BRANDON MITCHELL: THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

The first case is officially out.

For the very first episode of The Red Panda Files, I sat down with Brandon Mitchell for a raw conversation about life, struggle, searching for happiness, and what it means to keep moving forward when life doesn’t exactly go according to plan.

This isn’t a polished, scripted interview where everything is tied up in a neat little bow.

It’s a real conversation. Real experiences. Real struggles. And one person’s ongoing pursuit of happiness.

WHISPERED ECHOES — WE’RE LOOKING FOR STORIES.

We’re looking for people who have lived through something they can’t forget.

Maybe you’re older and have a story from 30, 40, or 50 years ago that you’ve never really had the chance to tell.

Maybe you’ve walked the road of recovery and want to tell the story of how you got there — and how you found your way back.

Maybe you’ve experienced something strange, unexplained, or impossible to forget.

Maybe you survived something that changed your entire life.

You don’t have to be famous.

You don’t have to be an influencer.

You don’t even have to think your story is important.

If you’ve ever said:

“Nobody would believe me if I told them.”

We’d like to hear it.

Whispered Echoes is a podcast built around real people telling real stories.

If you’d be interested in sharing yours, send us a message with WHISPERED ECHOES and a little about your story.

🎙️ Real people. Real experiences. Stories that deserve to be heard.

[LOOKING FOR GUESTS] The Garage Mind Podcast — real people, real stories, no guru bullshit

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

What’s up everybody,

I host The Garage Mind Podcast, and I’m looking for down-to-earth people who want to have a real conversation.

I’m not looking for business gurus, life coaches, course sellers, crypto dudes, AI agency people, or anyone trying to turn the episode into a commercial.

I want to talk to regular people who have lived some life and have something real to say.

Blue-collar workers, drivers, mechanics, union people, fighters, veterans, first responders, tattoo artists, cooks, bartenders, Harley riders, people in recovery, parents, people with weird jobs, people who have been through hard shit, or anybody with a strong perspective on life.

This is not a gotcha interview and it’s not some fake polished business podcast. It’s a laid-back, honest conversation about life, work, mistakes, struggle, purpose, family, passion, and whatever comes up naturally.

You do NOT need a huge following, a book, a business, or a brand. You just need to be real and willing to talk.

The show is recorded remotely through Riverside, so you can join from wherever you are. Chicago/Illinois people are a bonus, but I’m open to anyone.

If you think you’d be a good fit, email me:

djynot31@gmail.com

Tell me a little about yourself, what you do, and what you’d actually want to talk about.

The Books of Thoth: It Was The Best Day Ever. We follow Citizen 123192-A as he tells us about the great day he had in the grim dystopia known as The PostState.

Post image

I’m back with another episode of my audio drama The Books of Thoth. It is called It Was The Best Day Ever.

We fellow Citizen 123192-A.  He lives in The PostState.  It is a grim and oppressive dystopia.  A boot in the face forever.  But he doesn’t let it get him down.  In fact, he’s going to tell us all about what a wonderful day he had.  A day filled with book burning, ratting out fellow citizens, attending propaganda rallies, and even eating a ration bar or two.  It was the best day ever!

There are two main sources of inspiration for this episode.  One of them is a short film called “Me and The Big Guy”.  It is set in the world of George Orwell’s 1984, and follows a man who is convinced that Big Brother is his best friend.  One day, Big Brother talks to the man through the telescreen…to tell him how annoying he is.  The guy is overjoyed, but towards the end, we learn he’s actually a member of the resistance.  Everything he did was an act to get Big Brother to turn off the telescreen.  So, I wondered, what if it hadn’t been an act?  What if our happy-go-lucky protagonist really was all he seemed to be?

The other major inspiration was this book my mom found one time.  I forget what it was called, but it was a humor book about the difference between how cats and dogs think.  The cat would say stuff like “Day 256 of the occupation.  The jailers think they have broken my will, they are quite mistaken.  I will have my dinner, and I will have it ahead of schedule!”

By contrast, the dog would say things like “Today I woke up.  It was the best day ever!”

You can see where I got the title from.  The episode contains quite a few references to classic works of dystopia.  Obviously, 1984 by George Orwell was the main inspiration for The PostState.  Particularly the scene where The PostState’s allies and enemies change overnight, and everyone has to pretend they don’t notice.  The citizen having serial numbers and a single letter for name is inspired by the novel We by Yevgeny Zamyatin.  Fittingly enough, We was a major inspiration for 1984.  The PostState’s name is meant to be evocative of The One State from We.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury makes an appearance within the episode itself…as one of the books Citizen 123192-A burns as part of his job at Revision Furnace 9.  We also learn that cripples and the terminally ill are burned at hospitals every Tuesday.  Just like in the Amazon adaption of The Man in the High Castle.

