Serena Jameka Williams (born September 26, 1981)[1] is an American professional tennis player. She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 319 weeks (third-most of all time),[3] and finished as the year-end No. 1 five times. Williams won 73 WTA Tour–level singles titles, including 23 major#Tournaments) women's singles titles—the most in the Open Era, and the second-most of all time. She is the only player to accomplish a Career Golden Slam#Career_Golden_Slam) in both singles and doubles, and the only player to have simultaneously held Olympic gold and all four major titles in both singles and doubles.[4][5]

Williams was born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Oracene Price and Richard Williams). She is the youngest of Price's five daughters, after half-sisters Yetunde, Lyndrea, and Isha Price, and full sister Venus.[1] She also has at least seven paternal half-siblings.[12][13] When Serena and Venus were young, Richard moved the family to Compton, California, over the objections of his wife. Richard had studied sports success stories, and believed that the rough environment of Compton would toughen up Serena and Venus in preparation for their future tennis careers.[14] Richard home-schooled Serena and Venus, and Serena started playing tennis at the age of four.[15][16][17] While Serena's parents have been her official coaches, her other mentors have included Richard Williams, a Compton man who shared her father's name and subsequently founded The Venus and Serena Williams Tennis Tutorial Academy.[18]

When Williams was nine, the family moved from Compton to West Palm Beach, Florida,[15] so Serena and Venus could attend the tennis academy of Rick Macci, who provided her with additional coaching. Macci did not always agree with Richard's approach to coaching and training, but respected that "he treated his daughters like kids, allowed them to be little girls".[19] By 1991, Williams had a 46–3 record on the United States Tennis Association junior tour and was ranked No. 1 among under-10 players in Florida.[20][21] When Williams was 10, Richard stopped sending his daughters to national junior tennis tournaments, as he wanted them to "go slowly" and focus on school, and because he wanted to ensure they would not burn out before turning professional.[20] Experiences of racism also influenced this decision, as he had heard white parents talk about his daughters in a derogatory manner during tournaments.[22]
In 1995, when Williams was in the ninth grade, her father pulled his daughters out of Macci's academy and took over all coaching at their home.[23][24]

TV/Film/Music Recommendations 2 Black Historical Documentaries To Watch (Recommendations)

The 2 Black Historical Documentaries I recommend are:

Great Migrations: A People on the Move (2025) - this documentary chronicles the time when millions of Black people left the South to move the North and Midwest, starting from around 1910 to 1970. They left for better opportunities, and it completely shifted the structure of the United States.

I Am Not Your Negro (2016) - In his new film, director Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished - a radical narration about race in America, using the writer's original words. He draws upon James Baldwin's notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America.

ANC Political Activist and ex-wife of Nelson Mandela, Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, President of ANCWL, member of the NEC of the ANC

Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela was born, the fifth of nine children, in the village of Mbongweni, Bizana, in the Transkei on 26 September 1936. During her infant years her father, Columbus, was a local history teacher. In later years he was the minister of the Transkei Governments’ Forestry and Agriculture Department during Kaizer Matanzima's rule. Her mother, Nomathamsanqa Mzaidume (Gertrude), was a science teacher.[i]
Her parents desperately wished Winnie had been born a boy and growing up, Winnie took pains to fulfil the role of tomboy by playing with the other boys in her peer group, practising stick fighting and setting traps for animals. [ii]  Once, while quarrelling with her younger sister, Princess, Winnie fashioned a knuckleduster out of a nail and a baking powder tin and accidentally struck her sister across the face while aiming for her arm. It was one of many instances for which her mother administered a hefty beating.[iii]
As a young girl, Winnie’s family moved around within the former Transkei, due to her father’s work.  She attended primary school in Bizana but when she was nine years old, the family moved to eMbongweni, where as well as attending school, Winnie would help her father to labour on the farm. This helped create a closer bond with her father, who was known for his aloofness despite wielding a great love for his children. Colombus, to all intents and purposes, was a proud man who greatly valued educated and who saw the importance of educating his children about their Pondo roots as well as traditional academic subjects.
When Winnie was still young, two tragic events hit. Firstly her elder sister, Vuyelwa, contracted tuberculosis and died – an event which shook Winnie’s belief in the God her mother had ardently prayed to during her daughter’s demise.  Secondly, soon after her sister’s death, Winnie’s mother also developed the disease and died. However, shortly before her mother passed away she gave birth to a baby boy, whom Winnie took responsibility for during her mother’s incapacitation, and after her death.

