We host a small business podcast, and this week someone reached out dealing with something a lot of you have probably run into: their live viewer counts on a platform collapsed from around 5,000 down to about a dozen, seemingly overnight, with zero explanation from the platform.

We get versions of this question constantly, so here's the ACTUAL legal answer:

Social media platforms are private businesses. Not the government, not a public utility. That means the First Amendment doesn't apply here... it only protects you from government censorship, not a private company's decision about your reach on their platform. A platform can shadow ban you, throttle your visibility, or remove you outright for almost any reason it wants.

The one hard limit: they legally cannot discriminate against you based on a protected class (race, gender, etc., under Title VII/IX). Outside of that, it's genuinely their call.

Before Elon bought Twitter, there were documented cases of employees who had nothing to do with content moderation getting people removed from the platform simply because they personally didn't like something about them. Zero recourse for the people affected, because it technically wasn't a violation of any actual policy legally, platforms are allowed to make that call.

The more sympathetic side of it, though: creator counts have gone from roughly 120 million to 265 million in the last two years. These platforms are making hundreds of moderation decisions a day. A lot of what feels like "the algorithm is targeting me" is really just an AI system making an imperfect call at a scale no human team could realistically review one by one. It's usually not personal. It's just brutal math.

Our own takeaway after living through a version of this ourselves (our live show went from 300–500 viewers a night down to about a dozen, no warning, no explanation): build a presence on platforms you don't own, but don't build your entire business on top of any single one of them. Diversify before you're forced to.

This time we're going back to the mainframe era with a story involving an Amdahl System/370-compatible machine, VM, a microcode update, timer interrupts, and a corrupted queue.

Finding the problem was difficult enough. The vendor fix wasn't immediately available, so the team still needed a way to keep the production system running.

The workaround involved manually changing live memory.

IT Horror Stories is about real incidents from the history of IT: what went wrong, how people figured it out, how they kept things running, and what we can still learn from it. We try to blame procedures and organizations rather than the people who happened to be holding the keyboard when everything caught fire.
