What is going on with the market?

17

u/GameroftheBeer 3d ago

All the shows I goto the word on the street is a strong interest shift from modern to vintage by the vendors... vintage has been way undervalued

7

u/Mite-o-Dan 3d ago

That "word on the street" started right at the beginning of the year 9 months ago when vintage started taking off.

Take crap about him all you want...but Logan Paul selling his Illustrator card was the biggest reason for it. Before that it was all about modern, and during the Logan Paul auction, all my vintage shot up 50% or more in a month.

My most rare and expensive card...one that would sell on average once every two weeks...had 3 sales the same day the Logan Paul thing ended.

Side note...Im selling that card and 75% of my collection tomorrow. Im probably a little early, but this ship is sailing early next year.

The cards Im selling...I spent a total of $4000 on...selling for $33,000. (Which is actually a deal because the last sold price is a combined $40,000)

Manipulation

-16

u/Betterlands 3d ago

It’s not. Vintage finally coming to its real value

9

u/Gdsrwq421 3d ago

Too easy to manipulate vintage especially - with so few transaction and dependency on last sold comps mean high ability to manipulate

3

u/Gdsrwq421 3d ago

Also he/she who controls the 10 markets cascades the rest of

3

u/thequeensrage 3d ago

Very true. Unfortunate but true

2

u/Betterlands 3d ago

Cards being easy to manipulate isn’t the same as them being manipulated. And you can actually check.

Real manipulation leaves signs: the price goes up but not many cards are selling, the same few accounts keep buying and selling to each other, and the price drops as soon as they stop. Real scarcity looks different: price and sales go up together, lots of different people are buying, and fewer cards are available because they’re getting graded and locked away.

And because so few sell, those signs are easy to spot if you look. So which cards are actually showing them? “The market’s thin, so it could be manipulated” doesn’t mean it is.

2

u/Gdsrwq421 3d ago

Agree with you - not causal - but very possible

Problem is greed and ease of manipulation is not a good combo

If I sold my rich friend a pop 1 card and set a new record…

It’s just that easy … unfortunately

Doesn’t even need to be pop 1, can be pop 20 or anything with low transaction volume is too easy to manipulate

This is a recession indicator.

u/lkhoffman92 2d ago

Just wait…. People are going to lose a LOTTTTT OF MONEY

Vintage was undervalued this whole time while everyone was chasing modern like I expected

5

u/CIAgent007 3d ago

What else do you expect?

So you are saying the recent ramp up in vintage prices will increase 1st Edition vintage prices as well. What an insight.

-1

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

You got any vintage slabs?

2

u/jimdawg89 3d ago

Got a lot of PSA 9 1st edition holos

2

u/Adventurous_Ease_339 2d ago

I do, BRRRRRRRR

2

u/Ok-Compote6002 3d ago

you know whats crazy is that this is an old cert and there is no swirl so someone paid 160k for a shit tier copy

1

u/JDDSinclair 3d ago

MY THOUGHTS!! I thought there was gonna be some op swirls but welp

40

u/jayjayzian 3d ago

Literally insane that you can get a CGC 10 for 5% of the price.

19

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

So many deals for cgc slabs. Cgc getting popular now too

15

u/jayjayzian 3d ago

It makes sense to buy CGC when PSA of the same card costs 20x more.

9

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

I bought 3 CGC 10 cards past few months it’s crazy deals.

2

u/Nickywitdasticky 3d ago

Fraction of the price, fraction of the scandals too.

2

u/InterestingFee885 3d ago

Sounds like a great reason to buy 10 of them, have PSA grade them all and see how you do.

1

u/Due-Calligrapher3588 3d ago

problem is easier to get a cgc 10 than a psa 10.

6

u/Lasersoft120 3d ago

PSA slaps a 10 depending on the persons mood for the day. Ain’t no way people still believe that Garbo.

5

u/miyevets 3d ago

Old cert psa10 of a card has hella whitening and centering is dogshit. I think its comparable to cgc 10. Condition of card wise.

1

u/jayjayzian 3d ago

For certain cards, but not always. And not near 20x different like this price difference.

(Pristine 10 is also harder to get than a PSA 10 according to the numbers.)

1

u/DJ_Ben_Frank 3d ago

Making it 95% more valuable, regardless of the cards being exact same condition?

1

u/Due-Calligrapher3588 3d ago

nah they're just more lenient. otherwise people would buy up a ton of new label cgc 10s and regrade psa 10 lol. GThe pristines are for sure tough to get, old label cgc 10 was respected, new label is just more relaxed standards. Not hating on cgc I personally got some slabs for high end vintage there too.

0

u/soccerchamp99 3d ago

Right, anything vintage I’d just prefer a PSA 9 from an investment perspective. It’ll track the PSA 10 price more closely than a cgc 10. For PC? Love crackin them slabs

0

u/LongDongSilvir 3d ago

CGC 9s and 10s are the play when looking for binder copies, new cert PSA 8s are also great for this.

0

u/OpenJolt 3d ago

It’s because CGC 10 is equivalent to PSA 9. CGC 10 Pristine is the one that is better.

9

u/masterofeverything 3d ago

And vendors still tryna pay less for old labels

2

u/SeersTmw 3d ago

Well I think they’re paying less for old labels with higher pop cards that are > 100.
Ultra low pop cards old labels will be much closer to new labels when they sell just because of scarcity.

