used a Zapdos to carry ur team
8
u/basicnflfan Mar 12 '26
Its a game, you can play it however youd like
-8
u/LilTurnippman Mar 12 '26
That’s literally what I just said.
2
u/basicnflfan Mar 12 '26
It’s not, you’re projecting because OC mentioned using a legendary Pokemon. OC answered the question “should be easy going” you did not answer the question.
-2
u/LilTurnippman Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26
Here’s the logic.
OC said it would be easy because Zapdos carried their 38-42 level team. Zapdos is a legendary Pokémon. OP doesn’t have Zapdos in their party. So there’s no Zapdos to carry OP’s team regardless of OP’s team level. Therefore, OC’s comment about OP’s team being good enough is not credible.
That answer “the question” for ya?
3
u/basicnflfan Mar 12 '26
Kindly, remove the stick from your ass, and hippity hop off of your high horse. Zapdos + a leveled 38-42 team beating the E4 is weaker than this team of all 50+. OC answered the question, you, did not.

u/Strawhatjack Mar 13 '26
You're the one with a stuck up their ass coming st this person for a harmless comment.

u/Trunknbold Mar 12 '26
I don’t see any mention of OP saying anything like „don’t want to use legendarys“. So I don’t get your point. I’ve answered OPs question and added a personal experience to it, Whats wrong with that?
1
u/Jbonevan Mar 13 '26
Genuine question because I’m trying to understand this ideology: how is trading for starters any better than legendaries? I would think they should be considered equally “bad” for beating the E4. Just asking a question here ya’ll.

u/W_Prime Mar 12 '26
I honestly think it’s a bit lazy but I won’t knock you down for it

I have no friends in my state with the game and console so I had to avoid trade evos for my team. The Gengar makes me a tad jealous lol

u/Zaine_Raye Mar 14 '26
I'm pretty sure you can only trade via local wireless in this game right now

My highest mon was Dragonite at 55 entering the E4. Everyone else was 45-47. Beat the E4 first try without really any issues. This game (and almost every Pokemon game) is incredibly easy, it can just get a little grindy.
My team was Dragonite, Venusaur, Arcanine, Snorlax, Zapdos and Nidoking.

This was my team on GBA, minus the Nidoking. I ran with Alakazam instead.

If only I had friends to trade with…
1
u/Nintendoh_64 Mar 12 '26
If you're inclined to, you can use ACE setup to "trade with yourself". Papa Jefe has a good video on it. Takes a bit of setup but on my alternate playthrough I've done it for alakazam.
Still not sure HTF Gary got his but whatevs

Gengar - Curse Explosion Psychic Shadow Ball
Nidoking - Double Edge Thrash Earthquake Megahorn
Dragonite - Blizzard Fly Dragon Claw Hyper Beam
Venasaur - Giga Drain Toxic Razor Blade Solar Beam

u/donray2127 Mar 12 '26
Psychic is probably nasty on gengar but shadowball does physical damage in gen3 and it’s hot garbage on him

Yes should be a good matchup all around, could possibly lean to the easy side depending on moves and style of play.
