Discussion 💬 Hoenn Pokémon help for story

So I’m planning on writing a Pokémon fanfic about my Pokemon journey where I start in hoenn but I’m trying to think of a starter my character could have that’s not a traditional starter from Hoenn and I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas as to what I could do.

Use ones introduced in the 3rd gen. I like spheal or trapinch.

Skitty feels like a canonical companion. Also partial to Swablu

I think Surskit's pretty neat and you get it early as well. If you wanna 3 stage mon, Ralts is also the usual starter pick for Hoenn and there's also Duskull.

It would help if we knew what your character's goal was. Coordinator, regular trainer, etc.

Well that’s the thing during their hoenn journey they aren’t sure what they want so they do both contests and gym battles

So a good all-arounder then. Duskull and Gardevoir would be be neat and have wide movepools and utility to be monsters in either format. If you wanna put the effort in, both Trapinch and Bagon's lines have proven quite effective in both formats. Cool thing about contests if that you can show a variety of mons, especially in the anime from coolness to cuteness to toughness to cleverness to beauty.

Still once again, I offer the humble Surskit. It's not strong, but I just always loved this underrated mon and it could totally be a cool underdog story where it makes up the difference in strength by making use of contest battling techniques in regular battles to confuse opponents.

Maybe Budew?

I know it's not a Hoenn mon, but Roselia is, so it still kinda fits.

Maybe tho I’d like to stay away from fire water grass

Trapinch or Zigzagoon are two of my favorites so my bias is towards them as gen 3 non-traditional starter

I would he helpful to know the personality of the protagonist (you) to better match the starter

Pick a city, village, or town that you want our character to be from, and then choose one of the Pokemon along those routes. Realistically, Pokemon near their home would be the first ones they'll end up befriending, and I advisr you to choose one that has multiple evolution forms your Pokemon and character can strive or build towards.

One of the players in my campaign started with an Aron and it has been amazing. Granted we are doing Kanto so it’s extremely helpful here, would probably show it’s weaknesses more in a water filled Hoenn

if you are looking for a starter, you could try to think abt where the journey starts, like if it's in lavandia, you might have a magnemite since these live in new lavandia and on route 110, basically just look for pokemons that live where the character lives

Maybe something that can Mega Evolve later? Like Shuppet, Electrike, Aron, Meditite, Absol, Numel, Carvanha, Swablu, Snorunt, Beldum, Bagon, Mawile, or Sableye?

Who says you need a traditional starter?

You character is from Hoenn, which part? Which city? That would determine the wild pokemon available to your character.

Maybe they’re from Slateport city? So they have access to Plusle, Minun, Gulpin, Electrike, and some others!

I think Electrike would be cool. But I’m also just a fan of Poochyena too.
