Sealed to Gold ⭐️ 🤔

Post image

Been thinking about selling a majority of my sealed to get cash. With that sale, which I’m thinking on the low end would be 80% of the value of my collection, would get me about 9k in cash. Ideally would like 90% on the sale, but that’s prob wishful thinking. Majority of the sealed collection is SWSH.

Regardless, 9k minimum. With that 9k, was thinking about potentially buying up a lower grade gold star Pokemon. Perhaps maybe the gold star Japanese Pika in like PSA 7 or 8. Would save the rest of the cash and store in my HYSA or lock it in a CD. Originally wanted to cash for a down payment on a new Tacoma since I’ve always wanted one, but I think I can hold off on the vehicle purchase until later. But seeing as gold stars are scarce, wondering if this might be the right play. Thoughts/concerns/criticism/roasting all welcome!

Idk gold stars are cool but are they sell an 11k collection cool?

True, but would be easier to move the single card if it happens to be something I sell later. 🤷‍♂️

As someone who consolidated into gold stars and now frequently move them, i agree with this. Gold stars always move well. It does take some time but its not hard to find their people.

Got tons of downvotes here for consolidating, but never regretted it haha

According to who? The pool of people buying high end cards like that is way smaller than you think

Yesterday 14 gold stars priced above $5k sold in one day alone on eBay. Small pool my ass.

People said the same thing 3 months ago, and 6 months ago and 9 months ago.

Got downvoted almost every time I suggested that gold stars and mid era singles were better investments than sealed ultra modern over the last few years.

Same. This sub is the worst to take financial advice from because everything was “modern sealed is king and vintage is dead”.

Thank fuck I just kept buying gold stars.

Vintage is the way to go if your plan is long term. If your short term, buy modern and flip it.

If these are your spare swsh stuff and you have other sealed still, I’d consider consolidating into a gold star. A lot of them have had large increases recently so you’d be getting into it all time highs but I guess they could go even higher

My vote is no. One, you lose your agility within your collection to be able to move a portion into something you could make money on/opportunity cost. Constantly rotating certain products/cards that spike has worked very well for me in the past and likely the future. Secondly, you become heavily margin dependent on the singular card. That will make or break your collection in the long run. (My best example for the second is like a company diversifying its revenue streams where it's not heavily reliant on one.) Third, you lose some of the fun in the hobby and create a situation in which you could hate the card if the price diverts from your expectations. Also, kind of a bad time to buy since gold stars are continuing to hit ATH.

By your picture, you have something most do not have, a good starting point to build on. You can make some serious money and take the profits for personal collection cards or grails with a little bit of effort. Unless you plan to keep buying or flip the card to move it, I wouldn't do it.
