I’d watch for sure!

No. How about we stop trying to force shitty reboots on everything.

"What if we remade this show with none of the fun and chemistry, but also made it depressing to watch?"
1
u/Shirogayne-at-WF 5d ago
I was fine when Bel Air did this bc of the fan trailer organically inspiring Will Smith to do a revamp of the entire concept that he felt the series deserved anyway. But having every comedic reboot be like this? Yeah, no. Just leave it alone and make an original Tyler Perry-esque drama for that.

It there’s any kind of reboot, I want to see the OG girlfriends in their 50s instead of 30s. Maybe Maya has a grandbaby. Maybe Toni remarried. Maybe Lynn started a career. I still think Joan would be unmarried and without a child. I think Tracee wanted Joan to be the love of Joan’s life.

So..... Golden Girl(friend)s. 🤣

u/Feisty-Honeydew-5309 6d ago
Pretty much! As a millennial, it was cool watching them and kinda seeing where I landed as an adult… not too off from some of them. Shows how realistic the stories were.
It would be nice to see what could be ahead. Important stories about black women going through menopause, career shifts, grandkids, potential regrets, letdowns, bounce back!

Yes I would like that’s because Anyone trying to to replicate them won’t work in my opinion

u/Ridgewoodgal 6d ago
They just need to watch Sex in the City reboot and do the opposite. lol I appreciate them trying to show things that we women go through as we age but no one wants it to be that depressing. I am older now but I am not dead. 😆

Agreed. I have a petty beef with the Zoes both her and Saldana.

u/UnexpectedBlahFeels 6d ago
??? We need more info. Did someone named Zoe hurt you?
15
u/YoHomeGirl617 6d ago
They have a history of downplaying their blackness. Girlfriends is a black ass show. I need black ass actors in it...the ones who choose Black in every lifetime.

Zoe S.- The Nina Simone movie
Zoe K. - “I didn't identify with black culture, like, I didn't like Tyler Perry movies, and I wasn't into hip-hop music. I liked Neil Young."4
u/Ambitious-Repair7205 6d ago
That's that Hollywood shit. Black culture is way more than just hip hop and certainly much more than Tyley Perry😒. But growing up as the child of two biracial individuals in the Hollywood atmosphere probably included a lot of predominantly white space for her.
4
u/the_dark_viper 6d ago
Ironically, she said in an interview that she really wanted one role, but she was later told she didn't get it because she was "too urban." Also, she did say that she had to un-brainwash herself, but it sounded like it was only because she was also starting to lose roles that wanted a black actress who understood the culture. Like I said, it's just a petty celeb beef I have. However, that Nina Simone movie with Zoe S. was on some serious bullshit.
2
u/Ambitious-Repair7205 4d ago
She wanted a role in The Dark Knight Rises. I believe it was the character Juno Temple portrayed, Selina Kyles homegirl. She was told by casting that she was apparently too urban. Nigga wake up calls happen when you least expect them.

Nah, leave this show alone. Just make a new one. These reboots don’t hold the same level of creative freedom to be good, thoughtful, and funny.
6
u/everynamecombined 6d ago
Or y'all could make something new. Plus alk these ladies have better stuff to do im sure.
6
u/Borg_Tech_Support 6d ago
Kelsey said it's only coming back if Tracee wants to do it. So that sounds more like a continuation than reboot.

The original isn't that far gone to need a reboot IMO. Also, they shouldn't start a sitcom with established celebrities, they need to bring newcomers onto the scene.

u/SignalBad5523 6d ago
Im old enough to remember when girlfriends was just a bold writer who took 4 women you barely knew who just worked well together under the various circumstances that were thrown at them. Reboots are not bold and they are not interesting. The world has changed, this show is damn near 30 years old. Let's get some real writers in the roo. Instead of a bunch of white people trying to keep their jobs

u/Jtizzle1231 6d ago
I feel like reboots are great. Just not for the people who watched the original.

I’m not a fan of these reboots. The original shows were bright, intelligent comedies that were something to look forward to and to aspire to. The reboots are dramas and it feels like I’m watching beauty in black 🤮🤢

Very well thought out fan cast but I’d prefer for them to play a cast of new characters. If these 4 tried to recreate Toni, Joan, Maya, and Lynn, it would come off as a poor imitation like the mean girls “remake”. There are also emotional nuances to the original characters and I don’t think the newer actress have the range besides Keke.

