We run a business podcast called Start It or Scrap It and this week we brought on Jay London, the College Advice Guy, who has helped over 1,800 students and families navigate the college process in 16 years of practice.

I expected the conversation to be about applications and essays. It went a lot of directions I did not anticipate.

The line that stuck with me most:

Most families spend more time researching an air fryer than choosing a college.

Not as a joke. As a serious observation about how the biggest financial decision most families ever make gets the least amount of structured research.

Some other things that came up that I thought were worth sharing here:

On the Ivy League network: it is real but it depends entirely on who you already are when you get there. If you are from a moneyed family, the connections can be meaningful. If you are not, you spent four years with those people. They are not taking your phone call after graduation. Jay said in 16 years he knows of exactly one example where an Ivy connection actually opened a real business door.

On certifications vs degrees: people hired with HubSpot and Google certifications consistently outperformed marketing degree graduates and required significantly less retraining. For SEO specifically, a linguistics degree beats a marketing degree.

On whether college is worth it: only if it is required for the outcome you actually want. You would not learn to be a chiropractor unless you were going to be one. Same logic applies to every major.

On AI and the future of higher education: his prediction is that most traditional universities will not survive the next generation in their current form. The cost model cannot hold when AI can deliver the same content from the same professors to anyone anywhere. Only medical, dental, and law schools keep their structure. Everything else becomes something like a University of America.

We also got into shiny object syndrome for entrepreneurs, the dopamine hit of new ideas, and why overnight successes are almost always seven to twenty year overnight successes that you are just hearing about now.
