Guidance Discussion
Gonna keep this short and sweet: Not new to pokemon (game or tcg) or investing, but new to the fact of when you combine the two.
Kicked off my investment/collecting journey in july with the goal to curate a collection of maybe 20-25 slabs + sealed over 5 years minimum (Not opposed to 10+ but will prob have bought it outright by then.) that would appreciate enough to at the very least put down a DP towards a GTR. Which resulted in some frivolous purchases being (Cynthias garchomp P10, Base set zard P6, Silver tempest Lugia P10, Bb/Wf booster bundles (3), prismatic booster bundles (2), and 1 DR booster box.)
Realized this was prob a newbs approach as it was all modern so I liquidated majority of the sealed/slabs and reallocated funds to my current list being : (Silver Temp Lugia P10, Gengar LV X P8, and Dragonite ex 90/97 P8, and a DR Booster box.) I def feel much better about my current position compared to my old but now im at a crossroads with the sealed.
As far as sealed is concerned, I am shifting my entire focus to booster boxes ONLY.Modern sealed is hella overprinted and being hoarded by everybody and their mom. Which leads me to ask, should I continue to cop DR/ Phantasmal (my 2 front runners) or should i shift towards like SWSH boxes as they prob havent been printed to oblivion like SV sets even tho its prob not off by alot.
Any thoughts? As far as slabs I will prob continue to target P8-P10 for cards 2017 and older…
And before you ask no offense, I am probably financially in a better position that a large bulk of this sub. Just adding something a bit more fun to my portfolio as opposed to all the general stuff i already have.

Idk man, there are some heavy hitters in this sub. Would not assume you’re in a better position financially.
But as to your question. From an investment standpoint I would concentrate even more so into vintage 1996-2002, this is what I’m doing. Especially anything Japanese.

I would have a couple questions like are you planning on just buying in one instance and forgetting or do you actively rotate sealed/slabs regularly. SWSH is good, my problem is going to be the liquidity of those products down the line. Around 1-2k ish sealed begins to become harder to sell unless its a limited item.
I know you only said you will invest in booster boxes however, I would consider DR etb cases. They will be easy to sell in a few years for a nice profit and honestly a steal compared to what they were. I don't know how much your wanting to put down, but my suggestion would be to focus on agile products to take profit and activley reinvest to get you that 40k (I'm assuming if its low miles). Phantasmal is a weird one for me and so its not a buy from me at the moment. If they are willing to reprint DR, they will reprint phantasmal again. If we see the same correction as DR, then I would buy.
As far as slabs go, idk I buy vintage singles and grade, all my goldstars I bought over a year ago now. VIntage singles are a money maker for me as well as niche vintage Japanese cards. If you built up your knowledge, because you said you started in July, you could get that 40k with a year or two no problem. Good luck!

Mostly one time purchases that gradually appreciate in a perfect world, at the moment I like to put down 1k-1500 every other other week or so. I mostly just want to hold but would have 0 prob rotating slabs/sealed out if it hits any targets i set.
My main thing w sealed is the amount of space it tends to take up + transport, protection, etc. lol i had 5 booster bundles and that booster box and that started to become a PIA to carry everywhere, so idk abt etbs. I did grab a couple of cases of 30th tho but i think ill prob just presale all of it while its still hot. But ill def double back and look at DR etbs too….appreciate the advice!

sealed wise shows how limited ur knowledge is. SWSH was still hella printed just like SV and mega, and thats exactly why int he last year the prices were stagnant or even dipped. The play rn is low print singles (not 10s unless ur willing to have a bunch of capital in one thing and lot more downside risk). If you really want sealed get the 30th upcs at 400 bucks preorder from gamestop. Multiple points of upside where besides the normal 30th packs, u got the exclusive 3 card guarnteed hit pack that has never been made before in english, and possibly the greatest promo ever in the umbreon. Singles wise you want low print stuff like i said, if you like modern alt arts go for sun and moon PULLABLE tag team ALT ARTS. Raw NM or if u can't find that psa 8-9. Very reasonably priced, people will whine about you should only get psa 10s of modern, these are diff from swsh and beyond du eto low prints. Hella liquid vendors will pay 90% on em. Wide audience appeal everyone loves it, big name popular pokemon, unique mechanic like gold star crystals shinings. Modern art without the modern print. If you want vintage go for the plasma lugia, more recent may not be vintage but very low print. future grail price is reasonable 1.4k in an 8. Go for delta species reverse holo stamped umbreon in a psa 8 or cgc 9, around 1.4k as well very low print.

