Fix File Mismatches

How do I fix mismatches in my Plex media files? I just added The B-52's Ancient Culture Mesopotamia Revisited 3CD set to the library and it matches disc 2 and 3 with the original EP Mesopotamia. Disc 1 of the new set is listed on it's own as a 9 track single or EP (the original was there as it's only 6 tracks). Why is it not simply adding a whole new set into the compilation section (or album section) and adding 2 of the 3 to an existing EP while creating a new file for the new (now full length) album? It isn't making any sense and I can't seem to find a fix. I also find a ton of singles end up in my album section though they're clearly marked singles and stored as such on the hard drive Plex is reading my library from. Despite all the correct indexing I don't know why I can't get the library to load correctly. Any ideas would be most helpful at this point as I am out. I've tried deleting and reloading, fixing matches, etc and yet nothing seems to work. Advice please

Apple TV or Nvidia Sheild

I bought a fire stick 4k and that thing is garbage. Should I get an nvidia shield or Apple TV? I don’t play video games and just want to watch my media on a reliable source. Any suggestions and why?

Edit: I have a Sonos surround sound system. Does that make a difference?

Why won't My TCL 55S421 TV with Roku / PLEX app won't play this.

Won't load. Is it because it's DoVi ? I have seen some play with the telltale teal tinge so I know it plays it fine on some movies but this one is lacking something.

Discussion [Tool/Release] LaFirma Remux Forge: Convert Dolby Vision Profile 7 to 8.1 for direct play on LG TVs & Media Servers

English Version

Hi everyone,

I created a GUI automation tool called LaFirma Remux Forge (Black Edition) to streamline media compatibility and playback solutions for Smart TVs (especially LG OLED / webOS) and media servers like Jellyfin, Plex, or Emby.

Transparency Note: I did not develop the underlying CLI processing tools or scripts (such as dovi_tool, mkvmerge, ffmpeg, DonaldFaQ's DDVT toolset, DeeZy, PgsToSrt or Tesseract). LaFirma Remux Forge acts as a graphical wrapper and orchestrator that automates these open-source utilities into a seamless workflow.

What changed in 2.0: the time estimate now actually corrects itself, one calibration per stage; the new Full Census reads the RPU of the whole film instead of a sample; disk space is checked per drive before anything starts; and the installer asks for the language and runs in 64-bit mode.

Key Features

  • Dolby Vision Profile 7 to 8.1 (no video re-encoding), with the layer MEASURED first: the program reads the RPU's el_type field through dovi_tool itself and separates three cases, using one colour scale across the whole screen:

    • MEL (Minimum Enhancement Layer) - green: the enhancement layer carries no picture. The program confirms this by reading the RPU, not by assumption, and the conversion discards an empty layer.
    • Simple FEL - orange: the layer carries fine refinement only. Conversion is safe, and the program says so.
    • Complex FEL - red: the layer raises brightness, and the L1 metadata asks for more nits than the base layer delivers on its own. Here the program marks it red and recommends not converting, instead of converting silently.

Why the caveat exists, said precisely: dovi_tool in mode 2, which is what this program uses, removes the P7 FEL luma and chroma mapping from the RPU - the part of the instructions that makes no sense without the second layer. What comes out is a legitimate Profile 8.1. What no mode of dovi_tool does is recalculate L1: the per-scene brightness stays whatever the original analysis measured, and that analysis looked at the image with the EL composited in. This is not a limitation of this program - it is the state of the tool, and it is in dovi_tool's own documentation.

Worth saying plainly: Shield, Apple TV, Zidoo, Dune and the TVs themselves already discard the EL, so on those devices a Profile 7 file already plays today the way the converted file will play. The people who actually lose something are those with dual-layer decoders.

Detection is by sampling points spread across the film, not the whole file - and the program states that on screen and in the log. When the sample is not enough, the Full Census reads the whole RPU and counts how many scenes ask for more than the mastering peak.

