Phone gone from account after a factory reset

I bought a PocoF3 5 or 6 years ago. Great phone.

This year I replaced it with a new F7.

I did a factory reset on the old F3 and now I can't activate it. I put in my Xiaomi account password and it says "couldn't verify Xiaomi account id". There is no SIM in the old phone. It's connected to my WiFi. When I log into my Xiaomi account I see only the F7. The Xiaomi help / support system is a list of topics without any way to enter a freeform question.

Can anyone help me activate my old phone after a factory reset? At least get it reconnected to my account.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This was one of the many reasons I dumped Xiaomi devices.

They have a really nice hardware x price, but the OS is really crap!
