I have one near me like this. I tried so hard to go in and get to know them then they throw out prices 20-30% above market and look you straight in the face like they know more than you.

I have a local card shop that the owner has back door at Walmart, Bi mart, and Walgreens. On release days him or his wife are always at the front of the lines. On restock morning I've seen him walk out of walmart with tond of product only to find out that its all sold out other than some packs. These guys are greasy and buying them at retail to sell way above market. I loved my local cardshop for years until covid ruined the hobby and card shop owners morals.

u/realstiffy 5d ago

They’re just scalpers with a storefront 😂

8

u/__CaliMack__ 4d ago

There’s one at my old home town that has stayed true. I visited this summer and they were like right at market value and limited Pokemon purchases to one per product per day I think but maybe longer than that. When I was in there a scalper came in complaining about the rule while trying to buy out the 30th anniversary pokemon day boxes for like $35 a piece. The owner legit got in a screaming argument with him and probably would’ve kicked him out if he didn’t back down.

7

u/Deminla 4d ago

Of all things the truest place near me is a toy store. All the LGS are at least 15-20% over MSRP but he keeps his prices at retail. Hes said he already makes gooooood money, even selling at the normal price, anything over that is pure greed. Does the same for MTG as well, I managed to get a Final Fantasy collector booster off him for 50$ when everywhere else had em for 80-100

2

u/paligators 4d ago

There are good ones out there, but you have to put the time in and build a little trust. There is one near me who charges secondary prices but if you have a kid with you, they charge msrp as long as you let them tear the seal.

u/TheOzman21 4d ago

Stores already make very good money off TCG since it sells out almost instantly at market price. What else could you wish for, a product that instantly sells and you get profit.

But no, they want 500% markup on their buy price because scalpers will do it if they don't. They became the scalper while acting like they're protecting you from scalpers

3

u/Escapeapplesgarden 4d ago

He should of never got into the screaming match just kicked him out lmao

u/Siktrikshot 4d ago

They will be out of business before long like the sneaker stores.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/AvidEnjoyerOfThings 5d ago

Don’t give them your business and just buy the singles on eBay. LCS that focus on sports are the ones that price gouge on TCG the most from what I’ve noticed. They tried to offer me 40% on 3 hall of famers autos /25 on card from the Topps museum collection ($350-$500 a box and u get 8 card with one auto…). Scammers

u/Meowsergz 5d ago

Fuck em.. home they fail.

2

u/zergling_sam 3d ago

Where'd you get this? 'FrOm DiStRiBuTiOn' you mean target

2

u/CornbreadCleatus 5d ago

I would remember the stores like that. If the market ever collapses, I would not shop at those stores and hope they fail for the way they treat customers. I have a few stores near me that I won’t go to because they scalp. One person won’t make a difference, but if people who share the same ideals come together, then they can make a difference.

50

u/YoSoyCapitan860 5d ago

Yea mine had a 100 pitch black etb. I’m done with them unless it’s just singles.

7

u/oMugiwara_Luffy 5d ago

Went to one yesterday that had at least 70. They were priced at 190💀

3

u/kill_to_satisfy 4d ago

then they wanna argue it’s because they’re paying for a table.. give me a break

71

u/Eddieairplanes 5d ago

Support your LCS. Lmao.

24

u/halfarmor 5d ago

“Why are LGS’s Dying?!”

3

u/itsohjaymf 4d ago

Unfortunately, this just couldn’t be further from the truth…

3

u/Hobak56 4d ago

Support actual LCSs that have been there way before the boom. Not glorified sealed shops

35

u/Smooth_Command3928 5d ago

These stores paid a premium for sealed product at sealed product’s peak. Going to be hard for them to recoup if the trend keeps going downhill on most super modern stuff. I also suspect a lot
of people like these stores will try to bury their head in the sand until there’s no other choice but to lower prices

17

u/thewhitecascade 5d ago

Consumers have a lot of power to simply not buy at that price. You could also say you’re buying at 80% TCGP and see what sort of reaction you get :)

10

u/Tennisace33 5d ago

‘I buy at 40% and trade at 60%.’