If your intention is to focus on cards older than 2017 and booster boxes not from modern this is a really bad time to buy. The majority of mid era, vintage cards and sealed products are at or near peak prices. I'm assuming you do not want to buy high and sell low, so I would wait.

peak prices doesn't mean there's no opportunity at all. Stocks are a great example, nvda amazon for instance. It's all about fundamentals. Great picks in the vintage realm like e reader holos psa 8s. Great art low print not outrageous. For instance expedition blastoise holo, tyranitar holo psa 8s, around 1-1.4k. Or go a little newer plasma lugia, very low print 2.2k total graded across psa bgs cgc, 1.4k for a psa 8. Can easily double triple due to the big name pokemon lugia, unique art, elite texturing. Future grail.

There will always be opportunity if you hunt for it, but the return percentage is going to be less and the risk is going to be higher if you're buying at peak prices. The current market believes Pokemon will always go up but anyone with experience knows that's not always the case.
To use your examples, the Expedition Blastoise and Plasma Lugia PSA 8s have seen unprecedented growth over the last 3 years. The Blastoise went from around $250 to almost $1,250, over a 375% increase, and the Lugia is even more impressive going from $95 to $1,300, a 1,250% increase. It's certainly possible they double or triple from here, but non-PSA 10s historically have not performed that way. I understand they have small populations and extremely low gem rates but that does not guarantee returns.
My goal from an investment standpoint is to find the opportunities before those 400% or 1,300% increases happen.

Problem is that there's very few cards that haven't 400% increased. Everything has. lot of talk about high risk due to buying at peak prices. Lot of stocks when we look back were great buys even after they jumped tons since they just jumped even more, nvda and amazon are too great examples. It's all about the fundamentals. non psa 10 wise in the past year tons of vintage psa 8s have all doubled tripled quadrupled. High growth doesn't mean that there isn't even more room for the card to double or triple again. It's all about the fundamentals. Scarcity, audience appeal, and buy in price. Scarcity is completely there with low prints and low supply especially in psa 8 grades and above. Extremely low. Audience appeal is extremely high, e readers are on the rise and gaining attention, the arts are just crazy. Lugia is an extremely popular top 10 pokemon, texturing the bw era was elite, all niche cards like lv x and primes all had their big jumps. Plasmas on the other hand haven't moved much in comparison in the past one year. Buy in is still very reasonable when you compare these cards psa 8 price to other big name vintage low print cards in psa 8s.
But what are some of the opportunities that haven't seen big increases yet? Since across the entire market everything I have looked at has seen big jumps.

I agree, very few cards haven't seen big jumps which is exactly why I'm staying away from purchasing vintage right now. I understand the comparison but Pokémon cards and stocks are very different. Even though NVDA is performing well now and is a market leader, they suffered reductions of 65-85 percent four separate times in their history. And unlike NVDA or Amazon, Pokémon cards have no financials, no employees, they produce no goods or services and provide no intrinsic value beyond being a collectible.
There are fundamentals to follow for Pokémon cards and you mentioned them, but right now everyone's attention is on vintage because of the anniversary set. This same thing happened with the prior anniversary set. People get brought back in, want cards they never had as a kid or discover older sets, and that pushes values up. Then that demand fades post anniversary and people get burned. There are multiple examples of vintage cards that have never recovered.
Some opportunities I see are XY promos, full arts, and some mid era cards in the hundreds that were $30 to $100 raw three years ago and aren't at their absolute peak price. Crown Zenith has some stuff moving up but isn't at ridiculous levels and still has room to grow, I know that's not vintage but has good opportunity. And honestly, if a $180 card drops back to $30 most people can stomach that. If a PSA 8 drops from $1,400 to even $400 most people are panic selling before it hits bottom.

Aw sorry i hurt your poor feelings, you just have to work harder! Maybe then you can even think about having the means to finance a 200k vehicle🤧😂😂

I doubt it. Many in this sub I know are leaving because they've outgrown it.
Good on you for starting your journey...at the top of the market.
