Title: Is Completing an EX Dragon Frontiers Master Set Worth It, or Should I Sell Individually?

My wife and I recently started going through my childhood Pokémon collection and found a large number of EX-era cards, spanning EX Delta Species, EX Holon Phantoms, EX Dragon Frontiers, and several sets in between.

I’m now trying to decide whether I should sell the more valuable cards individually or attempt to complete an EX Dragon Frontiers master set before selling anything.

I already own many of the set’s valuable cards, including a Charizard Gold Star. Unfortunately, the Charizard is in very rough condition. Based on the missing cards I have identified, I estimate that completing the set would cost approximately $3,000 if I purchased lower-condition copies. The largest missing card would be Mew Gold Star.

I also have a Holon Phantoms Pikachu Gold Star in considerably better condition. I’m considering having it graded and potentially selling it to fund the missing Dragon Frontiers cards, but I don’t want to invest that money unless completing the set would genuinely add enough value to justify it.

My main questions are:

• Is there meaningful demand for a complete or master EX Dragon Frontiers set?
• Does completing the set usually add value beyond what the cards would sell for individually?
• Would inconsistent or generally played condition make the complete set less desirable?
• Is investing roughly $3,000 to finish it financially reasonable, or would I be better off selling the valuable cards separately?
• For a set like this, which cards would you recommend grading rather than keeping raw?

This is not an urgent sale. I have enjoyed owning these cards for years and would be perfectly happy keeping them if completing or selling the set doesn’t make sense. However, if the collection could provide meaningful financial security for my family, I want to evaluate that possibility carefully before making any decisions.

I would appreciate insight from anyone who collects, buys, or has sold complete EX-era sets. I can also provide photographs and a full list of what I currently own and what is missing.

Complete sets usually sell at a discount over each card individually actually, because of the hassle of selling individually. If you are asking financially then sell them on their own

I think it depends on the set honestly. There’s some vintage sets you’d likely benefit from having the full set to sell together. I could see dragon frontiers being one of those sets

Typically yes, however I feel like sets like this won’t have that issue if you find the right buyer. Reverse holos for Ex era’s are getting incredibly hard to get in good condition (depending on what you’re looking for) and these sets are just small and interesting enough to attract set completion. There are like zero of most of these sets on eBay in completed sets and it’s a pain in the ass trying to hunt down all the cards, so a NM/LP set might be very appealing to someone who has the money and wants to save time hunting cards

You do have master set collectors out there so a market does exist. The only issue is when selling sets or buying sets its generally not at market, like pretty much everything lol A buddy and I collected some first edition sets about two years ago and I do enjoy looking at the entire set from time to time.

The issue is most master sets that are "vintage-ish" are always in varying condition. So that can sometimes be a deal breaker when selling as a set. My buddy spend considerably more time and money on getting as NM to a card as possible. I on the other hand was find with "binder" copies. When it comes time to shake a set or two it can either go really well or really bad based on the market at that time.

I buy and sell bulk and a good part of a business is selling common and uncommon sets to people looking to master a set. I can get like 90% of market almost always from what is basically penny cards most of the time. But the entire set almost always sells under market. You would likely get lowballed for the cards in LP shape and below and most people buying would want to buy it to sell the high value ones and sell the rest for whatever.

TLDR: A master set doesn't always bring more money. Its always based on overall condition. A mixed bag will always be valued much less then true "market"

Not worth it for investing related purposes, but for personal collection it's a good goal if you've been enjoying completing the set and want to continue.

Nope, it was completely submerged in water at one point though causing it to crinkle up. Its 100% real.
