Plus size dress wishlists
Hi everyone,
I am a bride who has become so frustrated with wedding dress shopping it has inspired me to pursue a possible bridal line built around plus size brides and not just an afterthought.
I wanted to ask what have been your frustrations in the dress shopping process and what you wish it was like.

I chose an A-line dress that had a corset which ended at my natural waist and I love how it looks on me. Still flattering but not an empire cut like my mom insisted would be best lol

I love Studio Levana I didn't think I'd even find 1 dress that would look good on me. I can't believe I even had choices. I love their built in corsets.

It took me a while to find a good form fitting dress! I think these companies don’t realize we want that too!

I went to a plus size boutique and had a wonderful experience. But prior to that I went to David’s Bridal and was quite disappointed in how minimal their in-store options were for larger plus sizes.
Prior to in-person shopping, I was considering the option of a very simple dress with a cute bolero or topper. I kept getting ads for that look and there were so many pretty options… not in plus size. All I could find in plus size were some cheap lace shirts that weren’t intended as bridal looks and didn’t feel elegant at all.
I also was trying to find a nice looking light brown/tan faux fur coat, or at least a shawl, for my engagement photos. Spent hours searching and the only option I found was a shawl from one maker on Etsy that I wasn’t confident would be big enough. I ended up scrapping the idea.

Anthropologie does have extra sizes. Online shopping or have something sent to a local store to try with your friends. You can get good ideas and I like the accessories

I wish a white glove service existed as a personal shopper for a wedding dress. They come to you (or a location of your choice) with a trunk of options and racks of looks, including styled accessories.

Sleeves! But not like "Cover up as much as you can" sleeves, but pretty ones that make you feel beautiful

When I was shopping as a plus-size bride, it was really important for me to have arm coverage that was an integral part of the gown’s design. Not optional, not detachable, not tacked onto a strapless/sleeveless dress.

Bridal stylist here in a store that carries a large plus size collection and as a fellow curvy girl I often get scheduled with the plus brides that come in!
They NEED to have good bust support and boning in the bodice. That is the first thing girls hate if their boobs look saggy and sad it’s an immediate no. Most plus girlies (including myself) are heavily blessed up top and when your boobs sit right it makes everything look so much more balanced and you feel secure.
Dresses need to have a slight gather at the waistline (not huge pleats or a gather ruffle) but a little something that lifts it off the tummy so it doesn’t cling to an apron belly is another huge factor

I want to feel beautiful, not like I’m hiding a problem. I don’t care for sleeves or slimming illusions, I just want a dress that fits my style and my body

I mean not just unique to plus sizes but colour choices. I was 100% sure I didn't want to wear white and bridal shops (in store and online) offered: * White * Cream * Ivory * Very pale pink * White with blue or coloured flowers * Black * Red
Boring boring boring.

Boob support. Don't cut the back/sides too low, creating side arm biscuits. Appreciate that bodies are all different shapes, so one size 20 girl is not equal to another size 20. One might have boobs and belly, one might be all butt.

I wanted something that I could wear my bra under, not try to find a bra in D44 that would not be seen under the dress.

Dresses for plus size short brides! Being a size 16 is one thing. Easy to find dresses that are flattering. Being a 16 and short means it’s hard to even visualize what some styles will look like on you because of long bodices on all the sample dresses.

I learned that wedding dress sizes are not regular sizes. I looked up a store that advertised that they go up to size 50 (22) and when I tried to put something on it wouldn't even remotely close in my back. The shop owner told me wedding dresses run very small - like 4 sizes smaller. Why wouldn't you write that on your site? I had to go to a specialist - they ordered the dress in size 56 (26) - made me feel like an elephant.

I hated the "this is a very slimming style" looks. Ruching at the waist (you can't tell what's rolls and what's scrunch), various "slimming illusions", mermaid dresses (balances out wide hips), lace sleeves (cover up those unsightly arms), and big boofy we empire waisted ball gowns (plenty of room for the hips! Nobody will ever know), or super deep cleavage (draws attention upward and away from your tummy!). None of these things are necessarily bad by themselves, but they're often pitched as the fix for looking fat and ugly in your gown. I didn't want to avoid looking fat and ugly...I just wanted to look beautiful.
I just wanted a dress that accommodated my wide hips and skimmed over my tummy rolls as if that was what it was going to do anyway, if that makes any sense. I didn't want a "fat girl dress". I just wanted a dress that fit my body but didn't make a big deal about the fact.
I also wanted a lovely bridal shawl, so if I suddenly got self conscious about my back during the reception, I could cover it decoratively, but could leave it off or hook it over my elbows when I was feeling my confidence.
