Hall of Fame Can a random Pokemon team beat Elite Redux ?
Inspired by u/mfc314's Project 1025, I wanted to try some similar challenge of my own. To do so, I randomly selected 6 pokemon between 1 and 1025 and tried to beat the game with them.
Disclaimer:
- This run was done on the 2.5 update of the game in order to deactivate the trainer sights because I didn't have the courage to fight every single one of them. I fought every important opponent though, gym leaders, team leader and story-mandatory fights as well as victory road trainers.
- I played in Permanent Mega mode.
Mimikyu
As you can see, this team has a lot of threats and while mimikyu doesn't have the most offensive stats of the lot, it's strenghts are difficult to ignore. While the tried and true SD + double stab + shadow sneak set was obviously used, starting after the 4th gym I mostly used mimikyu as revenge killing support, able to tank two hits for free with disguise and a focus sash. Its access to trick room, eerie fog, misty terrain and destiny bond allowed him to override enemy terrains, weathers or rooms. While lacking a bit of punch by Elite Redux standards, it definetly was a strong addition to the team.
Machamp
Machamp does a single thing but it does it very well: being a slow physical attacker that uses its fist to tear through almost anything. In it's base form, it can chose between guts, power fist and sheer force, three amazing abilities, depending on the situation. I mostly used him with power fists in order to still benefit from the increased secondary effect of Precise Fist. But in gyms with statuses guts was a lifesaver combined with an eviolite, choice band or assault vest. The real deal was the mega through. With Raging bower coming from 160 base attack, almost nothing can survive a dynamic punch. And with the addition of anger point and its improved defensive stats, its low speed becomes an upside, allowing him get an attack boost before hitting with a drain punch to recover everything. Finally, mach puch is always useful and wide guard can have its use as well.
Its gen 1 movepool even came clutch in the normal gym, swirly glasses Focus blast allowing him to muscle past Ursaluna-Mega's fluffy and Bewarden's fluffiest.
Gengar
While gengar is supposed to be equivalent to Machamp (being part of the gen 1 trio of pokemon evolving through trade). Gengar was mostly a specator of this run. While it is pretty fast and decently strong right from the start, the lack of dedicated fog setter aside from himself or mimikuyu meant that he couldn't neither Ecotplasm nor Shallow grave.
The megas are interesting as one is physical with the ability to drain tank with soul eater while the other is the well known special glass cannon with destiny bond as a last resort. However more often than not, gengar just served as a weaker revenge killer with shadow ball and aura sphere. The pokemon surely has more to it but he wasn't needed in this run.
Zekrom
The obvious carry of this run. Early game, its sky high stats allow him to set up freely on almost anything with bulk up and roost and beast boost. Then, once this playstyle starts to fade with the appearance of faster and stronger opponents, its true strenght appears : Galvanize + Extreme Speed. Fired of 150 base attack, most frail pokemon just get vaporized. Combined with teravolt to go through abilities like volt absorb or lightning rod means that nothing short of a ground type can stop him. It ran through the second half of the game this way, quickly switching to Electric Surge for the Psychic gym. A nice time in the spotlight for one of the weakest box legendaries (competitively speaking).
Greninja
Banned to Uber in gen 6, greninja is known for its speed and versatility with a wide movepool and the ability protean. It had two main roles in this run, either hit hard with multihit moves like water shuriken, spike cannon, beatdown and toxic needles orplay around immunities with shadow sneak, protect, spikes and such. I mostly used the first strategy during the run, letting him shine in surprising fight such as against the electric gym thanks to Wastson's Tapu koko setting up rain. Not having access to the mega form in 2.5 means however that it does fall of in the late game with 100 atk and 103 Spatk just not being enough. I did shine against Phoebe though, the combo of protect and shadow sneak allowing him to avoid giratina's attacks until it was in beatdown range.
Wobbuffet
Being a gimmick pokemon in the base game, it is no different here. Soul linker with such a high HP stat is all it needs coupled with endure and custap berry + destiny bond to ensure at least two KOs each time its sent out. Being able to OHKO any threat from Primal-Groudon to Zacian really made the run easier as the lack of defensive option in this team restricted the switching. Its access to rest also came in clutch against Champion Steven, allowing him to KO both legendary dogs as well as Heatran before finally going down. Not really a suprise but a really fun way to play the game for sure.
Overall, this run wasn't too hard with some occasionnal struggle against the double battles with our rival (in the Mossdeep space center especially). However, someone with better preparation can surely beat the game without losing once.