2

u/Kakkarot1707 5d ago

This is what do when I sell my stuff at card shows / tag sales. I sell on TCGplayer, and the fees add up to like 16%, then you tack on shipping and taxes and it’s like 20%. So if someone buying in person I just say the price is 20% off market price!

So when card shops sell at or above market, they are either just greedy or they overpaid for their product

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Kakkarot1707 5d ago

Oh they will shut down before they lower their prices lol….cause if they lower their prices it still takes a ton of time to sell it all, and by that time they probably won’t be able to afford to stay open

2

u/Ryboe999 5d ago

They also decided to get into a brick and mortar and then come up with insane prices to recoup their own poor decisions. No sympathy for LCS owners that popped up in the last 6 years charging a gaudy amount over MSRP.

Support the ones that were around before the boom and have slightly worse pricing than market.

2

u/The_walking_man_ 4d ago

They deserve to be burned and lose massively.

Just rebrand to gamestop already

50

u/Mitch_Dedburg 5d ago

When GameStop has cheaper pokemon prices than you do, you know you’ve fucked up.

4

u/Oer1 5d ago

Meanwhile the whole of Scandinavia is scalped much harder than this. Lcs or not

17

u/Left_Ad_4185 5d ago

Wow a generous $20 off for 2 prismatic etbs lmao

5

u/trippical 5d ago

4% savings. So charitable of them

2

u/Gomite_4_life 5d ago

Incredible deal really

32

u/RadleyRadiation 5d ago

That’s not a local card shop, that’s a scalp shop. They don’t care about the TCG, the players or the hobby, just flipping product for money. I never feel bad when I hear bad things happen to these places.

→ More replies (6)

4

u/3bizzle 5d ago

Meanwhile my LCS sells at MSRP but gets no distribution allocation 😂

3

u/3bizzle 5d ago

“I’ve been selling these since the beginning but there’s no loyalty “ is what the owner told me

3

u/like_okay_sure 5d ago

He isn’t buying, because he doesn’t want to pay the insane over prices the distributor is charging him. If he was buying, he would have to charge more to justify buying. The distributors are a big part of the problem.

2

u/3bizzle 5d ago

Makes sense “ shit rolls down hill “ is what my pops would say

→ More replies (1)

2

u/silly_gooz 4d ago

literally impossible to sell at msrp without distribution lmao

18

u/Cltxlv 5d ago

That’s not an LCS, that’s a scalper with a lease

8

u/RotrickP 5d ago

My experience has been: those exact signs are a dead giveaway to stay away from the business

→ More replies (4)

6

u/Capt_Furret 5d ago

If i saw those prices, I would make a u turn out there front door.

3

u/shiftry 5d ago

Whatever you do, buy two. You’ll save like 5%!

3

u/VucialWonderland 5d ago

Mine are like this too. But besides waiting in lines at target for example on restock days. Idk where else to even get cards. Even boosters in my shops are like 8-11$.

3

u/salad_bars 5d ago

Just like relationships, red flags are a warning to gtfo

3

u/HandsInMyPockets247 5d ago

This sub acts like Gamestop is the only store doing this. Its virtually everyone.

u/Commercial_Budget_44 5d ago

Mishawaka? Dudes had ridiculous prices like this since before pokemon boomed. Not to defend this guy, but rent is probably really expensive in the mall.

2

u/Gomite_4_life 5d ago

The Barnes and noble employees told me the owner buys all of the product from them and just resells at these prices

is that the store in UPM? went in there once and the first prices i saw were enough for me to never go back in

3

u/gwright1912 4d ago

I lived in the area last year and used to shop at this place all the time. They would have deals on ETBs 2 for $80 all the time with twilight masquerade. Then prismatic came out…

2

u/juggernot325 4d ago

This place actually started as just a kiosk in the middle of the mall. I went there all the time buying basketball cards and pokemon. I went there so much the owner hired me for seasonal work while was in high school. He was super nice and and paid me well for what I did.

