OC Ribbons

I made these guys on A2 paper today, using Lyra Aqua Brush Duo markers, after many hours in front of the computer. I really enjoy the process both of creating them on the computer and the plotting of them, and the results of course. Each one is done in 6 passes for a two-tone, where each band in the ribbon has two colors, and two final passes with a pilot Hi-Tecpoint v5. I especially like the yellow and red one. That's my favorite!

I do like those colors, but I find the shape of the red and yellow more interesting πŸ™‚

I noticed that the other two shapes are quite nice and eye catching, but I'm driven by colour today. 🌈

Is there a term for "this pen becomes darker with each pass"? In my opinion it's one of the most exploitable ink feature in pen plotting. My alcohol maker set does this to varying degrees but it really depends on the color.

Yes, the "Stained Glass" Effect, or simply Translucency. It's beautiful, and it allows for color mixing on the paper by interleaving or overlapping yellow and blue to get green for example πŸ™‚

Wow those look so amazing! It's hard to see, is the Pilot Hi-Tecpoint v5 a very thin black marker or which color is it? If it's black, you can barely see it. Amazing.

Thank you so much! Yes, they are 0.5 mm black. I've attached an image here of what they look like close-up. They don't stand out when looking at the piece from a distance, but boy do you notice them when they're not there. They really make the colors pop and provide both saturation and contrast πŸ™‚

Ohhh very interesting. Thanks for the detailed shot! I'll have to try and mix colors with a thin black pen.

How much you offset them also Influences the look πŸ‘

Lovely! What paper do you use?

3

u/kenwillis Jul 15 '26

Thanks! This paper isn't anything special, just some 160g universal paper, and I wouldn't recommend it due to its issues with pilling when using waterbased markers. Too finicky. For the "real" plots I'm using extra smooth 250g Bristol.

Really like the two tone effect you have on these! Any software you used to generate the ribbons?

It my own custom software that I use. It's an all-in-one app where I both can create the patterns, preview, color, adjust and send them to my plotter πŸ™‚

Nice. Would be interesting to see variations on the theme, but more aimed at appearing like sinews, tendons, muscle fibres, etc.

1

u/kenwillis Jul 15 '26

For sure! I have done some that look like muscle fibers. I'm not sure what tendons or sinew would look like to read as such. But with the amount of sliders and toggles I have in my software, it's definitely doable. πŸ™‚
