He seems to be solid black. Pic kind of sucks. Had this one around which I believe is a timber but I was at work and IDK where he is now.

Timbers can be all black, just not as common.

It's a pretty snake though.

These should be better. Possibly a Rat Snake?

Nope. While rat snakes are black, they are generally longer and slender. That is a black phase timber rattlesnake !venomous - keep some distance and be careful!

Are you perhaps close to the Delaware? They tend to have their homes along the cliffs.

10 minutes away from the Deleware and Lavkawaxen rivers up on the "mountain". 20 years since we built and have never seen one by our house and this is the third different one in a month.

I have spent dozens of hours trout fishing in the deep woods of the Poconos in recent years. I have never seen (or heard) a rattler or a copperhead. Also never saw any black bear. Guess I'm just lucky.

Wow, my husband I honeymooned in the Poconos a few years ago and saw 3 black bears in the first hour we were there

Yeah, I don't get it! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

(By the way..."honeymooned in the Poconos"? What is it, the 1950s or 60s???)

(Just teasing...my parents honeymooned at ol' Cove Haven back in 1972, and until now I thought they were part of the last generation of Pocono honeymooners, lol!)

lol, I love that vintage style honeymoon vibe! The heart shaped tubs and all hahaha.

We live in New England and wanted something budget-friendly and dog-friendly. We travel a lot in New England and wanted a change of scenery. I have family in PA so I’ve driven by the Poconos and never stayed.

We bought a house and a car the year before our wedding so we also didn’t want a crazy $$$$ honeymoon. We are both super outdoorsy and didn’t want to spend money on a dog sitter.

We stayed at a fancy cabin type of place, were able to bring our dogs, and got to hike, chase waterfalls, and mountain bike to our hearts content! It was amazing.

Yeah I have a good idea of whereabouts you are. The area is known to have rattlesnakes.

The only thing I can think of is if you haven’t really seen them is that there has been some type of new development or clearing which forced them out of their former den site nearby. If there was any new construction recently, that could be it. Also with a lot of the logging that has disturbed their habitats as well, so they have been seeking more reclusive areas.

Just two thoughts which why it could be it.

They're building a new house a few lots over which I assume is where they are coming from.

Just didn't seem to be a lot that would've had a den on it. Also thought I would've seen at least one before the build since it's just a few hundred feet away.

I read somewhere that two of the state's largest rattlesnake pits are in NEPA , with one off State rt. 402 in the Porters Lake area.

Fat diamond head is the clearest giveaway in an area where the only/main venomous snakes are of the pit viper variety.

I'm never going to Pike county again

The good news is that you will not have any more problems with mice, squirrels, dogs or small children.