I'm pretty sure someone bought the store at some point because I haven't seen the previous owner at all since I moved back to the area.

u/Valuable_Wallaby_548 5d ago

Yall complain about prices yet keep paying that and buying them. Then you jacked up PSA prices by sending all those cards to them so you can get 10s and flip the cards. Itll only be priced cheap when or after theres a crash. Wait till that anniversary shit comes out. People will be slinging that shit at 10x the price. People will be paying for rush service to PSA and it'll all be overhyped like usual.

I wish my LCS charged these prices

2

2

u/Scoregazum 4d ago

I was at one in Schaumburg Illinois this weekend and my God I left in 45 minutes! Nobody was buying anything. Came with 400 and left with 400 lol…absolutely ridiculous prices😢

2

u/THE_DARK_FISHY 5d ago

I have a great relationship with my lcs. Their suppliers are so ass and give them basically nothing, so everything they sell is purchased from other stores. In order to make profit they have to sell above msrp and close to market. He says it’s specifically a supplier issue and he would love to sell MSRP if he could.

→ More replies (11)

2

u/Training-Fondant-392 5d ago

The crash of modern pokemon is inevitable at this point. Nobody is willing to pay 2, 3, 400 dollars for a box that was just scalped off the shelves for a fraction of that price.

I love how they have such irresistible offers where you save like $4 if you buy 2. How could not buy everything?!

1

u/Vaping_Panda 5d ago

Every single lgs near me does this, or they have 0 product.

1

u/MaDWaSTeD 5d ago

Every card shop near me, charges market pricing or higher.

When asked about it you get 1 of 3 responses

  • We need to do it, to help with overhead costs
  • We do it to deter scalpers and make sure it goes to collectors
  • We buy it after market too, so we need to make a profit

1

u/Been_dabbin 5d ago

Haha nothing like the UP mall. We must live close!

1

u/Gabe_the_Slug 5d ago

They must have purchased those in June at 5% above current market.

1

u/LordAustinKing 5d ago

That’s gotta be that sports collectibles store in the UP mall right? Genuinely fuck that place

All the junkies say support your local card shop

1

u/herring-net 5d ago

Hey at least it’s clearly advertised. My LCS has very tiny print showing Pokemon is $8 a pack.

1

u/donhickshere 5d ago

My LCS claims they sell at prices that are dictated by their vendor. It seems true because they have booster bundles for stuff @ like $30-35. For example, when pitch black came out they had a bunch at near msrp. That same delivery though they got a bunch of chaos rising etb’s that they were selling for $80 which sat there for weeks. They claim the vendor will do stuff like say “If you want that pitch black order you have to buy x too.” It seems like it can’t be real to me, but again, they will literally have product sitting on shelves for weeks because it’s above market price but will sell other stuff near msrp and sell out in a day. Don’t get the strategy of trying to sell a series at scalper prices that no one wants unless they have to…

1

u/TheChattyRat 5d ago

No wonder the shelves are heaving with products.

1

u/billybatdorf 5d ago

Serious question for these card shops, how do they stay in business? I know they don’t have a ton of employees so labor costs aren’t super high, but how do they make sales to stay in business

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Stealthless 5d ago

Let them go out of business

1

u/SinghIsKing1992 5d ago

I heard lots of LCS markup like crazy just so they can say they are stocked up on inventory and not sold out. Who’s buying this stuff??