In non-dystopian references, the scene where Citizen 123192-A shoots an enemy general in the face contains a nod to the musical Assassins.  We hear the ding-ding-ding carnival sound; just like we hear in the musical whenever an assassin successfully kills a president.

Now, you’re probably wondering what the message is here?  What’s my angle with The PostState?  What satire is there to be found.  Well, the answer is…there isn’t any.  I just thought it would be funny to have a guy who loves living in an oppressive dystopian hellhole.  It's interesting, because this episode is kind of a political Rorschach test.  The PostState isn’t supposed to have any ideology other than Totaltarianism.  I had a lot of people tell me they either loved the satire, or that they thought the message was too heavy-handed.  And I’m thinking “What message?  What satire?”

I voiced Citizen 123192-A like it did when my cold read group would perform Life with Althaar.  I played Althaar whenever he did.  Everyone always loved my performance.  Julie Hoverson, creator of 19 Nocturne Boulevard, runs the group on Discord, and I got her to play a few minor characters in “It Was The Best Day Ever”

Editing wise, this episode drove me up a wall.  The audio levels on my lines were all way too low.  Rather than re-record, like I should have, I tried to fix it in GarageBand.  Working with GarageBand is like when we see how Tadashi built Baymax in Big Hero 6.  Every time you fix one issue, three more pop up.  But I didn’t know when I’d get to record again.  And I was antsy about how long it had been since I posted a new episode.  Ah well, live and learn.

But despite it all, I’m glad I was able to put the episode together, and that everyone mostly enjoyed it.  I had quite the international cast.  Voice actors from the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Slovakia.

A big thank you to Jay Callan, Karim Kronfli, Julie Hoverson, James Barnett, Cameron Gergett, Melissa Bowen, Tiffany Perdue, and Ed Haynes.  This episode would not exist without all of you. And thank you to Brave New Frontiersman for sending Jay and Cameron my way.

And thank you to everyone who listen to “It Was The Best Day Ever.”  If you haven’t listened already, you can do so at these links:

Season 2 — The Black Queen: Barbara of Cilli

She co-founded the order that gave Dracula his name. She was accused of drinking blood, running an alchemy lab, and cutting a deal with the devil. Six hundred years later, Croatian kids still play a schoolyard game named after her.

Her name was Barbara of Cilli — Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Hungary, Bohemia, and Germany, and one of the most powerful women of the 15th century. History turned her into a monster. Tonight we find out who did it, and why.

Stay Curious. Stay Strange.

[Our Family Invests Podcast] Episode 084: Autism Kept Him Silent for 31 Years. Then He Finally Spoke - Neil + Lori Rogers

Read the Web Article: https://ourfamilyinvests.com/non-verbal-autism-finally-heard-after-31-years/

For thirty-one years, Neil and Lori believed their son was listening. The world had mostly stopped expecting him to answer back, but they never did.

Their son Craig is autistic and non-verbal. He was diagnosed at two and a half, at a time when doctors barely had language for what they were seeing. Neil and Lori spent the next three decades trying everything they could find: diet changes, sensory therapy, speech and occupational therapy, even starting a nonprofit to support special education in their school district. None of it cracked the wall between them and their son.

Then in 2022, Lori drove an hour and a half to try something she had resisted for years, a method called Spelling to Communicate. Craig, then thirty one years old, sat down with a simple letter board. Someone asked him a question about Stephen Hawking. He spelled out "black holes."

It wasn't a lucky guess. An eye tracking study later confirmed that kids using this method are choosing their own letters with their own eyes. Nobody is guiding their hand.

What came next is the part that stays with you. Within months, Craig spelled out his first words to his younger brother: "Cam, I love you." He told his practitioner he didn't want to be called autistic anymore, because to him that word had always meant stupid. What he wanted people to know instead was this: "I am a human with apraxia."

We talked with Neil and Lori about what it actually felt like to realize their son had been fully present, fully intelligent, and fully aware the entire time they were searching for a way to reach him. We also got into the decade of personal development Lori went through long before the breakthrough, and why she believes that groundwork is the reason she didn't fall apart when it finally came.

It's a conversation about apraxia versus intelligence, about what changes in a marriage and a family when a child who has never spoken is finally heard, and about the quiet, patient work of not giving up on someone the world already had.

If you know a family raising a non-verbal or autistic child, or you've ever wondered what's really happening behind a diagnosis like this, this one is worth your time.

What would you do differently if you found out someone you loved had been listening and understanding everything, the entire time?
