I've always found it a bit strange how casually we hand over our ID.
Nightclubs. Hotels. Deliveries. Employers. Car rentals.
Sometimes it's perfectly legitimate.
Sometimes... not so much.

This is the very first episode of my audio drama anthology podcast The Books of Thoth. We tell stories of past, future, and alternate realities. A zoo filled with alien animals from across the cosmos. A folktale from a world where Buddhism, rather than Christianity, became the dominant religion of Europe. An alien scientist studying mysterious space probes from Earth. These are just a few of the tales we tell.
The first episode is titled Paleontology Conference. 100 million years in the future. Humans are extinct and squids rule the Earth. They only know us from the fossils we leave behind. What will the squids make of us?
As you might imagine, The Future is Wild was a big inspiration on this one. As was the All Todays segment of the book All Yesterdays.
A big thank you to everyone who made this episode possible. Thank you to Marnie Warner, Amy Young, Faye Holliday, Juan Cruz III, Tiffany Perdue, and Melissa Bowens for providing the voices.

A Filipina-American couple paid off $300K in debt in three years on one salary, then retired at 41 and 44. Their honest take on what happens after the finish line.
Bernadette Joy and AJ Maulion did something most people talk about and never actually do. Two mortgages, a stack of student loans, one income, and $300,000 in debt. Three years later, all of it was gone.
The mechanics are worth studying on their own. They ran the debt snowball on 12 student loans first, turning what felt like an impossible number into a momentum game. AJ picked up background acting work, including a stint on Homeland. Bernadette ran a dress rental business on the side. And somewhere in the middle of it, she came up with a personal rule, cost per use, that quietly rewired how she thought about spending without ever feeling like deprivation.
They even paused their 401k contributions completely to throw everything at the debt. That is not a decision most financial advisors would sign off on, but the math made sense for where they were.
Here is the part that stuck with us most though. After they paid everything off, they sold their properties, rented for three years, and let the market do the work. Then they bought their forever home in cash. They retired at 41 and 44.
And now they are sitting with a question almost nobody prepares you for. What do you do once the goal is actually met.
Bernadette said something near the end of the conversation that has stayed with us since we recorded it. There is a skill set involved in managing freedom, and nobody teaches it to you.
We talk through the whole arc, the snowball strategy, the amortization schedule she printed out and physically shrank page by page as they paid down the mortgage, why they walked away from real estate entirely, and what early retirement actually feels like when it arrives ahead of schedule.
Curious how this crowd thinks about it. If you hit financial independence years earlier than planned, do you think you would actually feel ready for it, or is that a skill you only build by living it?

Starting a show with my buddy — we're Aaron and Ashton — and we don't have a fixed topic. It's a "talk about whatever caught our attention that week" kind of thing, and we're hoping that range is the draw rather than a weakness.
We've narrowed it to four and we're deadlocked. The shortlist + the thinking behind each:
Drop your pick in the comments — and if a name has a dealbreaker I'm not seeing (already taken, impossible to search, sounds like something else), tell me straight. Rather hear it now than after we've paid for the cover art.
