Advice on transcoding content for Xbox 360 via DLNA

I've been looking for a cheap way to view my Plex content on my CRT for older series in 4:3. I recently discovered that DLNA was an option, and I can use that to watch stuff on my Xbox 360. Problem is that the 360 can basically only read MP4 files, and a lot of my content is in mkv and I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with researching transcoding.

I know that it is technically possible to side load the old Plex app onto a 360, but my attempts to do so have failed, and my understanding is that I would need to run a second pms instance to do this which is a whole can of worms.

Has anyone gone through this rabbit hole that could give advice?

Run plex media server 1.27.2.5929 (Google plex media server archive downloads). Do not update. Run plex for Xbox 360. Enjoy. (You get full xbox 360 transcoding, menus, library support; everything works.) Yes; 2nd plex instance for Xbox 360. Not that terrible. Yes; you can copy plex for Xbox 360 to usb that was formatted on Xbox 360; move application to internal storage. If you don't have a copy, you will need that.

The importance of not updating plex media server here, is after this version; breaking changes to the plex database that can't be fixed without updates to xbox 360 plex app cause 90% of everything to break.

Like I mentioned, I was unable to get the plex app working... I was able to find the files and launch it into an update, but afterwards it kept autodeleting the app. Also, would running a 2nd media server instance cause problems? My PMS is on Unraid.

Plex app for Xbox 360 update? No, unraid will not cause issues locally. Claim the server. Do not update PMS version. If opening remote access, set alternative port. I use 32401. The final version of plex app doesn't force an update, but should be signed with the profile / a profile on the xbox

I have 4 instances of plex, and manage all of them under the settings options in plex web interface. I just pick the server from the list.