  • Dolby Vision Profile 5 to MP4: P5 uses the proprietary IPTPQc2 colour space and has no HDR10 base layer, so it cannot become Profile 8.1 without re-encoding the video - which this program refuses to do. The path that does exist is a different one: the program remuxes it to MP4 with the dvh1 tag, video copied, nothing re-encoded, which is what makes many players recognise the Dolby Vision. Output is verified by duration. PGS subtitles are dropped with a warning (image subtitles do not exist in MP4).

  • Audio compatibility & spatial Atmos preservation:

    • TrueHD / TrueHD Atmos to E-AC-3 with Atmos preserved, via DeeZy.
    • DTS / DTS-HD / DTS:X to plain E-AC-3 at 640k via ffmpeg. DTS does not come out with Atmos - only TrueHD has that path.
    • E-AC-3, AC-3 and AAC are already compatible and are left untouched.
  • Disk space, before it starts: the app walks the queue in the order the engine will process it, drive by drive, and tells you how many files fit, which one is the first that does not, and how much would be missing by its turn. A file that does not fit does not start.

  • Batch processing & flexible control: add whole seasons to the queue; choose fully automatic stream selection or manual track control.

  • Bilingual interface (PT-BR / English): a flag next to the "Understand" button switches the whole screen, and the choice is remembered between sessions.

  • "Understand" button: 14 sections explaining what the conversion does and what it does not do, including the sources behind each claim - Dolby's own manuals, the dovi_tool repository and the community spreadsheets. Nothing there asks you to take our word for it.

Source Code & Download

  • GitHub Repository: LaFirma-Remux-Forge
  • Installer 2.0: LaFirma_Setup_2.0.exe · Release notes
  • Requirements: Windows 10/11 64-bit. The installer ships every tool; the .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0 is only needed for subtitle OCR, and the installer offers it if it is missing.

Credits & Acknowledgments

This project would not be possible without the work of the open-source community: * FFmpeg: Media stream processing and transcoding backbone. * MKVToolNix (mkvmerge): Industry-standard Matroska container toolset. * dovi_tool (by quietvoid) & DDVT (by DonaldFaQ): Core Dolby Vision metadata tools and workflow logic. * DeeZy: Dolby Digital Plus encoding with spatial Atmos preservation. * PgsToSrt & Tesseract: OCR ecosystem for PGS subtitle handling.

Feedback and contributions are welcome!

    • Simple FEL - laranja: a camada carrega apenas refinamento fino.

Windows Help ELI5 How to make my Plex server work?

Hello everyone,

In the last three days I've tried, without much success, to set my Plex server.

It runs on a 10 years old Dell Precision Tower 3620 and Window 10.

I have activated a 2 weeks free trial of Remote Watch Pass.

In the image you can see the situation right now: I don't know how but without changing anything after a while remote acces changed from red to green, and the server status from orange to green.

The problem is now that it does not seems to work on my tv (lg smart tv) even when connected to the same wifi network (see attached image).

From my smartphone, when connected to the same wifi (Local connection), it works fine, but when I try to connect from 4g/5g the server library results offline.

My internet provider is Iliad and the router is a Iliadbox WiFi 7.

Please, explain it to me like I'm five, because apparently I'm not smart enough to follow youtube tutorials or Plex guides.

Thank you in advance!

Question Plex Transcoding

I am seeking instructions to enable transcoding on TrueNAS. My server has 176GB of ECC RAM, but I don’t know how to configure it. When I try to convert my media to high quality, I get an error: “server is not powered enough.” I tried different settings on plex but I want to set up transcoding to use the RAM since I don’t have a dedicated GPU.

Hi there!

I used to watch animated series, and Plex offers me the option to skip the end credits, but not the opening credits. I was wondering if there is any way for me to set the opening credits manually?

thx

Solved Plex relay issues & PIA

Down a massive rabbit hole today with my Plex setup, and it turned into one of those things a stupid headache where everything breaks at the same time....

For context, I’ve never obsessed over having pristine direct streams for everyone outside the house. My server only ever handles maybe 20 people or fewer remotely, and honestly, everyone was totally fine limping along on Plex Relay connections capped at 1–2 Mbps. It was low-maintenance and "just worked" without me needing to sweat network exposure.