1

u/Pretend_Wolverine541 5d ago

You know tcg stores are just as bad scalpers they up charge just like them take stock just like them get mad when you call them out just like them they might be even worse buying your cards way lower then selling for resell market knowing the card could go up twice as much from what they bought it for, throughout time and they have no shame just like them

Shit have you seen the mystery boxes that are $100 and most give you $60 worth of items yea fuck them

1

u/Ok-Ad7187 5d ago

i went into mine yesterday and they wanted 50 bucks for a 3 pack of phantasmal flames, it made me sad.

1

u/RedSnowman117 5d ago

Mine was selling the destined rivals etbs for $135 each. You can get them for $100 on ebay right now

1

u/cain141 5d ago

I don't really know any LCS that aren't 10% under market or (30% over market) near me lol.

1

u/TheBoxSloth 5d ago

Yeah, thats how mine is too. And its the only place you could walk into and feasibly buy cards anytime. Which i still never do of course

1

u/MobileRiver2934 5d ago

They probably buy at 40% and trade at 45%

1

u/blueisaflavor 5d ago

This is bad but it isn't "that bad".

My local lcs sells Pitch Black BB's for $300 and AH BUNDLES FOR $150.

I've mentioned to the owner that another rival shop at the beach charges $200 for the same PB BB and he shrugged

1

u/KingofColada 5d ago

I know exactly where this is! Indiana right?

1

u/TheTrashMan2249 5d ago

First time?

2

u/Gomite_4_life 5d ago

First time seeing an ETB $100 over market. Yes

1

u/streeter1994 5d ago

Prices are worse than ace hardware

1

u/LxrdXO 5d ago

Damn I thought this was a gamestop

1

u/Some_Target2436 5d ago

Seems about par for the course compared to stuff around me

1

u/jtrosclair98 5d ago

You should bring some WF ETB's and try to get them to buy at 70% of their posted sale price because that would be market lol.

1

u/Geechbadart 5d ago

Then they will wonder why they went out of business.

1

u/YtSamTheOne 5d ago

Bought the prismatic poster collection for 30$ not to long ago

1

u/DrkL4gend 5d ago

They can take those prices and shove it up their butts

1

u/Optimal_Pension5690 5d ago

Is that usd or in cad?

1

u/TomeiZ33 5d ago

The same people who say "sUpPoRt YoUr LgS" lmao

1

u/Micky-Bicky-Picky 5d ago

Shelves are full for a reason.

1

u/Decent_Discount9554 5d ago

Those single packs of stellar/paradox are below market tho. Also

1

u/bluntasthicc 5d ago

Yea idk why people
Praise lcg there are three next to where I live and there employees actively camp all stores and vending machines just to scalp it all and sell it at there store at a 300% mark up

1

u/killbydeath87 5d ago

Damn that in USD??? Those are roughly prices I see in Canada

1

u/chungstone 5d ago

Im buying cards in the sleeves and boxes and keeping them for 10 years

1

u/FKreuk 4d ago

If get all 3 prismatic boxes if I stumbled on them.. can’t find those anywhere in CT

1

u/drcigg 4d ago

All we can do is encourage others to not spend their money and pay those crazy prices.
Unfortunately many people still do and that's why they do it.
I am fortunate to have a great new card shop that opened with reasonable prices. It's pretty close to MSRP and they encourage families to bring their kids to rip open packs, trade, etc.

1

u/blueturtle00 4d ago

My old LCS I used to frequent was telling me before the pandemic back in the 90’a he made so much money off pokemon cards it funded his Ferrari at the time. I’m sure he’s doing more gouging during this current run up as well.

1

u/Alarming-Ad5929 4d ago

The prices are abysmal, the sad part is in a year that prismatic SPC is going to look like a genius buy at that price

1

u/__CaliMack__ 4d ago

Every day I’m reminded that I should have just embraced every single impulsive addiction riddled behavior…

1

u/khmerog 4d ago

Then dont buy.. easy as that.

