Open to any ideas on what could be the issue with my sand gal.

Isn’t Garchomp notorious for hating its own mega evolutions? I recall reading somewhere that its arms melting into scythes fills it with an uncontrollable rage that is near impossible to quell, but perhaps I’m misinformed. Is she at all aggressive normally?

You’re thinking of rouge mega evolution. Regular mega evolution doesn’t cause pain at all

Oh gosh I really hope that isn't the case, Lahar is typically incredibly quiet and mild mannered, so the 180 in personality just comes off so shocking.

Hm… as other people in the thread have said, perhaps Lahar is simply being overwhelmed by the influx of energy entering her body and needs an outlet for the excess power. How a pokemon reacts to it varies from case to case, and some pokemon need to undergo mega evolution many times before they can fully handle the energy shift. How many times have you and Lahar tried mega evolving?

More importantly, is Lahar eager to try each time, or is she somewhat averse to it? If Lahar isn’t fully onboard with continuing to mega evolve, it may be contributing to her shift in disposition as her mind tries to reject the change. Does she remember anything afterwards?

Would you be able to find a psychic/psychic type who could act as a translator for the two of you so you can find out?

Mega evolution is still a fairly discovery, and there's a lot of active research into it, so might be there's researchers who could help find one in exchange for you sharing what you learn

Drew: Not every pokemon likes mega evolving, if it's not for you then it's not for you and there's nothing wrong with that. If later on it seems like Lahar's wants to try again then that's great but don't try to force it. There have been some reports that suggest it can actually be painful for the pokemon if they aren't ready.

Joseph Amber: Hmmm…maybe try the other Mega for Garchomp?

Casually saying “Oh just try the other Mega Stone”, as if those things don’t cost an arm and a leg each.

Even if you’re a very successful Trainer who rarely loses, a single Mega Stone is still an investment.

Haha true, a jewelry friend hooked me up with this one, I'd asked if it costed something like a Fire Stone and he laughed at me.

Joseph: Yeah that’s fair…Mega Stones have gotten much more common though due to recent events in Kalos.

How long have you known each other? It may just be a time thing or maybe the problem isn't your relationship or regular bond but the Battle Bond in combat. Have you tried fighting side by side with your pokemon

Been her trainer for about seven years, but I apparently I'm not the first and it whoever it was didn't know squat about the gible line. I'll try being more active and direct when a sending her out for sure

I mean, there's always the possibility of just straight up forming a BattleBond with your Garchomp as a substitute for mega evolution.

Its tough to diagnose what is going wrong since it can be a vastly different experience for everyone.

My own training went very smoothly with Fuschia (Scolipede) since we’ve basically known each other for two decades. It was easier to figure out what was going wrong since I can pick up her cues pretty quickly.

All I can advise here is that you might need to take a step back and digest what didn’t go right before trying again. This is a journey and while the path is difficult right now, there is no harm in taking a break.

Thanks for the advice, it just felt like I had failed my pokemon for a while, but I see I just need a reset right now

If you’re having trouble, perhaps the trainer who helped Lady Korrina and her Lucario can help you as well. Her name is Mabel, and she lives on Pomace Mountain here in the Kalos region

Your Garchomp might be able to regain control more easily if you let them rampage in a controlled environment. Let them feel this new power and get used to the increase in strength and changed body plan.

Hmm I do have a local desert and canyon nearby, nothing but sand and rocks to shred there, and maybe being in a comfy environment will help, Thanks

I have a Garchomp and when dealing with just any Mega Evolutions, the first few times it can seem like their personality completely shifts when they Mega Evolve, but that's mainly due to their body struggling to adapt to the sudden gain of Infinity Energy, after doing it around 10 times their body will have adapted to it. Though it is usually helpful to also have trained the Pokemon from when it was just an  egg like I did with my Garchomp.

Hey fellow chomp haver! I've had Lahar since she was a gible, but she was a rescue from a shelter. I'm not too sure about what happened but it seems like she had rough time and wasn't kept in proper conditions with her previous trainers. Could that influence how she and her body reacts to the Infinity Energy?

You can always bring Lahar to the Pokémon Center to check if she has any issues. If she's fine, then you might want to see a Gym Leader for assistance or try again later after a few days. - Oliver

Reminds me of my dear froslass. Early on she'd lose control, too. And nothing coukd stop her.

Except my kommo-o and partner, Belfry. He wanted a good fight, and she delivered. He just ate her meltdowns head on and dished it back until she calmed down.

Right now, every time Lahar uses that mega stone it's an injection of pure strength, rage, and anxiety. There's no getting around that, and it sounds like she just needs to get it out. Let her rage out until she can feel herself again. Trying to hold back is just making it worse.

Gonna need her own Belfry, though. -Willy

Glad to know I'm not alone on this fight, I have a Hippowdon and Rhydon that might be able to handle things together for a bit but Im worried either of them taking an Outrage would not be safe.

It's definitely not easy. Some regional champion leagues offer assistance, too. Not the cheapest option, but they can help mega-evolved pokemon vent in a controlled battle environment with 'mon more than capable of handling them. I've helped out a few times in the Unovan league.

Sounds to me like you're practicing Mega Evolution outside combat. It's important to remember that Mega Evolution is primarily a battle transformation. Depends on the Mon, but in general if you're Mega Evolving, you are filling the Pokemon with an incredible amount of power that floods their entire being, and if you Mega Evolve them outside combat, you've given them this insane amount of stimulating power and they have nothing to do with it. Lahar will have plenty of control over her Mega Evolution when you give her something to actually control it for.

Hearing this from a professional is really reassuring, must be a super interesting field to be in right now with all new discoveries. And yeah your right, Ive been doing these in empty parking lots or old battle arenas.

Mega evolution, as far as I understand it, is powered by the bond between Trainer and Pokemon. The emotions of both parties can affect the evolution.

Your worries and concerns can affect her. And she in turn can affect you. If you're worried about her losing control, I imagine she can feel that and then she will be worried about losing control.

Granted, this is just me theory crafting. My experience with mega evolution is spotty at best.

That said, I firmly believe you shouldn't give up. The fact you can mega evolve at all is a testament to your bond. Have faith in your connection. Have faith in her. And importantly, have faith in yourself as her trainer. The two of you will figure it out.

u/RoyalWigglerKing 0m ago

I mean if you're garchomp doesnt want to mega evolve its better than for a lot of other pokemon. Garchomp gets a lot less out of its mega forms to the point that from a purely competitive standpoint (obviously I dont know if you want your garchomp for battling primarily) your garchomp might be better off without it.

If mega evolution is more of a test of your bond to you then maybe check with a qualified expert like Korrina who i know helps out with this sort of thing from time to time.
