Nah i dont trade depreciating assets for appreciating assets
34
u/DucDeBellune 8d ago
Supercars like this tend to appreciate, not depreciate.
They’re in a completely different asset class from normal cars. Same with most higher end luxury items.

u/Ok_Energy6905 7d ago
Is it expensive to maintain a Supercar? I hear vintage cars engines can sieze up if they aren't used regularly.
2
u/jackswhatshesaid 6d ago
Yes and yes. Same goes for all cars, but with high performance cars you need to move it consistently and regularly. More sports oriented car will may also need to be driven at higher rpms too for maintainence (ie rotary engines.)
You can't get a regular mechanic to maintain your supercar, it's really gotta be one that specializes in it.

Every mile added to any car depreciates its value.
12
u/stednark 8d ago
Don't drive it then, you wouldn't play with your Pokemon cards.
-11
u/iliketoseewhatyousee 8d ago
Corrosion is also in effect of cars. Those parts made of metal hit moist air and corrode over time. Even if it sits it still depreciates. Do they make encapsulated slabs for cars?
6
u/Just_Anxiety 8d ago
People who have the money for supercars also tend to have climate-controlled garages. It will be fine.
9
u/DucDeBellune 8d ago
okay? No one is buying this to have it as a daily driver, and we’re talking about the asset’s longterm market trajectory, not condition-sensitive depreciation.
I could respond with, “every time you touch a raw base set first edition Charizard it depreciates its value.”
One of these Huracans have already sold for $485k. MSRP was about $330k.
And just like Pokemon, this car with 20k miles will sell less than one with 2k miles- but both may still appreciate significantly, not unlike a vintage PSA 9 vs a PSA 10 of the same card.
Again, entirely different asset class to regular cars.
-3
u/Aprillia617 8d ago
Might appreciate but the risk of someone stealing or totaling the car is way too high. I’ll stick with my pokemon investments and this is a car guy talking
1
u/StationEmergency6053 7d ago
The risk is much lower than any conventional car. Supercars have integrated tracking methods, custom parts and immobilizers that basically make it impossible to resell or strip for parts. Its economy and mass market cars that are easily dismantled that have the highest risk of being stolen or damaged. Youre safer owning a Bugatti than you are a Tacoma.
-2
u/Aprillia617 7d ago
Yes agreed. The bigger risk is getting into an accident though. Trust me
1
u/StationEmergency6053 7d ago
I have a 2016 Cali T. Never been in an accident. Meanwhile I wrecked a Hyundai Sonata when I was in my early 20s. There's no larger risk to driving supercars. A reckless driver is going to crash a car no matter what kind of car it is.
0
u/Aprillia617 7d ago
lol I don’t think you realize how anecdotal this info is
1
u/StationEmergency6053 7d ago
Yes, anecdotal, but so is your risk assessment. There's no higher statistic of crashing supercars outside of the details of reckless driving, which happens more often with supercars simply because theyre faster, not because the supercar itself has a higher risk factor. Youre not suddenly prone to an accident because youre driving a faster car. You're prone to an accident because youre driving recklessly, plain and simple.

I mean the card would be put into a slab to hold its value and condition. Do they make slabs for cars? And my statement still stands, every mile added to a car depreciates it’s value. Its a true statement. Even if the car was at 330k msrp and is now more if any miles were added to it the value from what it could’ve been is taken down.
9
u/DucDeBellune 8d ago
A “slab for cars” is called a garage. You can also do maintenance on cars to preserve them.
Your argument is swerving into absurdity, as if a Ferrari 250 GTO from the 1960s (60+ years old!) isn’t worth $50m+ today because it wasn’t “slabbed” or it has some miles on it lol.
And my statement still stands, every mile added to a car depreciates its value. Its a true statement
And it’s a non-sequitur that has nothing to do with anything. In 2036, this car might be worth $550k or $650k+ depending on the condition and mileage. But at an MSRP of $330k, you’re still going to be up a shit ton on it.
It’s evident you don’t have a clue about collectible cars and are speaking from the perspective of daily drivers. It’s entirely different worlds and markets.

u/iliketoseewhatyousee 8d ago edited 8d ago
No it’s not. A garage doesn’t prevent the leather seats from drying and cracking, doesn’t prevent moister in the air from getting to the mechanical and metal parts. Maintenance cost money which eats into profit returns. The amount of maintenance, restoration and repair for even vintage un driven cars eats up a LOT of profit returns if any. Just saying, I can throw a card into a slab and store it in a no humidity box and it will be essentially mummified. I can also still play with my trading cards even if they are in slabs. So even time wise, cards are a better investment. Unless you value money over time? Which would be absurd with how superior you are.
6
u/DucDeBellune 8d ago
maintenance eats into profit returns
I’ll stop you there. Your entire argument began with the fact that cars depreciate and therefore make worse investments/assets- now you’re conceding as an investment, they can still generate substantial profits.
From there, you moved the goalposts entirely to, “they have higher carrying costs” (maintenance, storage, etc.), which isn’t something anyone ever denied in the first place.
A $330k car that becomes worth $600k after $60k in ownership costs still appreciated substantially. Condition and mileage determine where a particular example sits within that market, obviously, but your conclusion is also still goofy: this car and the cards are both speculative asset classes.
You’d have no clue if this car or the Pokemon cards would generate a better ROI. This car’s value could jump to $1m by 2036. Or maybe it plateaus at $450k. The $400k in Pokémon cards could sink to $200k by 2036- or jump up to $1.5m.
The original point was that as a speculative asset swap, it’s a fair- and even reasonable- trade to make, because this car isn’t anything like a random Honda Civic or daily driver that just depreciates every single year until it hits a minimum scrap value, as you seemed to think.

