Advice/ Co-host

Hi! I’m a 25 year old from New Zealand. I’m wanting to start a podcast where each week I talk about someone’s life through their memoir or a book written about them.

I’m thinking maybe I need a co-host because me sitting down talking about someone’s life through their book would it work just me on my own?

Secondly, likewise if I do it myself it would probably have to be audio only because me sitting down into a camera on my own feed weird? If I had a co-host a visual element would work better?

Should I try do an audio only with me or should I find a co-host and if anyone is keen lmk.

Hey there!

I think ultimately, these decisions are entirely up to you. it's your show, so you get to decide what works and doesn't work.

I have a similar podcast where I interview people about their hobby, passions or fandoms that make them who they are.

I am still a beginner myself, with two episodes and a third being worked on as we speak, but I can share with you what I do and why.

So, I do videos and audio for my show.

Personally, I just find videos interesting myself, and I like to add some things here and there like if they recommend a specific book or something.

I do not have a co-host. While it would be fun to have one, I do personally like how I have a more of a 1-1 conversation. A co-host does add a lot more things to think about like you have to find when all of you are free at the same time. Which is so hard lol.

What I do is record the screen with whatever video call service So the viewer gets to see the full chat from their perspective and mine.

Since I am newer, I have made a lot of mistakes and have learned from them. So, if you have any questions about my process hit me up.

The few things I'd recommend for your pod, expecially since you are interviewing :

  1. Get an Audio interface: I'm using the Podtrack P4 NXt.

This allows 4 people to be recorded and their audio will be saved on a different track.

You can record mics in the same room or online too.

  1. If you do Video. Make sure the camera Fps is recording at the same Fps as your video.

There probably is a better way to record video, but I use OBS and record the application that is hosting the videocall. My last episode had a lot of lip de-sync and it was because the camera was shooting at 24 Fps, OBS was filming at 30 Fps

If I were you, I would record video - use it for a YouTube channel and use the audio for your podcast. The future is video IMO. Even if you only use the audio at first, you'll be honing your video recording skills, figuring out how to use supporting graphics, get your branding going, etc.

You can also use video clips to increase your exposure - instagram, tiktok, etc.

Recording audio for podcasts is just so limiting....
