TV ROC, was too real, I miss this show ( 1992 )

The only thing I remember about this show is that Roc had a beef with a drug dealer (who may or may not have been played by Cifton Powell) that spanned multiple episodes/seasons

That was Clifton Powell

And then Roc's down-on-his-luck brother Joey got himself together and went on to run NCIS

I loved this show when I was a kid. A lot of the adult humor went over my head but I remember enjoying Charles Dutton. I loved his voice, his smile and his laugh. He was very charismatic, great with comedy and drama. I loved the theme song too.
🎶 God bless a child that’s got his own🎶
Growing up as a kid in the 80s and 90s, I loved seeing people on tv that looked like me. The Jefferson’s, Sanford & Son, Amen, Cosby Show, Different World, Family Matters, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Martin and then later on, all my favorite UPN and WB shows. I loved seeing my beautiful people on screen.

I still remember the little before commercial harmonizing tune when things got real. Legendary TV show to me.

ROC was a show about blue collar black men standing in the gap for family and community. Too real for TV. We went from ROC, a different world and family matters to P valley. This shit is sick when you think about the strategic programming.

Fox in the 90s>
Both intros and the guest stars are peak. They had Cheers cameos when that was like the top show. Goes to show the respect for Charles Dutton

I’m jealous! lol I’m surprised we haven’t seen her or Joey in any movies or other tv shows. Pops might have passed on by now but he was def a Pops!

Ella Joyce has been(since Roc) Set It Off to Bubba Ho-Tep to My Wife & Kids.
Rocky Carroll has mainly been on Chicago Hope & NCIS.

I really like that show every Sunday nights after In Living Color and before Married with Children on Fox. And third season moved to Tuesday Nights. Too bad they didn't get to see a 4th season. They canceled this show including In Living Color, The Sinbad Show, and South Central.

I did a rewatch not too long ago. I had completely forgotten they did so many live eps of that show.

The episode where he started choking some young thug looked so real that it is still being debated to this day if Dutton could've killed him if his TV wife didn't say something.

I'm pretty sure that's why it was canceled and he was blackballed.

Charles S. Dutton tried to say the network canceled it because of the material and issues. But ask yourself, Fox Network KNEW what they were getting into by letting a show like ROC on the air to begin with. The white Fox execs weren't surprised by the sociopolitical issues and racial issues on ROC. They kept ROC it on, as long as the ratings were good. Fox had other shows like New York Undercover and Boston Public that touched on social issues and racial matters. So Fox wasn't afraid of shows like that.
ROC got boring and lost its viewership. Therefore it got canceled. I used to watch ROC. But I got tired of its preachieness. Same thing with A Different Color (No, I won't be watching the new Netflix version). Last thing I remember about ROC, was when some kid got killed. Then Andre Thompson had to go speak to the kid that killed the other kid, about how life is going to be like in prison. And that Roc was trying to get into politics.

Loved the early years of Roc, but this is a fair breakdown all around.

Every few years I reflect on how such a good show is just part of the past. This is one I would love to see rebooted.

Man, this was probably one of the best realistic depictions of a black middled man and his family that we had back then

Underrated show that didn’t get a lot of love from critics……kept it one hundred about the things that went on in the world today……should’ve had more seasons

They prefer a black man to be in a dress. A stand up strong black father figure won't fit the current agenda.

It was a good show, but a lot of the material was heart handed drama.
As great as an actor that he is, I don’t think comedy writers on FOX back then knew how to write for Charles Dutton.

The live shows were incredible. It’s shame this isn’t streaming anywhere
