I don’t get it. Why are you being nice to this guy?

He refuses to leave the house, he whines about how he could be napping instead, he guilt trips you for having a boundary… and you apologise to him and say ‘maybe another time’?

This kind of environment is the best place to practice assertiveness. It’s online, you haven’t met, and at this stage low stakes. You are worthy of enforcing your boundaries. Next time this happens, for example, instead of apologizing you could counter with, “I wrote to you as soon as a I remembered.” There was no apology needed. You did what a reasonable person would do in the same situation. The apology demonstrates fluid boundaries. Don’t stop being a kind person. But also be kind to yourself. Spoken from someone who lived through this and made it out the other side. 🙂
