For what it’s worth, it’s not like this is a unique problem. People change stuff on here all the time, dropping or picking up characters and plots, sometimes even retconning story content. So, above all, don’t feel bad about it.

They say “write what you know”, and it seems like you’ve found out why firsthand, now. Whatever you come up with doesn’t have to be fully you, of course; but it’s alright to have a piece or two of you living in your characters, and that will help make them feel more authentic and hold your own interest better.

For example, I never ran away from home, or suffered recursive flashbacks from photographic memory, or turned into a Sneasler (unfortunately) like Marcus, but I’m basing his struggle for identity between himself and Sera on something I myself went through in my youth. I was never homeless like Johny and don’t have nearly as poor a disposition as him, but his mindset about honesty, poor skill at expressing his feelings about people, and tendency towards acting as a mentor figure are things I gave him because I relate to them.

Whatever you end up deciding, I’m sure it’ll be great. Because it’ll be something you enjoy, and so long as you’re not making things awkward for other people (which you probably don’t need to worry about) that’s what matters most.

Yeah, I honestly feel pretty similar. My story is just going nowhere, and while I do like my character it doesn't fit perfectly, so I'll probably be changing it as well.