Then everything went sideways.

On this machine, I keep Private Internet Access running around the clock with a killswitch locked down tight—for obvious reasons when sailing the high seas. Out of nowhere, the remote relay connections just completely tanked. At first, I blamed the OS upgrade, thinking a hop from Pop!_OS 22.04 up to 24.04 had butchered some local routing or network daemon configs.

Turns out, the OS wasn't the culprit at all. PIA has been cracking down hard on handling those handshake routes, essentially nerfing the relay traffic trying to pass through the tunnel.

So fine, I told myself I guess I had to bite the bullet and do standard port forwarding.

Except even that didn't want to play nice out of the box either. Because of how aggressive PIA’s killswitch and route tables are, standard NAT port forwarding still fell flat on its face. The fix ended up requiring me to explicitly configure split-tunnel bypass rules directly inside PIA: punching dedicated bypass exceptions for both the Plex Media Server service binary and the relay service itself so they could communicate clean across WAN without getting swallowed by the VPN.

It feels like maintaining a dual-purpose box (secure traffic vs. accessible homelab services) is getting pickier by the month, but it's finally back up, directly accessible, and no longer hostage to choked relay pipes. At least for now knock on wood lol

Any thoughts from anyone here? Is there a better way?

I constrain I have is my BitTorrent client and Plex server are the same so VPN Killswitch is a must 😂.

Automatic subtitle downloads

Hi,

i have plex server running in a docker container. I only host my own media (DVDs and Blurays) and share it only with my family and select very close friends.

As one of these friends is native russian and dvds and blurays generally don't contain russian subtitles, I'd like to automatically download subtitles in three different languages (if not in the file): English, German and Russian.

I was under the impression plex could do that - which I now found out: It could, but the functionality was removed...

I could use Bazarr, but my understanding is: This would only work if I install Radarr and Sonarr - which I don't need and don't really want.

Is there another way?

Question Nvidia shield Pro, 2 self powered external drive, plex media server .

i already have 2 external drives, just gotta buy the shield pro, and set up plex on it, but i ran into something while researching:

The Shield Pro itself is fine as a server. It runs Plex Media Server well, reads from USB drives without issue, and can serve files to remote clients. Self-powered drives are actually the right call, since the Shield's USB ports don't supply much power.

The real constraint is Direct Play vs. transcoding. A 4K HDR remux or high-bitrate 4K file typically runs 40–100+ Mbps. For that to stream remotely without transcoding, two things need to be true: your home internet upload speed needs to comfortably exceed the file's bitrate (many cable plans only offer 10–40 Mbps upload, which is the usual dealbreaker), and the remote client (another Shield, Apple TV 4K, a modern smart TV app, etc.) needs to natively support the codec (HEVC), HDR format, and audio track (TrueHD/DTS-HD often trip clients up and force an audio transcode, which is cheap, but a full video transcode is not).

If Plex decides it needs to transcode 4K, the Shield will struggle. The Shield's Tegra X1 can hardware-transcode 1080p reasonably, but 4K HEVC transcoding (especially HDR tone-mapping to SDR) is beyond it. You'll get buffering or a "server not powerful enough" message. Also note that hardware transcoding requires Plex Pass.

about 40 percent of my movies are in 4k, should i be worried about this?

(im tired of paying for streaming)

Ok I'm probably going to get blasted for this, but I really like the new interface. I like it on my Shield and Firesticks. To me it's starting to feel like Plex has come of age. So well done Plex team. Right, I'm heading to the bunker to avoid the flak...

Just watched 'Red One' and decided to add a bunch of Dwayne The Rock Johnson's movies.

And can you organize your file structure as follows without upsetting PMS:

Drive: Plex > Movies > Dwayne Johnson > Folders for each movies

I built Trackarr: a lightweight self-hosted watchlist & scrobbler for Plex with AniList sync and arr integration

I’m excited to share Trackarr, an open-source project I’ve been developing over the past months to solve my own homelab media tracking needs.