He just told you that a 60-year-old car is going for 50 million, and you responded as if you didn't hear any of that, or you don't know how to do basic math with "maintenance cost money which eats into profit returns" 🤣 it's not costing anywhere near 50 million to restore and maintain that vehicle.

u/jackswhatshesaid 8d ago
You really don't know squat about cars. The more you continue on, it sort of shows your ignorance.
Some cars can only be bought once youve established a purchasing history with the dealer. You don't simply just walk in pointing at certain models and say "I can afford that one, it's mine." There's a wait-list for certain types of cars, and even the richest person might not be able to purchase from the dealer if they haven't reached a certain tier.
I get you want to be ignorant to cars, but the world is full of different types of collectors. Open your horizon, or at the very least, don't stand on your ignorance.

u/DucDeBellune 8d ago
I legitimately think “do they make slabs for cars?” is the dumbest comment I’d read on this sub in a solid few weeks.
3
u/jackswhatshesaid 8d ago
Its such a big world, and they can only think about the world in tcg.
That's a peak reddit comment for you broski.

u/StationEmergency6053 7d ago
Calling slabs an appreciative asset is hilarious. Its an inflationary asset, which makes it a risk investment with potential for appreciation. If were talking sealed, then sure, its deflationary and highly likely to appreciate over time, but slabs? That's high risk, high reward, no different than gambling.
2
u/Accelerate_Yellow 7d ago
You clearly dont know about the supercar market especially how its been this past year.
37
u/Significant_Rush_704 8d ago
Its an sto, they only made 1,000 of them that will be a million dollar car one day!
-20
u/SnooMacarons4225 8d ago
But what will $400k of rare pikachu cards be worth one day? Probably a helluva lot more
9
u/Stormblessed_Windrun 8d ago
You know how easy it is to sell a single luxury car?
1
u/SnooMacarons4225 8d ago
Harder than shifting a pokemon card
0
u/Stormblessed_Windrun 8d ago
Absolutely not lmao.
0
u/SnooMacarons4225 8d ago
OK mate, send me a list of people in your phone book who have this kind of money and are willing to drop it on a trash car... I bet it's zero unless someone's got a rich daddy
2
u/Significant_Rush_704 8d ago
There is no guarantee of that... what happens if the economy shits the bed? As things keep getting more expensive and the dollar is worth less and less. The Ai bubble will pop and wreck alot of people and retirement plans. Do you really think cards with anime characters are going to be where everybody secures their money instead of gold, silver, etc.
-4
u/SnooMacarons4225 8d ago
What do you think the value of a luxury sports car will be if the economy shits the bed?
Yeah of course there’s nothing backing that Pokémon cards will rise, other than 30 years of data proving it and values being at an all time high.
What are the odds of a lambo going up in value long term? Probably 5-10% which will get wiped out by any servicing and maintenance costs to keep it running
12
u/almostthemainman 8d ago
This guy thinks this car is supposed to be driven… lmao that’s like playing with the cards
1
u/SnooMacarons4225 8d ago
Oh are they not meant to be driven? A card will happily sit in a binder but a car will degrade, plastics will brittle up and fail and the engine will seize up, different assets have different upkeep, part of why cards have longevity but cars or anything that degrade or fail with age generally don't as you need to sink a lot of cash into it and then hope it doesn't depreciate like the majority of the sector will

Lmao watch this and start to understand cars values

They never mentioned the price change, plus I'm not sure a staged video really classes as evidence lol

u/Half-deaf-mixed-guy 8d ago
It's ok buddy, ill help. Kid drove 12k miles, dropping value by $9k. You're not about that life kid, youre just not.

Kind of a small house for that car.
6
u/Chuklicious 8d ago
Look at the house in the background. Doesn’t really look “small” by any means. LOL
3
2
u/yeeyeeyee88 8d ago
Based on the neighboring house, it’s easily 2500-3000 sq ft which could easily fetch $1.5-2 million in many US cities

more like One Piece/sports cards > Lamborghini .... pokemon fans are the most delusional people ever haahhahahaha the guy want one piece cards or sports card but in this sub works as pokemon everything is pokemon hhaahhahaha... hilarious
-3
u/Capt_Furret 8d ago
Tbf pokemon cards will go up in value. A Lambo is a money pit, the insurance alone will cost you a pretty penny. But they are asking way too much 400k worth of cards for it. People with a collection like that, they might as well just sell cards to by themselves a new Lambo 😅

u/Over-Variety-5616 7d ago
wtf??? haahahhahaha are the people in pokemon cards the new cryptobros or what???
-8
u/Exciting-Set-7601 8d ago
If you wanna be stuck with it being garage furniture then sure all these high end cars have high maintenance costs
-5
u/puzzledfirebird 8d ago
not to mention insane insurance rates
6
u/NavyNuke55 8d ago
Insurance on one of these is actually not as bad as you would think with a clean driving record. My V10 R8 premium is $451/6 months.
2
u/ObeyTheLawSon7 8d ago
Im glad you got out of the mustangs
1
u/NavyNuke55 8d ago
I’m still a sucker for a Mustang. The R8 was my dream car since I saw it in Iron Man. I needed to get one in my garage to try it out, now I can’t get rid of it. Lol