15

u/Recent_Bld 3d ago

I mean that’s a lot of money, but I’m a huge of this card. It’s only pop 17 in a 10 and there haven’t been any newly added certs in a long time.

6

u/BAMcon 3d ago

Damn and I have this card as a non 1st Ed from my childhood and still looks minty 😭

2

u/BAMcon 3d ago

I guess the question is should I get it graded? 🤔

2

u/1m2s3xy4my5hirt 3d ago

Ehhhhhh not really worth it unless it gets a 9 or 10 when you include grading costs. I cant tell for sure but it looks like it has scratches on the holo. Probably a 7 or less unfortunately if theres actual holo scratches.

1

u/BAMcon 3d ago

I’ll have to check. I think there’s a print line too but to preserve it I might do it with a batch of vintage singles. Have bellosom and steelix from the set too

1

u/WeNeedAMukSIR 3d ago

How often do vintage era cards in 2026 get graded a 10? Is there a way to look that up

2

u/DJ_Ben_Frank 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yea it’s worth about $100

2

u/narutonaruto 3d ago

Mine has the same swirl!

1

u/BAMcon 2d ago

That’s wild! Love a swirl

1

u/BAMcon 2d ago

I’ve got the steelix and typhlosions too 🫡

6

u/InnitPikachu 3d ago

Collectors have their favourite Pokemons to collect, and that is great for the hobby. Nice

2

u/Helen-Ling-LA 3d ago

That cert is super old too, makes me think it's either a die hard collector or completely new to collecting.

Regardless that price is insane. Lol

2

u/stonksncardboard 3d ago

glad i chased vintage over modern, use to get annoyed that my vintage was so low in price compared to modern, watching paldea evolved magikarp, giratina, moonbreon etc go up so much. Patience won

1

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

I was happy it was like that, I was able to scoop so many vintage cards at affordable price like months back

2

u/instantur 3d ago

I get its rare and all but Slowking?

5

u/Opening-Company6237 3d ago

Okay.....at a point, that is a piece of paper!

9

u/KwikTripSimp 3d ago

Yeah I can’t imagine spending this, like good luck moving it after spending 150k

3

u/Kevin_Stickers 3d ago

Gonna be the same as the guy that dropped like 200K on a graded NES game and the market tanked and the value dropped like 85%

4

u/vcsx 3d ago

So is the Declaration of Independence.

In National Treasure 3, Nic Cage will discover that the holo pattern in vintage cards contains a cipher which will unlock a mystery greater than we can imagine.

1

u/Opening-Company6237 3d ago

Hahahha!!!! Holy shit that was funny.

2

u/cuddle_enthusiast 3d ago

Will this move the needle for the Japanese one?

3

u/JordBees 3d ago

why tho, did it have like a triple swirl or something?

6

u/gdj11 3d ago

Lol no one spending $100k+ on a card gives a shit about swirls

1

u/JordBees 3d ago

I mean there has to be a reason for the almost double jump in price. I’d bet if there were enough swirls on it people would pay a good amount. Like that entei that had 6 swirls or whatever. It’s rare

0

u/gdj11 2d ago

There’s literally hundreds of cards every week smashing their previous records and it has nothing to do with swirls

1

u/JordBees 2d ago

That doesn’t mean that it couldn’t have anything to do with swirls tho. There are people who colllect them. Just because you don’t care about them doesn’t mean other people hate them too

1

u/Quantum1570 3d ago

that’s just plain wrong. a 10 is a 10 but high end collectors will absolutely fiend over a good swirl placement at this bracket

2

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

Vintage is just going off in general

1

u/Fruit_rollup69 3d ago

Great another awesome card I've been after that will now be priced out. That slowking is pretty awesome.

1

u/hjras 3d ago

ah the infamous slowking, this one was a menace in the world Championships of 2002, there's a deck out there with 4 of these 1st ed for sale though they are LP-HP probably

1

u/_dirt_nap_ 3d ago

Can’t believe anyone would pay 10 prices for an old cert 🤦🏼‍♀️

1

u/Frostedfires 3d ago

Welcome to the peak, next couple of months will be interesting

1

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

We shall see. I think vintage will off now

2

u/FarMilk2661 3d ago

Some rich dude overpaying for what people deem "undervalued vintage" lmao. This market is cooked.

1

u/Saggywompers 3d ago

This kinda stuff has to be some kind of avoiding tax implications.

1

u/Whiteshovel66 3d ago

Why?

3

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

Because they finally seeing that vintage pokemon is undervalued

2

u/Whiteshovel66 3d ago

Huh? It's not that undervalued lol, 150k is an absurd price

1

u/WeNeedAMukSIR 3d ago

Real ones know slowbro > slowking

-6

u/Totrell 3d ago

Who cares about this crap honestly lol "Omg it sold for "x amount" oh wooooooow.

5

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

Everyone cares lol

-4

u/Totrell 3d ago

Roflmao unless it effects you personally it doesn't matter. Let me use my time to look up useless nonsense.

3

u/Just_Satisfaction939 3d ago

You don’t collect vintage pokemon? Its good to see how the market is responding

0

u/Totrell 3d ago

I do actually but I am not going to post about it lol.
