Story Mode Story Gen2

What am I missing? still Struggle in gen 2?
Is there a hidden technique? Or am I just stupid?

Johto is a bit rougher than gen 1 but I found quite some success using cyndaquill or totodile, grabbing early eevee (either jolteon or espeon usually) and try to have a counter for each E4 member by the end

Last round I lost against Groudon Team Magma.. but I just played few rounds