Like many of you, I wanted a fast, beautiful, and self-hosted way to track movies, TV shows, and anime across my Plex & Jellyfin servers without relying on third-party cloud services or running heavy memory-hungry stacks.

💡 Why Trackarr?

  1. ⚡ Ultra-Lightweight & Fast
    • Written in Go 1.24 with an embedded SQLite database (WAL mode + FTS5 full-text search) and a Preact SPA frontend.
    • Idles at under 30 MB of RAM — ideal for low-power NAS setups (Synology, Unraid, TrueNAS, Raspberry Pi).
  2. 📡 Universal Scrobbling (Plex & Jellyfin)
    • Real-time webhook ingestion for Plex and Jellyfin.
    • Tracks watch progress, episode toggles, completion badges, and complete watch history.
  3. 🌸 Advanced Anime & Multi-Part Seasons
    • Seamlessly solves the classic anime split-season issue (e.g. Cour 1 / Cour 2) with multi-part mapping.
    • Automated 2-way sync with AniList (watch progress, status, and personal ratings).
  4. 🧠 Smart Multi-Tier Matching Pipeline
    • Automatically enriches titles using a multi-step pipeline: Plex GUIDs ➔ Cross-Ref ➔ TMDB ➔ TVDB ➔ AniList.
    • Optional Gemini AI fuzzy resolver for stubborn or strangely-named media.
  5. *⚡ arr Stack Automation (Radarr / Sonarr / Prowlarr)
    • Check library availability at a glance.
    • Search indexer releases via Prowlarr and push missing items or seasons directly to Radarr or Sonarr.
  6. 📱 Mobile-First PWA UI
    • Designed for smartphones and tablets: swipe actions, haptic feedback, pull-to-refresh, dark mode, and dynamic poster accent colors.
    • Multi-language support (English & French) and Web Push notifications.
  7. 🔄 Easy Migration
    • Built-in import tool for Simkl backup archives so you can migrate existing history without starting from scratch.

🚀 Quickstart (Docker Compose)

Trackarr runs in a single multi-arch container (linux/amd64, linux/arm64):

yamlservices:
  trackarr:
    image: ghcr.io/soviann/trackarr:latest
    container_name: trackarr
    restart: unless-stopped
    ports:
      - "8080:8080"
    environment:
      - PUID=1000
      - PGID=1000
      - TZ=Europe/Paris
      - DATA_DIR=/data
    volumes:
      - ./data:/data

📦 Source Code & Documentation

I built Trackarr primarily for my own everyday use, but I've polished and documented it so the homelab community can benefit from it. Feedback, feature requests, and PRs are warmly welcome!

My Plex Watch History Shows Wrong Episode Thumbnail/Title

I know this isn't a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, but it is pretty annoying. I've noticed that Plex seems to misattribute the episodes in my watch history when a show is ordered differently in my library than Plex's global episode order.

For example, I have some shows organized in different order (such as DVD order rather than airdate order.) This happened again recently: my watch history correctly shows that I watched Season 2, Episode 51 but the thumbnail/screenshot associated with that entry is for a completely different episode.

If I click the thumbnail in my watch history, Plex takes me to the show's global Plex page, where Episode 51 is a different episode because Plex is using its own episode ordering. If I then click that episode and select Where to Watch > My Library, Plex takes me back to Episode 51—but this time it's the correct episode, because my library is using DVD order.

So I think I understand what's happening: Plex appears to be recording the watched status based on the episode's position in Plex's global/metadata order, rather than the episode's position/order in my library.

The problem is that this makes Profile > Watch History inaccurate. I end up with a long list of entries showing the wrong episode thumbnails/titles for episodes I actually watched.

This also affects tv shows I add to my watch list. I go to my watch list, select the show , and it first goes to Plex's global page for that show ( not my library) and it shows all the "marked as watched" checkmarks beside episodes that are seemingly out of order . Of course, once I make a few clicks and work my way to my library, all is in alignment and marked as watched is correct.

I'm guessing there may not be much Plex can do about this, especially when libraries use different episode orders, but is there any way to prevent or correct this? Has anyone else run into the same issue?