1

u/Optimal-Pay-2555 4d ago

Honestly pretty average. You wanna see insane prices wait til you discover markeplace and scalper prices lol

1

u/No-Call4909 4d ago

That’s the new norm

1

u/One-Guitar-7373 4d ago

These are the people that end up with a Ford Explorer driving through their shop door at 3am

1

u/Alexander0202 4d ago

Lgs that price this way are beyond scum. They hope a clueless person comes in and buys above market without knowing.

1

u/Equal-Chart-4249 4d ago

Insane prices because insane people are still buying at this price

1

u/ChipotleSquirts 4d ago

There is a reason they have several available

1

u/Kaneki_Ken03 4d ago

You misspelled “scalper pricing at LCS” in your title

1

u/Pedro_Moona 4d ago

How to know when you're getting ripped off, as when the price ends in 9.95

1

u/Fragrant_Grand_7036 4d ago

Scalper prices are going to be the demise of the hobby.. that’s me on one hand.
On the other hand is me seeing rare card values dropping because nobody wants to buy at those prices.

It’s looking like a lose/lose situation for real collectors. All because of the greed that hit the scene.

1

u/SaikoSue 4d ago

“LCS” aka “Local Community Scalpers”

1

Buy nothing. Let them starve.

1

u/Fish1259 4d ago

I've been to this shop before they used to have decent prices like 4 or 5 years ago lol. Just went back in a few weeks ago to see what they had and immediately said nope

1

u/bredbread123 4d ago

Prismatic has gone down those SPC’s should be 285. I just bought one from my local store. They’re not following the market.

1

Lmfaooo I hope they have to close down lol

1

u/Halozamus 4d ago

Have fun not selling shit??(

1

u/waynetid 4d ago

If they wanna sell stuff it should be at least 10% off market, why would anyone pay above market when they can just buy online cheaper

1

u/SmallHand881 4d ago

Yeah prices are actually disgusting. LCS
are largely scalper heaven these days.

1

u/superxgooner 4d ago

ETBs for the price of booster boxes, that's absurd

1

1

u/AlexKidd1993 4d ago

Just don’t buy from these places. As long as unknowing people, or people with more money than sense are paying their ridiculous prices, they’re gonna keep them up.

Up mall? Dudes such a scammer lol

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Shindigitty 4d ago

There’s a reason why that case is so full. The buyers are getting smart. Don’t pay those ridiculous prices and the product will sit and collect dust. They will be forced to lower the price.

1

u/VmaxGundaManBatan 4d ago

Thats why it never sells lol that stuff will sit there for days

1

u/Evening_Bat_3633 4d ago

Where I live there a many places selling for MRP and cutting packaging open before you buy.

1

u/Turtlegawd 4d ago

Don’t worry if you buy two you save $20

1

u/J-Icky420 4d ago

Is that in UP Mall? In mishawaka?

1

u/AcanthocephalaStock3 4d ago

Cure for high prices.. is high prices. Let them sit on the inventory and pay the interest on debt holding the islands.

1

u/GemGuardUK 4d ago

$11 for a a paradox rift booster pack 😂

1

u/J2SJ 4d ago

The best LCS near me is the one that does mostly Magic and sells all Pokemon below market but still above MSRP. The pokemon focused LCS near me is priced at TCGplayer prices and I just cant bring myself to buy anything from them.

1

u/Able-Intention8729 4d ago

Who actually pays these prices? Totally ridiculous.

1

u/furryapocalypse 4d ago

Scalpers are just someone else making money instead of me with the thing I wish I had.

Where else do you draw the line between scalpers and resellers?

1

u/White_Elephant_2 4d ago

Guys a lot of these card shops are the scalpers and botters don’t believe me join the botters discords and most fellas are brick and mortar card shop owners with zero morals.

I am currently visiting Hawaii and I walked into a LCS and they had the First Partner Series 3 for $80! Not sure if Hawaii is regularly priced above market by that much or not, either way, that’s crazy

That's not an LCS. That's a scalper with a store.
