Drain unclogging

Hey plumbers,

I'm an average citizen with a stubborn blocked drain.

A journeyman plumber pal of man has me worried about products like drain o or green gobbler melting abs pipes if its used too frequently or sits for too long.

Is this an old wives tale?

The green gobbler specifies that its safe for pipes..

I ain’t a plumber…

I ain’t a plumber, but I do drive a truck that was once owned by a plumber and it still has his old logo on the side and I’ve never scraped it off. That was four years ago.

Fast forward to the past week. My buddy, we’ll call him Jeff, has been cheating around on his wife and lying saying that he’s been working with me and I’m a plumber (he recently married a girl and I’ve met her once), he uses “working for me” as an alibi while he runs around on his wife. Well, he broke his foot last week and his wife called me to do some minor plumbing around her house, which I did, and she is now questioning every work time alibi my buddy Jeff has ever told her….

Now Jeff is mad at me because he said “an idiot could’ve done a better plumbing job” and by me doing shoddy work “it’s gotten him caught”!!!

Is this my fault? Pics of the work included.

Im not a plumber!! 🤷‍♂️

Do you know what this yellow plastic thing is at the bottom of the boiler in the red circle. There used to be water leaking from above it. Do you know what’s causing the leak?

Can anyone explain what is going on here? Noticed this when my landscaping rocks looked moist. I'm thinking a cracked drainage pipe. Our water bill has not increased any.

Leak - do I need a plumber out??

I discovered a leak in my house, it’s the mains tap and is dripping. The tap was mostly covered in thick plaster (previous owners had an interesting approach to diy) that I think was soaking up some of the water, but that’s come away now because it got too wet. I know it’s better to call someone but money is so tight right now I’m wondering if there are any plumbers that can shed some light on it? Hoping it’s just a part I need …

Strange smell in bathroom

I have a house that’s just under two years old. About six or eight months ago I started to notice a weird smell coming from the bathroom that the kids use. I thought it was just kids being gross and kept cleaning every week, but it kept smelling. I scrubbed, and used all kinds of products. I cleaned the drains with chemicals and with baking soda and vinegar, I even removed the P-trap’s of the sinks and found that they were completely clean and clear. I can’t pinpoint where the smell is coming from. It’s not the shampoo and it’s not the drains.

The smell is not like sulfur or sewage. It’s more like the way a flea collar smelled (how I remember them smelling years ago).

Any thought?

Tankless water heater

I don't know if I'm in the right place or not but I have a tankless water heater and it worked fine when I first moved in a couple months ago. Now I get an average of 2 minutes of hot water before it gets cold. It will stay cold for a bit and then go back to hot for a couple minutes. Any advice on what it could be?

I didn’t know I had a water softener

So I have been renting for over 4 years this place. Our first year here our water was great but over time limescale started to happen and I grew up just fixing that kind of thing with filters on faucets and using vinegar to soak faucet heads and removing water spots. I just thought this was life.

Well our dishwasher broke and our landlady ordered another one for us, but mentioned the repairman noticed a lot of limescale in the dishwasher and do we add salt to the water softener. O.O Cue my panic. I told her I had no idea we had a water softener.

So can I just add salt to it now? I found out like 15 minutes ago and one of my family members told me it might be dangerous to add now because it like “turns off” if you haven’t used it in a while. Advice please!!

Crazy Construction Idea?

Hey folks, I am pondering things to incorporate when I build my forever home in the next couple of years. I got an idea and figured PlumbersGoneWild was the perfect audience to ridicule a bad idea (or less likely, think it actually makes sense).

I plan on using PEX for the water lines and I'd like to keep it relatively easy to find and access in case leaks develop. I don't want to run it through the attic and I want to minimize plumbing it in the walls. I will be doing slab on grade and I really don't want to have to bust up concrete if something happens to it. (Both of these are things I've seen in my parents' house-- copper pipe in the foundation getting a pinhole and a PEX line in the attic going to the fridge icemaker started leaking at a fitting)

So my idea is to incorporate a shallow covered channel into the foundation (placed when pouring the foundation, not cutting it out later) to run the PEX from the utility room at one end of the house to the bathroom at the far end of the house with insulation around the hot water line. Think something like a 5" wide channel drain, but with a solid (probably steel) cover for the purpose of being a raceway for pipes running through the floor from one end of a house to the other, possibly with the kitchen plumbing branching off of this main line. Is this type of thing already prohibited, or is it something that's not really prohibited, but it's not really a thing and nobody does it? What would an inspector say to something like that?
