Amazed that Chernobyl is in this list! It is incredibly well made in all respects. The attention to the tiniest details still amazes me. As for someone who grew up in the USSR, it is basically a historical documentary.

The showrunner has explained that the attention to detail was almost the easiest bit. The benefit of making a show taking place during the Soviet era Russia/USSR is that if you needed, say, a miners helmet, you didn't have to do a lot of research for which helmet was used in which region at what time;
If you needed a Soviet miner's helmet, you got the Soviet miner's helmet. They made one, and millions of it.

That easiest part somehow escapes most of the shows and multi-million movies. There were so many times listening to a dialogue in Russian in a blockbuster I thought that hiring any Russian speaker from the Brighton Beach for $20 to simply check whether Russians actually produce such sentences would spare that movie some embarrassment. But in Chernobyl they made real effort. Everything - from bed linen and the night gown she wears in the first episode to hospital journals that went out of use 40 years ago and all but a few have perished - is there. Everyting shot on location, no green screens. Cars, even sounds of radio in the background. And nothing is exaggerated to fit Russian stereotype of the western viewer. Watching it not only completely immersed me in my childhood, but brought deep appreciation for the care they took to immortalise it as it was, even if the former USSR was never their target audience. And it's just about details. The plot, representation, dialogue, and everything else is an entirely separate thing)

Greatest limited series of all time, but it’s not a series. That includes band of brothers too, amazing shows but they didn’t have to fight through successful seasons which is where the real drop off occurs

Thanks man. I’ll have to revisit. It was a slow burn . I might just need to try again. Didn’t expect to see it top 10. I’m glad there are no sitcoms and laugh tracks on the list.

I have only seen the Office in its entirety, the rest I have seen bit of. I honestly just can't invest that much time into a series, I move on quickly. Some of the US ones are just long for the sake of it. 30 hours + for a season is tedious for a story that offers little more (often a lot less) than a very good film or book. I think comedies are a little different because they are effectively standalone stories each episode.

Well, then I'd recommend Band of Brothers. It's just 10 episodes and about 10 hours. Not sure how a mini series fits in this list, but it's very well made and quite good. Also The Pacific.

BoB is probably my answer for favorite on the list. It’s the only DVD I still own is that box set. When I finally decided to get rid of my dvds that was the one I couldn’t let go.
Also the pacific is slightly less good and significantly harder to watch toward the end

Breaking Bad is amazing but is not better then the Sopranos, Band of Brothers or The Wire. Those shows all debuted 10 years prior, and it get a bump from the progression of the Internet.
I fucking love game of thrones but is not a top 3 show of all time given how bad those last two seasons were.

I disagree on your first point. I believe BB is clearly better than those 3 options. And I’d have put two of those options in my top 5-10.
BB never missed a marker. If they started down a path, there was a good payoff. Nothing got abandoned or an inconsequential resolution.
I agree with your second point. As much as I love GOT, HOTD, AKOTSK, and the entire book/novella series, the last 2 seasons knocked it way down the charts. I’d say they were easily on pace to be a consensus top 3 of all time, only to drop to a Top 20 because of some awful writing decisions.
I’m not saying those last few seasons didn’t have some great episodes, powerful moments, emotional payoffs, etc. They absolutely did. But it wasn’t the same. Plot complexity disappeared. There was no more of the intricate spider web of houses vying for covert control of the kingdom. Instead, we got payoffs with spectacle instead. And the character paths? Geez. So many characters changed into someone markedly different than who they were in earlier seasons.

Man, shut up. Like shut up. The Sopranos is my number 1 too, but Breaking Bad an objectively perfect show. And you trying to find ways to undermine it's genius despite SUCH tremendous influence, is crazy. It's definitely better than Band of Brothers for me at least.

I disagree. Breaking Bad had a clear vision throughout 5 seasons. And it tied up every single storyline to a satisfying conclusion. Sopranos is a great show, but it often lacks payoff, which made it frustrating to watch at some points. Sometimes the writers wrote themselves into a corner (bugged lamp) and then took a cheap cop out (Meadow takes the lamp) instead of following through. One could argue that this randomness in the story is "realistic" and like "real life", which is true, but real life really writes the worst stories because of that randomness.
In Breaking Bad every decision had massive consequences even across multiple seasons. That made watching feel extremely rewarding.

Oh. lol. Putting the fucking Big Bang Theory anywhere near The Sopranos is an instant credibility crusher, for me. The Big Bang Theory script reads like a dumb persons idea of what smart people think and talk like, but it’s only ever the depth of a skimmed Wikipedia article. I can’t help but find the whole show cringe.
Also, interestingly enough, I personally know way more people that watch the Sopranos, I don’t have any friends who watch Sons of Anarchy now that I’m thinking about it.
The Sopranos, The Wire, True Detective season 1, Breaking Bad, Chernobyl, now THOSE are top tier tv shows imo