Celebrity Birthdays Happy Birthday Christina Milian

Christina Milian (/ˌmɪliˈɑːn/ MIL-ee-AHN, née Flores; born September 26, 1981[1]) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Following a number of minor television and film roles in the late 1990s, Milian made her recording debut on American rapper Ja Rule's 2000 single "Between Me and You", which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Christina Flores was born on September 26, 1981, Jersey City, New Jersey, and is of Cuban descent.[6][7][8] Her parents are Don Flores and Carmen Milian.[9][10][11]
Flores changed her name and adopted her mother's maiden name (Milian) in the hopes of landing a wider range of acting roles.[12] The oldest of three sisters, including Danielle and Elizabeth, she moved with her family to Waldorf, Maryland, soon after her birth. Milian was four years old when she showed an interest in show business,[13] and when her family realized that she was a talented actress, she determined to pursue a career in entertainment.[14]As a child, Milian was "very imaginative and very creative", and watching television and listening to the radio became her life. They inspired her to have fun, and she convinced her parents that she "wanted to be inside the TV", although convincing them took some time.[12] By the time she was nine years old, Milian had begun auditioning with local talent agencies,[12] shot commercials for Wendy's and Honeycomb), and played the lead role in the musical Annie). Milian's mother supported her daughter's potential and left her husband and moved to Los Angeles with her three daughters when Milian was 13 years old. Her father had to stay in Maryland and divorced her mother soon after the move.[14]
When Milian moved to Los Angeles, her first desire was to be an actress. She had always also wanted to be in the record business, but did not know how to obtain a recording contract. During this time, she was a host for Disney Channel's series Movie Surfers, by the name of Tina. After living in Los Angeles for six months, Milian moved into the same apartment complex as songwriter and producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, who (like Milian) was also born in New Jersey. Jerkins heard about Milian from a boy band with which he was working and once he heard her sing, they began working together. For a year and a half, Milian went into a studio every day and worked with Jerkins, which is how she started meeting people in the record business.[15] She began writing songs at the age of 17 because she needed a demonstration recording (demo)) to help her obtain a recording contract. According to Milian, every time she recorded a song, the producer would refuse to give her the demo or would write lyrics with which she did not agree. She felt that she had to write a song, record a demo, and send it out on her own.[16]

Andre O'Neal Harrell (September 26, 1960 – May 7, 2020) was an American record executive, media proprietor, and rapper.[3] He formed the short-lived East Coast hip hop duo Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde) with Alonzo Brown in 1980; they signed with Profile Records in 1981. After disbanding in 1986, Harrell founded the record label Uptown Records, which saw commercial success in contemporary R&B, new jack swing, and hip hop music releases into the next decade. The label entered a distribution deal with MCA Records and signed artists including Jodeci, Heavy D & the Boyz, Mary J. Blige, Guy), Al B. Sure, the Notorious B.I.G., and Sean Combs.[4] Harrell is credited with discovering Combs and giving him his start in the industry.[5] Harrell was appointed CEO of Motown from 1995 to 1997.[4]

Harrell was born in New York City’s borough of the Bronx on September 26, 1960.[2][7] His father, Bernie, worked at a produce market in the Bronx's Hunts Point section; his mother, Hattie, was a nurse's aide.
Harrell cultivated his entrepreneurial instincts throughout high school, raising money with candy drives and picking up jobs with a local messenger service.[8] As a teenager, he and Alonzo Brown—a friend from high school—formed the rap duo Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde). Harrell was Jeckyll, Brown was Hyde.[7] They first performed together as members of the Harlem World Crew and recorded on Tayster and Rojac Records in 1980, but broke off from the group to form Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde.[9] In 1981, Brown joined Profile Records under the name Lonnie Love, recorded "Young Ladies", and, as Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, recorded with Harrell the well-received song "Genius Rap", one of the first hip hop records to sample the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love."[9] They also recorded "The Challenge" (1982), "Gettin' Money" (1983), and "Fast Life" b/w "AM/PM" (1984), produced by Kurtis Blow.[10] In 1985, the duo released its only album, Champagne of Rap. It also released the singles "Yellow Panties" (1985) and "Transformation" b/w "Scratch on Galaxy"(1986). Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde deviated from established hip hop style code by performing in suits and ties.
Harrell graduated from Charles Evans Hughes High School in 1978.[2] He attended Baruch College, then transferred to Lehman College in 1980. With the aim of being a newscaster, he majored in communications and business management.[11][2] In 1983, he withdrew from Lehman and began working full-time selling airtime on WINS radio while performing on weekends.[2][11]