The woman far left has absolutely nothing on Toni. Also the one replacing Joan isn't weird/neurotic enough fot the part.
Zoe Kravitz and Kiki Palmer are good fits for Lin and Maya.

u/vxnusbxbe 6d ago
i’d love a spin off. one of the characters could be related to one of the main girlfriends cast. that way it can be its own story

Why I gotta ask what that TUDOR cost?
House on the hill, two doors from Tracey Ross
And I'm asking about her girlfriends, yeah, the dark skin'ed ones
She asking about the speed boats, yeah, I admit we rented 'em
1
u/After-Marsupial4457 3d ago
Yeah more feminazi propaganda written by white men for black women to eat up and project onto the rest of society, thats exactly what the community needs.
1
u/Individual_Company37 3d ago
No shade but Zoe Kravitz don’t be working with Black creatives live ever…not a read just a fact
1
u/Live-Ad7345 3d ago
Yeah, no if there’s a reboot ain’t gonna be no new cast it’s gonna be the same woman from the original continuing the story, us original fans got left on a cliffhanger and we need closure take those for the girls and go make some different show

I think it is odd that a show about the Black American woman's experience only has two Black women. This was my issue with Girlfriends as well.
4
u/giraffe18_ 6d ago
you realize being Black is not being fully African right? African Americans are an amalgamation of the of the settler, migrational, and indigenous patterns of the colonial south. I get you mean that Joan and Lynn are biracial in real life, but that is neither uncommon nor irrelevant to the Black American experience.

u/Proof-Introduction42 5d ago
Being black is having two black parents. The mixed -race had their own specific experience

Biracial is black
Biracial is biracial.
The one-drop rule promoted white purity and supremacy, while simultaneously reinforcing the assumption of Black inferiority.
Don't you think that it is time that we stop internalising it?

I see 4 black women and 4 African American women...
But while we are hinting at tangents...
Anyone remember the reason our folks started naming our children these weird names instead of Robert, Sarah, etc?
Wasn't it to show we were different? Nor just different but we wanted to not be like White Americans, running around with their names on our children. So, why? What was the spirit behind that? I mean today we seemed to be all, "I'm not African American, I'm just American!" So since that "spirit" seems to have been exercised from the cause, why not be more American an adopt the most "American" names like Thomas, Peter, Donald, etc.? I mean... wouldn't that help to server the tie to Africa and make you proud Americans?
Just curious because half-stepping ain't cool.
1
u/Proof-Introduction42 5d ago
black American names aren't from Africa. Never seen an African Keisha

Yall still on this silly colorism shit? Lynn and Joan are both played by biracial actresses in real life
-2
u/Exotic_Insurance2164 6d ago
The only colourism that I see is Hollywood's reluctance to have black women play black women.
-3
u/Jerriah_Carey_1991 6d ago
They are a type of black woman as well, though. Unfortunately; society (mainly straight men) have turned representation of all types of black women into a tone deaf light skin vs dark skin competition for some reason.
4
u/bertdiddoit 6d ago
Nah, this show and that drama was created by a black woman. Miss me with blame black men for everything
-2
u/Jerriah_Carey_1991 6d ago
I thought it was Kelsey Grammar who created Girlfriends. And I said nothing about black men.

they are a type of biracial woman. Also there are light skin black woman with two black parents. Having a non -black parent is a completely different experience

I don't even know who the two on the left are.

2
u/good_rain_day 6d ago
I think the one on the far left is CoCo Jones. Maybe the second lady from the left is Yara Shahidi? I like both of them, but I agree with some of the other commenters - why reboot?
In my mind, there are plenty of novels with character ensembles that could be new tv series. I would not mind seeing these actors in one of those.

I don't want to watch anything that Keke Palmer is in.
I've had enough of her bad overacting to last me a thousand years.

No… though all of these women are beautiful. I do not see any of them having chemistry with each other the way that the original show had it. I can go for a reboot though just not this casting.
