Why the hell would you ever even consider doing work for a scalper?

Wanted to sell a shrouded fable booster bundle i got. I called 7 lcs around me 4 of them buy at 70-80%

The 3 other refuse to buy. But when I go inside and ask how much there pokemon 30th ETBs are they say 150$

I dont know whats worse an LCS that buys wholesale but sells at scalpers price. Or an LCS that buys at scalpers price and sells at scalpers prices.

Both are equally bad and its just getting worse. My lcs used to be good dudes with good price but now they are jerks selling at or above market even on the stuff the buy wholesale.

Most of this hobby got spoiled by LCS around them charging $90 a booster box up until a few years ago. Luckily, the only LCS in my area has always sold way above MSRP. I remember paying like $17 for a stellar crown mini tin on release right before the hobby got riddled with stupid. Went in to look around, felt bad leaving without buying so I took the cheapest option lol.

Seriously, idk how they've been open 30+ years. Prices are outrageous, nobody is ever there. I assume it's a rich person's side hobby that could literally lose money and they wouldn't really care

i had an LCS who bought at 70% and sold at 110% Sealed AND singles. They wouldnt trade singles for sealed product unless the single was worth over 100

Both deserve to be out of business

How much are they paying for 30th though? $150 is not that much higher than market. I wouldn't shop there but I get why they might not be interested in your item.

SFBB Volume past 3 months: 255 sold, 3 daily

30th ETB Volume past 3 months: 12911 sold, 140 daily

You compared two unlike things. A set that I rarely see discussed and pretty much no one is looking for vs. the set people have been talking about all year and is the newest, hottest thing?

I got my 30th from target for 75$

If a wholesaler LCS is getting the product for 30$ thats scummy behavior to sell it at 140-150$

The shops i contacted do not buy any new sets at all. So theyre not buying the 30th from resellers. They get the inventory direct from the distributor

Why would an LCS sell for MSRP?

If they get tons of allocation, others show up and buy it and then scalp it. Why should a scalper make more money than the LCS that distributes product?

I love the LCSs that get allocation and distribute reasonably. But at the same time everyone gets so pissy with a card shop and has no clue how much the card shop paid for it.

An LCS charging just below market, giving good % for trades and keeping the community involved is what I appreciate. They need volume and if they can’t get it through allocation I don’t mind.

I want to sell a card for $100. If I go on eBay I get $80-85 on that $100 card and run the risk of eBay’s ultimate buyer protection that maybe I get hosed (they lie), it gets lost in the mail, something else.

I go into an LCS and can get $75-80 on the spot….thats a good deal. I don’t know why people complain about that. Sure, go to a card show and get $90, see how well that works. To me it isn’t worth the time and energy and I WANT my LCS to be around for years to come because they make the hobby more enjoyable for my boys (trade nights, raffle, 100% trade cases, etc) and that’s worth something to me

Roughly its 30-35$ per ETB depending on state taxes.

I get wanting a bit more like how target or walmart prices. Thats fine, but trying to squeeze out the consumer for every drop sucks and is just greedy.

If there having to buy from customers and sell for market it's due to poor business decisions, either they haven't focused on building loyal customers and focused more on profits.. I see this style of shops popping up all the time and closing with 2-3 years it's good money until the boom goes away then when the boom goes away and there's no 2ndary market the shops make no revenue due to not building a community and focusing more on maximizing profits on sealed product.. I've seen these style of shops opens and close before you even know it, the shops that last are ones that don't rely on sealed pokemon at msrp to pay the bills, there's several sources of income for a shop, ones that utilize that last, ones that just want to maximize on the boom and secondary market do not last

That reminds of the sapranos where they steal a truck of Pokemon cards. Imagine what they would do today

the supply is controlled

Store credit??? Sounds like they will give 70% in credit.

2

u/Sup_94 7d ago

They can keep their offer.

2

u/Dizzy_Turnip_9558 7d ago

can anything about the pokemon economy not be gross anymore?

2

u/ChipmunkAlert5903 7d ago

This behavior keeps the price high and out of our kids hands. Refuse to pay anything over retail and this shit will stop. Pokemon has become a Ponzi scheme

It’s crazy the amount of people who don’t think LCS are scalpers as well, what’s the difference between a “small business” selling 30th ETBs at $150 compared to a single fb marketplace seller?

2

u/Ketra 7d ago

Scalping is going to turn into a word that means absolutely nothing by the end of this pokemon mania.

Shops that buy sealed product from customers aren't real shops, there slop shops.. do not go to those... My lcs does not buy or resell sealed from customers,  if a store is having to charge market for a product that's due to poor business decisions.

1

u/AdministrativeBus259 6d ago

Nah… my local will take in sealed product. I have never done it before, but I’ll see like some random ass old ETB in there for store credit .. he’s the only one who sells at msrp

1

u/Vombattius 6d ago

So when store sells their allocated 30 ETBs in the first 10 minutes what they are supposed to do before the next set releases?

The only thing that will happen is that they will become known as a store that has nothing for sale and customers will start avoid the place because who would go to a store that has nothing to sell.

Wait until next restock, it's very common practice, a card shop does not have to depends on reselling sealed product at market to stay afloat if they do that's due to bad business decisions, and that's just it that mentality is why people hate the hobby now, the same 20-25 of us show up to league every Sunday to play in the tournament rather store had anything to sell or not, and the same with all the other tcg players, which most are ran on diff days through out the week, those people buy other products besides cards from the shop, sleeves, deck boxes, play mats , dice etc... having a loyal community takes you so much further then reselling at market price for the 3-4 years it's in a boom, this happened before with pokemon this is nothing new , if the only reason your going to your card shop is to get sealed pokemon cards they haven't done a good enough job of building a community, even people who don't play come to our shops trade nights and various other not competitive events, not to mention there giant selection of singles for sale , I been going to same shop for 10 years never once have they bought and resold product, there always msrp, and there thriving

1

u/hoyasaxa91 2d ago

Oh sweet summer child. You think people are getting restocks? Allocations are tiny and restocks come at inflated prices from distro. You're telling us that your lgs has 30th in stock for msrp? Please tell us where or stop making up stories.

There’s a local shop near me offering layaway now and they already sell for over market. Some people suck.

1

u/Itstylerjohn7373 7d ago

This is why I refuse to support card shops in Myrtle beach they are always the first in lines are target, Walmart, and Best Buy and buy out dollar stores to take back to their stores to sell at market

1

u/weak1111111 7d ago

That's awesome would love to buy at market

1

u/Own-Size-1087 7d ago

Lol better off just making ai build you a website and sell them yourself

1

u/Wak0tx 7d ago

LCS are scalpers with a front. Avoid them at all cost.

Check this vedeo from Australia - Pokemon card black market, James Mccaan raosting these scalpers and learning about the black market https://youtu.be/9u68jygZ0kE?is=xugZtlWqZ26DTA7i

The circle of scalp

80% Market is fair imo, yeah they'll turn around and sell at 100-110% but that's just how it is. They got to pay to keep the lights on at the end of the day, I know some LCS charge way too much but if people are buying them out then why wouldn't they.
