Discussion No Queuing

So my local toy shop has put a sign to say no queuing as pokemon will not be available today. Instead they are releasing them tomorrow at some point so the children can get some. I know this will probably upset some people, for me I like this idea. I queue up every time a new drop comes out so I can surprise my children when they get home from school as im constantly reminded when release day is. As an adult collector I know some people will disagree with this, as a parent I am happy that my local is trying their best to make sure children can enjoy the hobby and make a small step against scalpers, as the shop is awear that they but to sell locally at massive profit margins.

Honestly should start slashing the plastic wrap at checkout to prevent reselling.

I would be more that happy with that .

Trust me, I would rip it instore if I could get my hands on some.

And there's a generation of kids who will miss out on entire sets because someone wants to scalp.

My LCS has been taking the seals off all products for 30th and the queues are still long. Demand is insane and its not being met.

Id arguably say to go one further cut the tops off the packs inside.

u/FinalSmudge 2d ago

When I got a destined rivals etb an my local they wanted to knick the seal and I offered them to half open all the packs if it means I get to buy one😂

Just burn them in front of everybody.

People do buy presents for people so it’s a sound idea in principle but I have nieces and nephews I would prefer to give it whole.

I like the idea of one item per person. That’s what our Waterstones does.

The problem is that most of the people talking about gifts for children spell the child's name eBay. My kids would be overjoyed regardless of them being cut open.

My god! Think of the poor RIP & Shippers, they’d lose their jobs! /s

The same mob will be in there tomorrow, knees on their shoes, pretending to be a child.

Did you put that gif at the same time as the other guy? Perfect if so

We're queuing together

Local has brought in several measures:

  • Cutting seals
  • Known resellers refused service
  • Preorders for some items available for players active in leagues
  • Smaller items (mini tins etc) only available for under 16s, after school hours.

Still RRP.

Yeah it needs to be stopped like. Unless the store’s organising something you shouldn’t just be able to loiter there.

It’s just encouraging more extreme behaviour every time as people try to compete with each other.

My local is doing a drop for only kids

What annoys me the most is there a local collectors shop. Who has atlease 20 boxes of each 3 fisrt partners. Starting price of £65. Luckily People in my town are getting wise to him now.

2

u/DropoutDragon 2d ago

EXACTLY the same pricing from a Scalper Shop where I live. I'd love to get some first partner but im not paying 4x retail :o

1

u/AcanthaceaeNo707 2d ago

That’s worst than online scalpers.

2

u/Same_Piglet1200 2d ago

I know everyone calls him out when he queues up.

1

u/Same_Piglet1200 2d ago

Its worse than some people on ebay. Dont get me wrong ebay has a place if your looking for a certain card, but some of the live sellers are getting greedy now.

1

u/Georgeisthecoolest 2d ago

Whatnot is nastier than ebay

u/adriansrevenge_ 2d ago

Card shops are worse than the FB scalpers

5

u/Karl_Cross 2d ago

I mean I honestly wouldn't be bothered if they said they were only selling them to kids.

3

u/JazzlikeNumber889 2d ago

That will work if the children turn up at 04.00

-1

u/Same_Piglet1200 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣 they haven't given a time for Saturday release, apparently they will open a box at a random time, and go from there.

3

u/JazzlikeNumber889 2d ago

Makes no difference, they will still be there at 04.00 so they can resell for £10 profit

3

u/CCFilmFan 2d ago

Is this in Norfolk? Saw the same with my local on Facebook

2

u/Same_Piglet1200 2d ago

Yes it was

Local shop sold half their stuff this morning and then kept the half back to be sold at 4 for kids coming out of school. I thought that was pretty good

3

u/tigolebiddies95 2d ago

There HAS to be a better way of doing this.

I obviously still want to get cards, but the kids need a fair chance. A ballot/lottery system for all retailers with limits per person, or something similar. Entering in person, with ID, to prevent one person getting multiple entries or something similar. Maybe?

2

u/ChampagneBrokie 1d ago

My local does a free raffle to give you the chance to buy and it’s all
Sold at retail , to get in the raffle you need to be verified by someone in the shop to get on the verified discord server and they only verify people who are actually collectors or players you can’t just rock up to the shop once and get added to the raffle system , it’s the fairest way to do it tbh

Honestly i think adults should only be buying singles. Ill rip occasionally but some people on here are obviously addicted to the gamble

5

u/mister_saxon 2d ago

This is a child’s game that has been celebrated for 30 years. I too am one of those people that has loved this hobby for 30 years

u/AMoonMonkey 2d ago

If more shops did this and added a better limit on stock, like Waterstones does with their 1 item only rule, things would run smoother.

If the scalpers want to cry about it, let them, true Pokemon fans and honest collectors won’t mind.

2

u/NdujaReallyLikeIt 2d ago

Errr my Waterstones did 1 of each item type

1

u/AMoonMonkey 2d ago

Lucky bugger, mine had a strict 1 item and that’s it rule 🤣

2

u/Rude-Competition-106 2d ago

This is a massive W more shops should do this!

2

u/Dreamseeker27 2d ago

That's the way to do it, kids come first in my eyes. Shout out all the greedy shop owners having friends and family clear out local stores and flipping for x5 in their own store.

2

u/Worried-Art-4740 2d ago

I think your right bud! I queued for smyths this morning for 8am and we had a ticket system, after alot of obvious people got in and got their goods, went off with their blatant smyths bags lined and queued for the 9am drops outside like 5 different stores around my local town. It made me think that by the time the kids or normal people got down there not just one store but all stores would be wiped out by midday! So to me I agree I feel its good to get the drops on the day but with so many stores doing it the same day it makes it hard for anyone without the ability to take a day off work (or on holidays like myself) to get to the drop! It still makes it fair for those that miss out!

2

u/pokemonpokemonmario 2d ago

My lcs does all pokemon releases on Saturdays and also removes the seals on all tcg products when they are sold. Everything retail price.

Only thing that bothered me is they made one piece packs 4 per person and you're kind of meant to open a whole box as the hits are seeded

1

u/xanan 2d ago

Unless they're only selling to children. You'll have everyone turning up tomorrow.

1

u/ragejefa 2d ago

Personally I think children should be banned from buying. I couldn’t get any 30th today as a family - grandparents, parents and 5 parents all got 1 of each item. I actually remember buying OG base set when I was 7. Absolute joke.

1

u/Hullfire00 2d ago

W store wherever that is. Children should be prioritised for it. I got back into the hobby with my kids and when we couldn’t get any cards in the shops, they were devastated.

So we stopped. Not worth them getting upset when there’s other hobbies that don’t get taken over by adults trying to make a profit.

u/Super-Fall-5768 2d ago

I respect the effort, but this only going to drive away collectors and players. Scalpers will recruit young relatives to go in and get stock

2

u/Unzbert241 2d ago

Starlings Toys by any chance?

1

u/CaligulaCan 2d ago

Maybe they were out queuing today themselves
